fma femslash week: riza and winry are state alchemists

“Winry’s stout heart allows her to make difficult and dangerous choices very easily so long as they coincide with her strong sense of duty and morality. Riza decides she must sacrifice her own happiness and comfort and continue to dirty her hands with blood as a soldier in order to bring peace to the people. When meeting Winry, Riza indicated that she also doesn’t like the military, because she is sometimes forced to kill. However, when Alphonse Elric refers to her weapons as ‘a tool for destruction’ later in the story, she corrects him, telling him it is a ‘tool for protection.’” x

Rating: PG-13 (Slight Horror)

Summary: Maria Ross has lost everything.

Bereft of her ship, her crew, her freedom, it would be far too easy to lay down and die. But her savior, when Maria meets her, has other ideas.

Notes: FMA Femslash Week, Day 7, AU Day.  Mermaids.  But not your Disney mermaids.

She knows the fate of those who pry too deeply.  And as the bubbles escape from her mouth, warping the traitorously bright sun even further as they ripple through the water, she realizes that she is about to join them in it.

She struggles fruitlessly as she reaches down, tries to grab the weight tied around her ankle and free herself, but she is sinking fast and the weight of the ocean is already crushing too heavily on her chest, the blur of the sun dissolving into a darker and darker blue.

And as the dark closes around her vision, she knows enough to stop her fight, to give herself to the sea in the dues it demands, that she has always known she may very well have to pay.

The last thing she knows is an eerie song ringing through her skull, echoing around her and filling her to her core as everything goes black.

Well, FMA femslash week is almost over, so I thought that I should go ahead and tag it as such, even if it will never be finished. 😢

Unfortunately my computer’s logic board decided to die at an inconvenient time. Even if I were smart enough to have backed this file up on an external hard drive (which I doubt) I still wouldn’t be able to finish this in time because I have no computer right now.

This is at least what I had the last time I posted about a wip’s progress. 😕

Five Times Riza Said “Mistress” and the One Time Everyone Else Heard

Summary: Maria kind of wants to boss Riza around. Riza kind of wants to let her.

Only, it’s supposed to happen outside work.

Notes: FMA Femslash Week, Day 5, Format Challenge!  I’ve never been too great at 5 + 1 fics or even wrote one without a prompt, so I wanted to give it a shot~

Credit due to @mthaytr, who mentioned an idea that they and @tierfal had had about Riza, Maria, their D/s relationship, and… work slipups.  I just ran with it. Does have BDSM content, including blindfolds, shibari, and riding crops.

“You’re kind of a mess, you know.”

Though Riza pretended to be offended, scoffing outrageously, she couldn’t help but be secretly pleased at the teasing tone.  Months ago, Maria wouldn’t have been even close to comfortable enough in their friendship to crack a joke, let alone one at Riza’s expense.  But now, she had taken one look at the boxes in Riza’s apartment, still full of books after moving in a year ago, and the piles of clean laundry that she still hadn’t folded, and promptly informed her that for someone who was so put-together at work, she needed to work a lot on her personal life.

Riza held the haughty glare for about five seconds before she dissolved into laughter, prompting Hayate to come over and pant happily at her, patpatpating his front legs on the ground excitedly at whatever had made mom happy.

“Okay, look,” Maria continued, drawn into the laughter herself.  “I’m going to dig through this cabinet you call a pantry and find something that I can cook for dinner, and you’re going to…”

At Riza’s second glare, she had to stop to laugh again, then, finally, “Go fill up some of those bookshelves, woman!  They’re sitting right there!”

With a longsuffering sigh, Riza rubbed Hayate’s ear and stood, stretching, to head over to her piles of makeshift cardboard bookcases, sitting next to the empty wooden ones.

“Yes, mistress,” she shot back, voice dripping heavily with sarcasm.

A clatter from the kitchen and a soft gasp, and Riza turned to glance over her shoulder.

