The 03 series' adaptation of the Youswell chapter is rife with differences when compared to the manga chapter (and I really could go on for hours about every single one), but the differences that stick out to me the most (more than Lyra's mere existence lol) are in the scene when Ed is kicked out of the inn.

In the manga, Ed and Al are kicked out because the townspeople recognize the name "Elric", but, to Ed's disbelief (and to our hilarity), Al turns around to instantly inform them that he isn't associated with the military in any way and he gets to go back in.

Obviously, he does this to get a better understanding of why these people hate the military so much, as well as to bring some food out for Ed and dry his tears of betrayal.

The anime does things a bit differently by having Ed speak up before Al could get the chance to. He tells the people that Al has no affiliation with the military, even going so far to say they just met on the train ride there and aren't connected with each other.

While Al's goals aren't reached under quite the same circumstances, he still learns about Yoki's tyranny and returns with food for Ed, who is vividly disappointed for a moment to see that Al snuck off to meet him since it'd ruin his story about them not knowing each other, not to mention how he runs the risk of losing the townspeople's trust by doing this.

The reason these changes are so noteworthy to me is because, while they offer an alternate take on how the boys handled the situation, they don't detract from or go against the boys' characterization. It makes perfect sense for Ed to conjure up a story on the spot so that Al doesn't get into trouble because of him, and it also makes perfect sense for Al to act on his own and come up with a plan without letting Ed know in advance.

Although, I do find it pretty funny how, in both scenarios, Ed wholeheartedly believed Al wasn't bringing anything back for him💀bro was seriously going to power through the hunger.

He's not dead or anything, he just doesn't sound like a prepubescent Alphonse Elric anymore and that period of time feels so special to me, especially when we'd hear this innocent boy monologuing about what makes the world go around and all of the bad things he experienced in his life as he became engrossed in alchemy.

last week while i was beating my brain's infernal spirals back with a stick i qas just thinking that it's funny how october 3rd doesn't feel like nearly as much of a big deal/important thing in fma 03. and i think it's because the show is far less concerned with the idea of resenbool as this safe good place, this heaven that has been sacrificed and put asides til the heroes complete their quest and can finally come home. hell most of the point is that resenbool was never this tranquil paradise: episode 3 stresses that even as children there, neither the elrics nor winry really have peace there. winry learns of her parents' death and grieves visibly, trisha is unhappy and her kids notice and live with it long before she dies. inhabitants died as conscripts in ishbal, wounded soldiers come through during and after the war. ed and al's childhood innocence had frayed and shattered long before their attempt at human transmutation. and crucially, they burn the house without winry or pinako present; it's not just a solemn vow of sacrifice until their mission is fulfilled, but an act showing they are leaving resenbool forever. which they do! they come back of course sometimes, but their departure and attempt to distance themselves from winry and pinako is a lot more drastic and permanent than in the manga or brotherhood (which is part of the tension between ed and winry: in 03 she is far more insecure and feels left behind and abandoned by those she cares about, stuck in the rut and boredom of resenbool, and cast asides by the brothers). and i mean, for all three of them the path doesn't return to resenbool, to a well deserved paradise after the quest has been completed. amnesiac human al stays with winry there for a bit, but he decides to leave once more despite not remembering a bit about october 3rd; likewise, winry has grown beyond the brothers or her hometown and promises to leave it too, and she does! by the time of cos she's long left her hometown too and has been traveling and learning on her own.

so where in the source material the manga kinda follows the default hero's quest with a triumphant return to the well earned domestic paradise, ironically the show that is far less concerned with the notion of october 3rd as a sacrifice also insists much more on the permanence of this: you can never truly go home. the world moves on. there's no such thing as paradise or an idealized domestic bliss to return to, there's no such thing as a place free of violence or suffering, there is no fixing the permanent damage or ties that have grown too distant. what you can do is move on, walk on, follow your own path in an unfamiliar and painful world, but to always strive for what is best. which tbc isnt some grand statement of Why 03 Is Better—it's a pretty common ending too. but it's also a good illustration of the two stories' narrative priorities and concerns and how significantly they diverge
