My woke take, as someone who has worked in both a public library and a school library, is that we desperately need both more books that are at a higher reading level but a less mature subject matter, and more books that are at a lower reading level but a more mature subject matter, because 8 year olds who are advanced readers are still 8 year olds and don't want to read about graphic violence and torture, and teens and adults who have learning difficulties or who are just later readers for whatever reason are still teens and adults and don't want to read about Billy the Bunny going to school or whatever the hell.
ancient roman women whose husband keeps looking at the neighbour's boy quintus and he never looks at her that way and she can't even chainsmoke in the kitchen because they don't have marlboro blues in ancient times. and she can't even go to the club because they haven't discovered drum and bass music yet. her friend clodia's having visions of a woman named doechii but neither of them knows what that means

Fascinating how what's considered feminine and what's considered masculine can change over time. The rebranding of being a horse girl into being a stereotypical feminine girly trait needs to be studied.
Look at classic children's novels. As recently as the 50s and early 60s, being obsessed with horses as a girl was depicted as strange and tomboyish, and the very concept of being obsessed with horses from early childhood and loving toy horses and desperately wanting your own horse being a "little girl thing" and not a "little boy thing" would send someone from the 1800s and earlier into a coma.
There's maybe a point to be made here somewhere about how when keeping and riding horses stopped being necessary to the functioning of society and became a more "frivolous" thing, it was rapidly rebranded as silly and girly and for women, but what do I know.
i wrote a paper in my masculinity studies class in college about this exact phenomenon, specifically about how high heeled shoes started as a practical way for Persian cavalry to keep their feet on their stirrups, then likely due to that association, became a popular fashion item and status symbol among the upper classes of Europe, before the Great Male Renunciation of the 18th-19th centuries, when men started shunning opulence in favor of utility, leaving them as a fashion item for women instead.
I've joked that the two genders are Aesthetic and Utility before but thats just kinda the case
Was It Their Fault? And Do they THINK it was their fault? A Chart:
how it feels to message a friend who's having Problems that you can't do anything to help with.
#i appreciate how genuine and non-judgemental this comic feels #like left one is not upset at right one for caring while being powerless #and right one seems genuinely distraught and not performative
I'm glad the facial expressions are coming across accurately! It can feel so absurd to say gosh I hope the torment maze removes some fire and rusty nails soon, but alas, sometimes that's all one can do.
It just really gets to me that 10 year old Mob walked into Reigen’s office looking for anyone who could give him advice about his powers that are scaring him. And Reigen looked at him and went “This baby child is absolutely delusional, but he looks like he needs someone to say something important to him right now.” And Reigen spun up some bullshit on the spot that became the guiding compass of Mob’s life.
And it’s very important to clarify that Reigen did not -accidentally- give Mob good advice. Because one of Reigen’s most distinct traits is his ability to come up with genuine advice and tell people what they need to be told. But he’ll do this on the spot. He’ll do it wrapped in bullshit. He’ll camp it alongside some conman string. He’ll go along with anything. He’ll pretend anything is true. The grift is, in fact, integral of it.
And I love this dichotomy in him because he’s so precariously set up at all moments to topple. For anyone to call him on his bullshit and use that to dismantle everything he’s said. He was lying. He was scamming you. He was using you.
And yes, he was. But it wasn’t really for service of the con. It was for service of the customer, who needed to hear something important.
A terrified 10 year old walked in because his powers had just hurt his little brother and he was feeling so alone in the world and so dangerous and so scared. And Reigen saved him the way Reigen does best.
Reigen is a special guy nobody does it like him. What's he doing, you ask? Nobody knows. Including Reigen. but heck if he's not putting his heart and soul into it.
There's a line he gives Mob right after the LOL arc that sticks with me, it comes on the tail of him confirming that Mob is catastrophically inept at reading the room and hearing him out about the "damage" he caused by spoiling the mood of a happy cult.
“Today you saved some people that only you could have saved.”
Pointing out that the weird and inconvenient and frustrating parts of himself are what allowed him to be a hero to people who couldn't be saved by normal means. His inability to match the energy of the cultists led to Dimple showing his true nature, and ultimately to his downfall. It wasn't just Mob's psychic powers that made rescuing them possible, it was his social incompetence.
Reigen on the other hand, is socially overcompetent. Every interaction, no matter how absurd and outlandish and unbelievable and hysterical and stupid, gets his full attention and is treated with the same level of seriousness and gravitas as buying a used car. He makes people feel heard, because he is, in fact, listening with the utmost care. So he can sell them the top-of-the-line century-old jalopy of their dreams for a ridiculously reasonable price. Which will bring them peace and happiness because it's exactly what they need.
Reigen's ability to bullshit just what people need to hear is what allowed him to help Mob in his time of crisis. He thought this little kid was utterly bananas, but he recognized that the distress was very real, and cooked up a rudimentary life lesson on the spot to comfort him that was specifically, perfectly crafted to fit his imaginary psychic situation.
And when the situation ended up being entirely real, the fake advice Reigen cobbled together on a whim is what stopped Mob from spiraling. Nobody else could have done this, because nobody else would have treated his "absurd" fears seriously.
He was in the right place, at the right time, with the right skills to save someone that only he could save.
Reigen is a special guy.

blocking tip: you don't have to wait to have a negative interaction with someone to block them. you can block them without ever interacting with them. I can't tell you how many times I've seen someone being rude to someone else and preemptively blocked them

Introducing the adventuring party, His Majesty's Assembly of the Depths!
Lead by Eleanor of House Hart The Bastard, the roster has included, at various times:
Caewen Veradaughter, the Orc Monster Hunter
Graywacke the Weird, the Troll Scholar
Terence Mason, the Dwarvern Stoneworker
Yellow-Belly* of House Arromits, the Human Jester (*will not tell us their real name)
Kátur Spelless, The Elven Alchemist
(The Adventuring party from my groups His Majesty the Worm game! Caewen and Terence are my PCs. Currently brainrotting about these guys a lot!)
Jurassic Park reboot but it follows the story of one of those B- or C-tier dinosaur theme parks that opened up in the wake of the JP franchise. Like the dinosaur equivalent of Six Flags, Knott's Berry Farm, or Worlds of Fun.
Just, what are the logistics involved in opening up a dinosaur park in the Midwest when you don't have the world's leading genetics firm back you up?
The manga Dinosaur Sanctuary is a speculative edutainment manga about dinosaurs being discovered in the modern day - and with a mix of gene editing and breeding, other extinct species of dino being brought back!
...The snag is that we follow Enoshima Dinoland in Japan, a small dinosaur zoo, a decade after the hype has worn off and Dinosaurs are just another type of animal.
Their T. Rex is in its twilight years. Their triceratops is missing a horn. How do you make visitors care about animals even when they're not at peak fitness? It's as much a story about the logistics of zoo management (on a budget!) as it is about paleontology facts.