Maria wasn’t looking at her, but she was looking through Riza’s cupboards very intently.

With a shrug, she knelt to begin unpacking.

Something Beautiful

Pairing: Gracia Hughes/Izumi Curtis; background Gracia/Maes and Izumi/Sieg (open marriage)

Rating: G (minor language)

Summary: Gracia’s alchemy has always been something special to her, an integral part of her being.  The problem is, when you’re transmuting furniture and cakes, no one else sees it that way.

Notes: FMA Femslash Week, day 4, “Alchemy.”  I’ve really loved the idea of Gracia as an alchemist for a while now, which I touched on in Arm Candy and expanded in here.  Along the way, I got the idea that she and Izumi would make a wonderful couple, and thanks to @fishing-clocks, @verbosewordsmith, and @moonbelowsea for helping me hammer this all out and making sure I wrote this.

Maes lives because I want him to need him for plot reasons; also, he and Gracia (and Izumi and Sieg) have discussions about being in a healthy open marriage (so zero infidelity here).

Gracia remembers the first time that she transmuted something beautiful.

She had been sixteen, a bit of a disappointment in school at that point—she listened to her teachers, of course, participated in class, but she never could bring herself to spend all that time on homework that she should have, not when it was just so… uninteresting.

She had other hobbies—distractions, her father called him.  Though loving, he was also very traditional, as was her mother.  This wouldn’t have bothered her so much—after all, she didn’t mind the thought of growing up, getting married, having children; quite enjoyed it, actually—if it hadn’t been for everything that the mindset came with.

“Alchemy is not a proper pursuit for a young lady,” he had sighed.  "It’s difficult.  Most alchemists don’t get to the point where they can actually transmute until they’re in their twenties, and you’ll be busy by then, probably with a son or daughter of your own.  And no man is going to want to marry a woman who spends more time on her science than him!  Men like to be the breadwinners; if you suddenly start studying ways to put him out of that role, he won’t be happy, and there are just more opportunities for us.“

Gracia had gritted her teeth and pushed away the alchemy books.  Not that she gave it up, of course.  She’d just have to surprise him.  A student in progress might not have good chances, but a full-fledged alchemist?  That would impress anyone, regardless of how "traditional.”

Summary: So Rebecca can’t find a man to meet her standards, even in Central.  That’s fine.  It’s not like she was expecting to, anyway.  Cowardice abounds, and all that.

And then the State Alchemist program accepts its first ever female candidate.

Catherine Armstrong, she comes to learn, is more than she could have hoped for in a hundred years.

Notes: FMA Femslash Week, day 3!  This was supposed to be for “Alchemy,” but I have something even better for tomorrow.  So, instead, have two cute ladies kicking butt and getting together.

When Second Lieutenant Rebecca Catalina had heard from a friend (of a friend of a friend) that the first State Alchemist’s exam since the Promised Day would be held and that she couldn’t miss it, she was… skeptical, to say the least.

Yes, alchemy was pretty cool, but it was also totally beyond her grasp of comprehension, and she liked it that way. Everyone in the academy had been required to take a brief course in its very basics—probably to suss out anyone with enough potential to be useful—and she put that behind her the moment the final class had ended. It was nice to have alchemists around, but she tried not to involve herself in the complicated goings-on that they always seemed to attract. Consider it old-fashioned practicality.

Not that it had always worked, but a girl could try.

Stay Lost On Our Way Home

Pairing: Winry/Riza

Summary:

Winry’s pretty sure the military needs to come up with a policy for civilian contractors. Or at least, some kind of policy for paying her, because as usual she’s being called in to save Ed’s butt. This time, it’s a broken down car and Ed’s stranded with Mustang and Havoc.

Of course, it’s Winry and Riza to the rescue. Again. It’s a long drive from Central City to the middle of nowhere and then back again; it looks like Winry’s going to get a life-changing road trip since she and Riza have to pass the time somehow.
