Gannets are struggling in numbers. The population of the Uk’s largest colony has declined 30% since the High Pathogenicity Avian Influenza (HPAI) had it’s first outbreak in 2022.
The Guga hunt isn’t significantly damaging Gannet numbers, however the tradition is needlessly cruel and unjust. The guga hunt is a scottish “tradition” than involves annually visiting a gannet colony (that there are only 20 of in the UK) hooking their defenceless chicks with long metal rods, and killing them. Gannets have only one chick a year, meaning the energy gannet parents put into raising these chicks is completely null.
Please do what you can to save gannets from cruelty and extinction, sign petitions if you can, and donate to RSPB if you can.
