Why is Bon innately kind? Is there a specific reason/motivation for it? He’s a really good character but his motives are kinda vague for me
Chapter 64, Visible Youth, is where the reader learns about Bon's childhood and (in his opinion) why he is the way he is. He emphasizes that he was given a lot of affection as a kid, but doesn't understand why so he assumes it must have been because he was meant to be king. We can see from the panel below that as a kid Bon was happy-go-lucky and outgoing, which is normal but still endearing and probably why he was so beloved.
When he was still a child, Bon was confused about why he was special compared to everyone else. So he asks Tonari, who tells him this:
Meaning that he's not special because he can see ghosts and the Beholder, or because he has an important destiny. He's special because he has the potential to make people feel loved and happy like he is.
After Tonari leaves to let Bon puzzle out her words for himself, he comes to the conclusion that he's special because he's meant to be the king of Uralis, and decides that the best way to share that is by bettering himself instead of helping others in any meaningful way.
As a result Torta is chosen to be king instead of him, and Bon is no longer sure of how he can fulfill Tonari's wish, which is how the Uralis Arc starts. By the end of it he's learned that ensuring the happiness and safety of others is, to him, more important than his own dream of being king, and that's what Tonari actually meant when she called him special.
Then, to continue Tonari's wish of sharing what makes him special, he travels with Fushi to Renryrr to help them find happiness, and keep the people of Renryrr safe.
