BULLETS,  BLADES,  BATS,  AND  BUZZARDS  alike  never  got  the  drop  on  him  quite  like  her.  Sure,  her  all-too-skillful  tendency  to  pop  up  isn't  anything  to  scoff  at,  though  this  is  different.  You'd  think  a  door  appearing  at  the  edge  of  someone's  gaze  would  be  bad,  but  those  people  haven't  seen  Kai  struggle  to  accept  praise.  It's  an  Achilles  heel  —  within  reason.  Sweet  nothings  from  strangers  weren't  any  different  than  sand  on  the  beach  to  him.  Each  as  inviting  as  they  were  abrasive.

This  isn't  that.  No,  no,  it's  far  from  cutting  words  and  sleight  of  hand  to  conceal  the  knife.  Not  being  able  to  read  the  room  didn't  matter  as  much  with  Genki.  His  heart  never  doubts  her,  not  even  once.  It's  why,  whenever  she  talks,  his  insides  twist;  his  psyche  buzzes  with  warnings  and  cautions,  and  sometimes  he  wonders  if  she  could  hear  them  whenever  he  wasn't  prattling  on.  Despite  all  that,  despite  himself,  he  will  never  believe  she  lied  because  that  twist  in  his  gut  isn't  anywhere  near  as  sweet  as  his  tender  moments  with  her.

His  head  jerks  as  he  turns,  nose  raised  in  a  facsimile  of  arrogance.  It's  not  even  close  to  the  real  deal,  not  even  on  a  good  day.  The  soft  twitch  of  nervous  fingers.  The  air  of  restlessness  threatens  to  throw  sparks  at  any  moment  —  not  the  first  time,  FYI.  Nothing  could  be  more  telling  than  the  loose  smile  hanging  off  his  lips  that's  far  too  wide  to  be  cocky.  The  only  thing  going  for  him  is  his  shades,  making  it  a  bit  trickier  to  see  his  eyes  dart  about.  He  talks,  if  only  to  avoid  bursting  into  flames  from  containing  all  that  hot  air  at  once.   

❝  My,  my,  ya  that  smitten  wit'  me?  Hm?  ❞  Pay  no  mind  to  the  way  he  knits  his  fingers  into  hers.  Look  away!  ❝  ...  I'm  happiest  with  you,  too.  ❞  She  sees  him  and  for  once,  that  doesn't  make  him  afraid.

everything  seems  to  be  just  fine  for  a  moment  and  there's  a  way  that  tension  seems  to  leave  shoulders  for  a  split  second.   ❛   oh  thank  goodness,  I'm  happy  to  hear  tha  -   .  .  .   eh?   ❜   his  mind  seems  to  catch  up  with  the  last  part  of  others  words  and  face  burns  as  he  shuffles  so  much  that  he  nearly  topples  over  (  the  grace  of  a  being  a  figure  skater  keeps  him  from  fully  toppling  in  that  moment  ).   ❛   s  -  sorry,  I'm  sorry!   ❜   he's  bowing  as  he  all  but  shouts  apologies.

KEEPING  A  STRAIGHT  FACE  MIGHT  be  the  hardest  part  about  this.  Not  that  it's  much  different  from  his  day-to-day  to  be  a  bit  gruff  and  obtuse.  Call  it  his  tried-and-true  talent,  but  it's  hard  to  resist  the  urge  to  laugh.  Having  someone  stumbling  all  over  themselves  isn't  how  he  usually  gets  his  kicks.  Still,  it's  far  more  entertaining  than  another  meeting  —  anything  but  hurrying  back  to  that  would  suffice.  Machinery  whirs  punctuated  by  a  firm  thunk  as  the  vending  machine  spat  out  the  caffeine  he  needed  to  keep  today  from  becoming  even  more  of  a  slog.  It's  a  start.

