Borealopelta (meaning “Northern shield”)
The remains (pictured above) of this dinosaur are so well preserved, that it is deemed closer to being a mummy than a fossil.
It was discovered at an oil sands mine north of Fort McMurray, Alberta, and is so well preserved that it includes not only the armor (osteoderms) in their life positions, but also remains of their keratin sheaths, overlying skin, and stomach contents from the animal’s last meal. Melanosomes were also found that indicate the animal had a reddish skin tone.
This specimen is on display at the Royal Tyrell Museum in Alberta.
