If your succulents are getting a bit leggy I’d suggest growing some green onions! At an inch of growth in three days these puppies are sprouting up like weeds. I was thinking about making a little tutorial on how to start green onions from cuttings and the diy planter I made for them. Would you guys be interested in that sort of thing?

@hoardiculturist Hi! It’s me again. Sorry for asking so many questions, but this is my last batch of questions! So I’ve had this succulent for a while now, and I’ve been able to take care of it pretty well, but I have no idea what kind of succulent it is! Could you help me out? Also, any tips? Because it’s getting very tall and starting to lean over. I realize that I should probably repot it, but I haven’t gotten a good pot for it yet. Thanks for your help!

I actually have that same unknown succulent. I have no idea what it is other than that it’s an echeveria. From my experiments with what it can handle so far is next to freezing temperatures and whatever the max temp of Grand Rapids Michigan has been this summer (I think 90F). My mom accidentally zipped my greenhouse one day and it got so hot that it sunburnt some of my plants and this one got squishy. It’s still alive though, so it can withstand some serious temps.

It’s tall (etiolated), like you said, which instead of repotting it I would suggest beheading it, ripping off the bottom leaves, letting it callus over for about 2-3 days, and then repotting it. You can put some rooting hormone on the spots that the leaves used to be once it callus’s over, but I’ve had success without doing that. Also you can use cinnamon as a rooting hormone. I don’t know how well it works, but when I tried it on my rubber tree cutting it rooted, so at least it won’t kill it, haha.

You can also let the ripped off leaves callus over and then lay them on some soil or papertowel and mist them in the morning and they will form new pups. You can also just lay it in the pot of another succulent and it will root with normal weekly/biweekly waterings. Ya know, whenever you usually water your plants.

Also you can take some of the top leaves off of the bottom section (the part below the red line) and it will grow new heads.

About keeping them not stretched out, I would place them in a brighter window if you have one. South facing preferably. If you don’t have one, then I totally feel your pain. I plan on buying a grow light for the winter months because I only have one window in my apartment and my plants really hate it.

Revisiting this post because some of the leaves have fallen off on their own, and it looks like they have started growing smaller versions of this plant? Lol is that normal? Just wondering how that happens because it seems like some leaves have done that and others have not

Totally normal! It’s a form of propagation that I love doing since it’s super easy. Some will sprout babies and others will not. All depends on amount of light, how they broke off, if they were allowed to callus over before getting wet, and some other trivial things. They use the energy they have stored from in the petal to grow a little clone of the parent plant. Like the graptoveria Superbum picture here^^

Give them some nice sun and water as usual

I’m trying to fertilize them without burning but I’m already seeing signs of fertilizer burn /cry

Try diluting the fertilizer or only pouring it on the soil and not the leaves. OR you can try the fertilizer I used, it has yet to burn my babies and it makes up to five gallons. I usually make about 3 ½ gallons so that I can use every last drop. It’s called pootea and it comes in a cute little tea bag. http://www.manuretea.com

A guide on how to propagate succulents

1. Offsets

Sempervivum

Aloe

Haworthia

Gasteria

(but echeveria, graptopetalum, sedum …. As well! see the tip at 1.1)

1.1   “How do I get them?”

A mature plant will produce offsets at the base of the stem (sometimes it looks like they grow between the lower leaves!). 

Wait until the pup/offset has grown big enough before pulling it off (offsets grow faster when they’re still attached to the mother plant because they’re not independent yet and can spend all their energy on growing instead of surviving). Preferably wait until the pup has roots of its own. Dig around the base of the plant until the roots are visible and then either pull the pup off or cut it off as close to the mother plant’s stem as possible. (Keep as much of the roots of the pup intact! but it’s okay if there are no roots though)

TIP: when you behead a succulent, keep the lower part of the stem instead of throwing it away. If you get lucky new offsets will grow on the stem! + Sometimes new offsets will appear where a leaf has fallen off

1.2   “What to do now?”

Let the cut of the pup callous over for a few days and plant the offset in soil. It’s that easy! When you pull off a pup, the mother plant will have the space again to grow a new pup so expect to have an army of little succulent babies in no time.

2.1   “How?”

Choose a big healthy leaf to start with. When propagating succulents from leaves you’ll have the most success when the whole leaf is intact after being pulled off the stem. You can propagate damaged succulent leaves when the “tip” (idk scientific words english is not my mother tongue!) is intact, but it’s more likely to fail compared to if the tip would have been intact. (I never throw anything away until i’ts completely dead and sometimes after months of waiting a leaf starts to root! so be patient) Also choosing a bigger leaf will make propagation easier and faster. 

2.2   “What to do now?”

Simply lay the leaf flat on soil in indirect sunlight. First your leaf will callous over and after a few weeks roots and/or a plant will grow. Don’t water your baby until it has roots and even then it’s only to stimulate the roots: your plant will take up the water stored in the leaf it’s attached to. Once the leaf is shrivelled up you can water it as you would do with a normal plant (it technically is just a miniature version of the mother plant). Remember, it’s always better to underwater than to overwater your plant! Thirsty plants (and babies) recover fairly quickly and wrinkles are nothing to worry about (just don’t let your plants dry up and become crispy and die)

The cell tray is a mix of 21 Echeveria Black Prince, 15 Echeveria Dusty Rose, a Mystery prop found in my car, 3 Graptopetalum amethystinum leaves and the beheaded top, 4 Echeveria Curly Locks/Blue curl (Haven’t been able to ID it for sure), and the 6 cell tray on it’s own is singles of Sedum morganianum, Sedeveria Jet Beads, Plectranthus tomentosa, Echeveria chroma, and Pachyphytum compactum ‘Little Jewel’.
