Legitimacy of 'customer' in Supreme Court gay rights case raises ethical and legal flags

A Christian graphic artist who the Supreme Court said can refuse to make wedding websites for gay couples pointed during her lawsuit to a request from a man named “Stewart” and his husband-to-be.

To recap: a plaintiff who had not been injured brought a lawsuit against a person who does not exist and SCOTUS took the case so the Christian Nationalist majority could create a law that would never pass Congress, to achieve a result that is wildly out of step with what the majority of Americans want and support.

This shouldn’t just raise flags; it should lead to impeachments.

These six unelected and unelectable politicians cosplaying as Justices have no authority, legal, ethical, moral, or otherwise, that can’t be immediately taken back by the people via our representatives in Congress. We MUST force them to hear us.

Cancer Sucks

It sucks in so many ways. I’m the caregiver for my husband, and we’re looking down the barrel of a possible reoccurrence which means more surgery and more chemo. This is basically living one of my worst nightmares, I am physically, mentally and emotionally exhausted; have been since February. 

And I am reminded how much I hate interacting with well meaning people. I know it’s polite to ask “How are you holding up?” but I also know they are looking for a simple answer so they can feel good about asking. A “It’s hard but we’re hanging in there” or something similar. They don’t want to hear that I can’t sleep and I’m bawling my eyes out during random times of the day. Or the amount of reading I’m doing and the studies and survival statistics are shattering my heart. I’m supposed to smile and give a simple answer to make the person feel better, when all I want to do is cry and tell them I’m barely functioning.

the funny thing about the whole "no one wants to work" trend is that this is, hypothetically, how wages are supposed to go up naturally under capitalism. When wages are too low, workers refuse to work, so businesses raise their wages. The problem is that american companies are so used to paying people scraps and so far removed from the idea of workers having any kind of power or demanding some degree of dignity that they're just completely dumbfounded by this. When everyone refuses to work, their first instinct isn't "oh, our wages are too low" it's to post signs complaining about kids these days and begging people to pwease pwease come back to work I pwomise you won't get the cowonaviwus whiwe being yewwed at by a woman who compwains they made hew food wrong and demands a comped dessewt befowe leaving you a $2 tip

On "Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarves"

Hi, so I know it’s been a long time, but I saw your post on the South Korean animated film “Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarves”, in which it was accused of fatphobia. I just wanted to make it clear that I understand totally where people are coming from with this, especially since I used to think so too, but the fact of the matter is that that ad is simply misinformation; that is not what is depicted in the movie at all. In the actual movie, Snow White is plus-sized and proud and is clearly portrayed as beautiful within the narrative. The movie also allows Snow White to be both strong AND feminine, and she actually dislikes her slim “Red Shoes” form because it makes her physically weaker.

Yes, the dwarves are attracted to her and only help her because she’s pretty, but the whole point is that they’re shallow and need to learn to look past conventional beauty to see that a) fat girls are beautiful too, and b) outer beauty is not all that matters, inner beauty matters too. This is why they were cursed in the first place. They were tall, handsome princes but are now short green dwarves who only look like handsome boys when no one is looking(hence the part of the tagline that says “and the seven dwarves not so short”. The three wooden creatures you see in that image are NOT the actual dwarves, that too is the fault of terrible marketing. They have to kiss the most “beautifullest(sic) woman in the world” to be cured, which doesn’t mean any old hot lady. It has to be someone they genuinely love with all their heart and consider the most beautiful inside AND out.

It’s also refreshing that the boy is the one who has to look past the surface to see who the girl is underneath, because it’s usually the other way around: the girl has to look past the boy’s flaws but the boy is allowed to expect the girl to be conventionally pretty. Here, the girl already likes the short green dwarf, but the boy doesn’t like the fat Snow White. He needs to learn to see her as a person and realize that being fat is not a flaw or a deformity, and that she is also beautiful on the inside. This is made apparent in the scene where he’s a handsome prince talking to his dwarf alter-ego. He admits to liking Red Shoes better, but feels bad when he realizes that Snow White likes him as a dwarf better. It’s a short scene that perfectly captures what the movie’s message is: to look past the surface and not just judge based on shallow and capricious standards of beauty, something boys especially need to learn.

To sum it up, this movie is actually a very heartwarming, humorous tale of self-acceptance, love, and looking past the surface. It simply suffers from bad marketing which Chloe Grace Moretz, by the way, had no control over, and so that makes the movie look more fatphobic than it actually is. So I can understand you being upset, but remember that the marketing of the movie straight up lied as to what it is about and the actual movie is an entirely different–and much more fat-accepting–tale.

I kind of don’t know what to do. The downstairs neighbor that has been complaining about hearing me walk around is starting to have violent outbursts where he slams doors and cusses me out through the walls that shake the whole building. And I swear I’m literally tiptoeing around my own house during normal hours. And sometimes it’s just the cats running around having zoomies and it’s enough to set him off. I’m just existing and I feel like he wants me dead and sometimes I’m literally scared he might do something to me. I had weird things happen to my car a couple of months back and now I’m wondering if it’s him this entire time, trying to vandalize me.

We live in Condominiums so there’s no management that I can complain to. I’ve talked to my HOA and they just made a record about it, but they just said if it gets out of hand call the police. And being a girl, living alone I do worry about… is this just going to make him madder? Is he going to try to do something??? Would the cops really help??? I dread going outside every day and possibly running into him cuz he might verbally abuse me or physically hurt me.

 When he first confronted me about it, it was clear he wasn’t interested in having a convo at all. He talked over me the entire time, was yelling and even brought his dogs which he knew he couldn’t control (he didn’t train them very well and he has scary dog signs all over his house as if that will prevent him from being liable if they ever attack someone.) while I was walking my cat to try to intimidate me, and tried to gaslight me into believing he’s tried to talk to me before. We never talk to each other. I just feel so frustrated. I OWN this condo, so it’s hard for me to just pick up and move. I’m kind of bitter cuz HE’S the one renting his unit.  I deserve to be able to live and walk in my own house wtf. I’m literally scared to move sometimes. 

Anyway if I’m ever missing for long periods of time, please look into my downstairs neighbor he might have murdered me.

Is there any way to complain to the homeowner? I had a similar problem, but I was renting so I was able to move out. I’m so sorry you have to go through this! At least you complained to the HOA, I was too afraid to complain to the rental office because he would know it was me and I was home alone most of the time.

Amidst a pandemic when we’re all trapped at home, when we’re working from home, schooling from home, and our only entertainment outlets are online, this is cruel and unacceptable. 1.2 terabytes might not be bad for an individual, but if you’re a household of 3 or more, this will be terrible for you.
