 “oh! i made hotteok, but it’s not like your usual hotteok,” he says with a chuckle. “i used to help around my aunt and uncle’s café in hongdae and my aunt had a hotteok recipe that she would make. it uses your usual sesame and cinnamon filling. but, it’s also stuffed with apples and chocolate chips! there’s also another one to try, but instead of chocolate chips, there’s cheese. the cheese cuts a bit of the sweetness, but it’s really good!”

“ugh, you’re so smart! i swear, people act like it’s a sin to put chocolate on these things. it makes everything better, doesn’t it?” he asks, observing the sweet sauce drizzled onto his pastry. the two were like children paired together, sharing their mutual love for chocolate in between giggles and smiles. jinho knew he’d picked the right person for the outing, duri being the perfect mixture of both a cook and fun loving.

“mm, that makes sense! i’m jealous, i wish i was surrounded by that many street vendors when i was a kid.” tongyeong had it’s fair share of good food, but it mostly had consisted of seafood in the markets near his house. he wished he’d been given as many options as duri might have once had in hongdae, though he isn’t quite sure it’d be wise for the sweet tooth he’d once had.

the anticipation of the other’s reaction gets jinho leaning forward into his chair, and only when he sees the smile appear on the older’s face does he lets out a breath. the boy beams in satisfaction before biting into his own treat. that is...after adding just one more drop of chocolate. as he eats, he listens to the other’s meal, mouth practically watering at the sight.

“i...i’m so excited! it sounds so good.” dropping his own dish to his plate, he does what park jinho does best and shifts his focus to something else in mere seconds. “your family must be geniuses,” he jokes, stomach rumbling at the thought. “because i never thought to put that in hotteok, but...now i can’t imagine my life without it,” giggling, he takes the opportunity to hop up and wash his hands of the chocolate residue. “is it already cooked, hyung? i don’t think i could take waiting much longer, and i just know that you're a great cook.”

that’s what park jinho has asked jaewon just hours before meeting up. he’d always been taught to never lie, and despite knowing he had reason, he couldn’t help the guilt. because it wasn’t the outing that was a lie - the boy had meticulously prepared for a meal to feed two. the catch? there was just...one, slightly life threatening thing he’d managed to leave out - he wasn’t max.

to elaborate, after...extensive begging, he’d managed to convince max into borrowing his phone and clearing the dorm for a few hours (how he did it? jinho had yet to know). there was no way jaewon would willingly agree to any sort of outing with him after their last interaction, so he’d quite dramatically resorted to posing as a unity member through texts. crazy? possibly. effective? obviously. because just as he’s set unity’s dining table, he spots jaewon entering through the front door. he could pass out in fear right there, but, trying his best to keep his composure, he gulps and takes a seat.

“surprise,” he greets, giving a small wave as he braves a smile that exudes insincerity. he was there for one purpose, and one purpose only - to let jaewon know he wasn’t a pushover. at least, he wasn’t anymore. kind people deserved to be treated kind - it was just the way things were. so why did jaewon feel like he had some golden ticket to being a grade-a asshole? it was beyond him. “aren’t you surprised to see me, hyung? thanks to max’s help, i’ve arranged a lovely little dinner.” putting on the most mocking smile he could muster, he gestures towards the table. “ come and take a seat - your foods going to get cold.”

✯— “and...tada!” triumphantly, jinho turns to his older companion with a grin on his face. in his hands, he holds a pan of two large pastries, each shaped like intricate fish. swiftly, as if done many times before, he puts them each on a plate and drizzles just a bit of chocolate over his own before sliding the other plate to duri.

“some people say the extra chocolate is too much, but...i can’t have it without it. have you ever had bungeoppang?” he asks, placing the chocolate syrup onto the table in case duri wanted some. he’d had plenty in his lifetime, and it had been a staple dessert of his childhood. but now that he couldn’t get it as he once had, from the carts of street vendors, he’d resorted to putting his cooking skills to use and making it on his own.

“don’t be shy, try it, hyung!” he ushered anxiously, washing his hands of any dough before waiting expectantly. jinho had been waiting all week for when duri was available to come over just for this. since they were both rather fond of cooking, he’d made a bet that he was the best cook, with the promises of free meals for a week if he was proven wrong. jinho had prepared his meal first, and, sitting with the knight member, begins to eat his own treat. “there’s no way you could beat this,” he teases, words muffled but a childish grin still visible on his face. “speaking of which...what did you make?”

If something similar was the case for Jinho right now, he’d rather have offered comfort in case it was needed. “I napped just now,” he explained dismissively. “’m not really tired anymore now. I was actually considering making dinner. A midnight snack. Something along these lines.” Not that he would be eating, it was too late for him to have anything close to an appetite. “You want something too?”

“okay, okay, i’m sorry! but i’ve come prepared.” after taking his phone out from his sweatpants’ pocket, he turns the flashlight on and slides it across the counter. “here. take it as an apology for scaring you. i don’t want to wake everyone up and turn the light on.” as much of a tease he was, jinho was being sincere. phobias were a very real thing, and even seemingly minor ones such as the dark could be very scary for others.

 the small gesture from the leader causes a comforting warmth to reach him, as he nods in confirmation. “mm, it was. you know me too well,” the younger admits, letting out a soft laugh at himself. “it’s ridiculous, i know it is. i cry all the time, but...i just can’t take bad things happening to animals.” with a swift wiping of his tears, jinho tries his best to recover and sends the leader an assuring smile.   

"fine, but if you’re tired tomorrow, i can’t say i’ll forgive you. who’ll lead us then, me?” he asks, grinning to the male on the other side of the counter before taking a seat on the stool with his drink. jinho was fully aware of his incapability to be in charge of anything larger than the vocal unit, and even then he tended to let the others walk over him. hanbyul’s promises of food, however, send him into a wave of excitement, and with a childish grin he nods. “yes, please. after all, when have i rejected free food? i want something...sweet. like you, hyung!” the phrase is laced with blatant mockery, and accompanied by a soft squeeze to the rapper’s hand.