❝  Mhm  .  .  .  want  anything?  Wouldn't  recommend  any  caffeine,  though.  Ya  seem  twitchy  enough  as  is.  ❞

𝐀𝐋𝐀𝐒,  𝐇𝐄𝐑  𝐎𝐖𝐍  𝐒𝐔𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐅𝐈𝐂𝐈𝐀𝐋𝐈𝐓𝐘:  it  disturbed  her  prideful  stride  all  too  quickly,  weaving  a  traitorous  note  of  compliance  into  her  solitary  push  forward.  Whether  his  words  were  truly  formulated  with  complimentary  intent  mattered  little  to  someone  so  wholly  devoted  to  the  delusional  whims  of  her  own  self-indulgence;  someone  who  clung  to  every  ounce  of  praise  with  the  persistence  of  a  parasitic  species,  ever  eager  to  bask  in  the  made-up  rays  of  a  spotlight  she  demanded  rather  than  deserved. 

❝   Mmm.   ❞  The  first  indication  of  her  reluctant  appeasement  came  in  the  form  of  a  hum;  a  half-muffled  sound  that  faded  before  it  could  fully  take  shape.  What  followed  was  a  subtle  falter  in  her  steps,  the  sharp  rhythm  of  her  heels  slowing  alongside  her  pace     —     granting  him,  benevolent  as  she  was,  the  privilege  of  catching  up  inch  by  tantalizing  inch. 

Stripped  of  reservations  and  doubts  alike,  her  resolve  bared  its  traitorous  countenance  the  moment  she  slowed  enough  to  meet  his  gaze,  revealing  her  expression  as  one  of  burgeoning  infatuation     —     a  glimpse  of  subdued  warmth  buried  deep  beneath  the  fissure  cracks  of  her  usual  frost. 

❝   I  suppose,   ❞  she  mused,  voice  lilting  through  painted  lips,  ❝   it  wouldn’t  hurt  to  have  you  take  a  look  at  it.   ❞  

A  beat     —     then,  because  she  could  never  allow  him  the  satisfaction  of  an  unchallenged  victory:  ❝   No  sitting,  though.  I  can  stand  just  fine.   ❞

FAR  FROM  A  BLOSSOMING  POET,  yet  a  phrase  came  to  mind  —  something  about  roses  and  thorns.  There's  a  certain  charm  to  the  risk  that  gilds  her  very  soul.  No  doubt,  it  says  more  about  him  than  her.  Too  eager  and  reckless  to  weigh  the  pros  and  cons  of  risk.  For  him,  it's  always  been  the  mundane  that  leaves  that  much  more  to  be  desired.  Besides,  nothing  wrong  with  a  healthy  dose  of  verbal  jousting  to  help  set  the  mood.  What  could  be  more  romantic  than  that?  Don't  ever  think  he  isn't  a  romanitc.

Still,  trading  barbs  with  her  isn't  his  angle  as  much  as  he  enjoys  them.  Making  sure  her  innards  don't  become  'outtards'  —  that's  the  issue,  he  reminds  himself.  Her  all-too-discreet  change  in  gait  gives  him  a  newfound  chance  to  observe  and  understand.  His  worries  might  just  have  been  a  touch  exaggerated  —  but  could  you  blame  him?  She's  the  type  to  grit  her  teeth  with  a  hole  through  her  head  rather  than  make  even  a  peep.  Can't  complain  too  much,  though.  Under  the  right  circumstances,  she  might've  found  a  box  to  hide  in  before  he  got  this  close.

Oh,  loving  her  might  just  be  more  taxing  than  slaying  any  monster  or  beast.

❝  Didn't  doubt  that  for  a  second.  ❞  Surely  the  thought  of  lowering  herself  to  something  as  WEAK  as  sitting  for  a  couple  of  minutes  would've  been  beneath  her.  Surely.  ❝  Guess  you'll  just  be  abusing  my  poor,  frail  legs  instead.  Brutal.  ❞

His  hands  lift,  fingers  about  to  graze  her  cheeks,  yet  taking  pause.  A  preliminary  scan  before  a  smirk.  ❝  Just  so  ya  know,  I  ain't  a  licensed  medical  professional  and  no  refunds,  returns,  or  exchanges.  ❞  It's  a  rather  aloof  way  of  asking:  May  I,  Your  Highness?
