The variegated foliage, pink flowers and compact growth of Weigela 'Florida Variegata' make it a popular addition for a mixed border. This deciduous shrub has clusters of pink, funnel-shaped flowers on arching stems from late spring into early summer and are popular with pollinators, especially bees.

Grus, which is Latin for "crane", is another southern bird added to the skies by Dutch astronomer Petrus Plancius in 1598 based on early Dutch expeditions to the East Indies. It has been named after other birds in the past, including a heron and a flamingo, but the crane stuck.

There are four named stars here:

Alnair (α Gruis), the brightest star in Grus and one of the brightest stars in the night sky. It is a solitary blue-white giant about 101 light years away. Its name comes from the Arabic word al-nayyir meaning "the bright one."

Tiaki (β Gruis) is a solitary red giant star about 177 light years away. Its name comes from the Tuamotuan language, a Polynesian language, meaning "guardian."

Aldhanab (γ Gruis) is a solitary blue-white giant star about 211 light years away. Its name comes from the Arabic word al-dhanab meaning "the tail," when Gruis was once part of Piscis Austrinus.

Itonda (HD 208487) is a Sun-like star about 146 light years away. It has one confirmed exoplanet orbiting it, about half the mass of Jupiter, named Mintome. Both names were given by the people of Gabon: Itonda meaning "all that is beautiful" in the Myene language, while Mintome is a mythical land in the Fang language.
