Don’t write off psychiatric complaints!

I had a patient come in via ambulance for “drug withdrawal, per family.” Husband called 911 because she had been acting weird all day, and she has a history of abusing her prescribed opioid medications. The patient admitted that she had also abused them today because of her headache that wouldn’t go away. She was assessed by the physician who came to the nurses station and told me “we’re going to do some basic psych labs on her and then we’re going to send her to rehab.”

I go in the room and she tells me she has to use the restroom, and since I needed a urine sample, this was great news! I help her up and say “okay, the bathroom is on your left” and she proceeds to look to her right. I tell her again, “no, the bathroom is on your left” and she proceeds to keep turning right until she is facing the bathroom, and then says “oh! there it is!”

Hmm… Interesting… I tell her “I’m going to do a quick assessment. keep looking at my nose and tell me how many fingers I am holding up.” As I held 3 fingers up in her left visual field she looked at me confused, looked at the hand sitting by my side, and says “you aren’t holding any fingers up.”

Now we’re rushing: Stroke alert, CT scan, placing an Ultrasound IV line for Angiography, and scrambling to call anyone to find her last known normal time. When it was all said and done, she had a confirmed occipital-temporal stroke. Unfortunately, there was nothing left that could be done because she hadn’t come into the hospital that morning when symptoms began, but instead of being sent to involuntary drug-rehab that day, she was admitted to the hospital.

Remember, psychiatric patients can have medical problems too.

Japan’s complete lack of understanding of declining birth rates in relation to its work culture reminds me a lot of how America has an assumption that millennials are killing industries when the truth is they are more frugal because of a lack of funds.

Both come from a conservative mindset that neglects the impact that a toxic work culture can have on society.

A 80+ hour work week in order to maintain financial stability isn’t exactly a solid ground to date people and eventually build a family from a healthy relationship.

A workforce comprised of 20 somethings that make between 20-40k a year in entry positions isn’t a good ground to build a reliable consumer base when a huge chunk of that is going to rent, utilities, car payments, and student loans.

I am convinced that, in general, people want to have families. Many, if not most, would be happy to raise children. But in order to have children and raise them, especially to do so well, people need happy, stable relationships, financial security and time to devote to - you know - actually raising the child. You need both money and time to do that. If people are not given the time and means to be able to create social connections and strong relationships, to devote to parenthood and family, then they are not going to do it. How can they?

Chadwick was diagnosed with stage III colon cancer in 2016, and battled with it these last 4 years as it progressed to stage IV. 

⁣A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it all, and brought you many of the films you have come to love so much. From Marshall to Da 5 Bloods, August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and several more, all were filmed during and between countless surgeries and chemotherapy. ⁣⁣

It was the honor of his career to bring King T’Challa to life in Black Panther. ⁣He died in his home, with his wife and family by his side. ⁣

The family thanks you for your love and prayers, and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time. ⁣⁣

I hope he knew the impact he had on the lives of countless people around the world. I hope he knew how much he was loved and how many people admired his talent. How many people - little boys, little girls, men, women - looked up to him.

I can’t fight the tears that come stubbornly, I can’t actually believe that that is true but I know I’m finding comfort in knowing that Chadwick Boseman will literally live forever through the legacy he leaves behind, and that he’s already a legend and a symbol of hope and a symbol of power for forever.

Rest In Peace. Rest in Power, King.

Chadwick knew he had a limited amount of time left on this earth so he lived every single day to the fullest. He made five fantastic movies, brought a king to life on our screens, marched in the streets for the rights of so many people, and married the woman he loved. 

Don’t just remember Chadwick for the movies he made. Remember him for the incredible man that he was. Because he lived. He lived.
