There are several locations that produce the banded variety of microcrystalline silica in distinctive varieties. The traditional example is the original blue variety from the Chalcedon area of Turkey (see https://bit.ly/2jpD6Cu), many with iron oxide coatings used in so many cameos of antiquity (see https://bit.ly/2JIVS2H for a beautiful and famous example, and an explanation of cameo work). Another more recent one from the new world is Fairburn agate (see https://bit.ly/2refaq2). One of the recent additions to the genre, only discovered in 1992 comes from northern Patagonia in Argentina, near the town of San Rafael in the wine producing province of Mendoza. It is distinguished for bright colours and patterns and has become very popular with both collectors and jewellers.
