Fig 7 From Essay.
The final costume that I analysed was Naomi’s more formal outfit, In the scenes after their divorce, she is seen wearing a much more authoritive costume, of a long black leather midi skirt with a long sleeve button up grey silk blouse. Although this outfit shows Naomi’s new found independence, the silk shirt being a very delicate fabric still hints that she is still slightly vulnerable. The top few buttons are undone and her stockings are showing making the outfit look very “Thrown together” this therefore suggests that she is struggling to keep herself together after requesting a divorce. The colour of her costume in this scene is very dark, suggesting her sadness at this difficult stage in her life.Â
The film links in many ways to Jane Gaine’s theories in regard to costume and how it tells the story, these are just a few examples of the way that the costume throughout this film displays it.
Fig 6 From Essay.
When Jordan and Naomi go through a divorce we see Naomi’s costume change dramatically, she is then seen as vulnerable in nothing other than a small lacy silk nightdress, the fabric reflects her delicate emotions and her vast amount of exposed flesh towards Jordan displays her vulnerability in the current situation. This supports Gaine’s theory of “Dress is seen as transmitting essential information about the character to the viewer. It is an exterior indicator of the inner self.”
Fig 5 From Essay.
When Naomi embraces her new lifestyle being married to successful business man Jordan Belfort, she begins to dress much more authoritatively in a military style costume to show her new found strength, power and significance. This costume then “Reinforces narrative ideas” an idea brought to light by Gaines.
Fig 4 From Essay.
The fourth costume is this LBD which Naomi wears in her first clash with Jordan’s former wife, the costume in this scene shows the contrast between his plain previous wife and glamorous new wife, the costume is therefore used as a function to display the differences between Jordan’s new and old life shown through the contrast between the new and old wife. This supports Gaine’s idea of a “Nostalgic Pastiche” in which “Costume performs a function as opposed to helping the narrative move forward.”
Fig 3 From Essay.
The third costume is this pink number which Naomi pairs with pink stilettos, this scene represents an opposing Gaine’s theory of the idea that “Women are aroused by the imagery designed exclusively for male satisfaction” and therefore suggesting that Naomi uses her sexuality as power to gain authority over her husband.
Fig 2 From Essay.
The second outfit I analysed was the blue keyhole cut dress in which Naomi wears on her first entry into Jordan’s life. I linked this to Gaine’s “Attraction by shock” when time stands still on her entry.
Fig 1 From Essay.
This is the first costume (Or lack of) which I analysed for my contextual essay. I linked Gaine’s theories such as “Sexual-looking” and Laura Mulvey’s theories such as “the male gaze”.
Essay.
For my essay I chose to analyse the Gaine’s theories surrounding the use of costume in cinema. I have decided to analyse the film, “The Wolf Of Wall Street” and the way that the character “Naomi” is styled and how this tells her story.
Social Media Platforms.
Facebook is ever growing in terms of video footage that is shared across the site, this would make it ideal for my fashion film to be shared via.
Social Media Platforms.
Twitter is also a platform in which my film will be distributed on and shared across.
Social Media Platforms.
Instagram is the main social platform which my fashion film will be promoted on.
Film Rationale.
Behind The Scenes.
I have created a behind the scenes film on a Nasty Gal inspired fashion film which was being directed by Laura Woodford.
This fun film shows how the scenes shown in her film were made and matches the fun, girly and playful aesthetic of the “Nasty Gal” brand.
Final Fashion Film.
This is my final fashion film.Â
