About to watch Backrooms, I am so fucking excited aaaahhhh I have loved this concept since it's conception holy shit
Backrooms was NOTHING like what I expected, yet I absolutely loved it. So fucking weird and stays true to the Kane series on YouTube! It did add so many new and untouched elements that just highlight his endless creativity surrounding this concept.

Why Do Some Lizards Change Colors?
by Whit Gibbons
One of the most commonly seen lizards in the southern states is the green anole, also known as the North American green anole or Carolina anole. (Its scientific name is Anolis carolinensis.) Although more than 400 species of anoles are known to science, the green anole is the only one native to the United States. Most people appreciate seeing them in their yards. I contacted Tom Jenssen, an expert on the subject of color-changing behavior in green anoles. During his career as a professor at Virginia Tech, Tom observed thousands of green anoles while conducting research on the species. His observations confirmed categorically that the color of a green anole has nothing to do with what the lizard is standing on. One on a green leaf can be brown; one on dark soil can be green. He indicated that factors causing a green anole to exhibit the brown color phase are not completely understood but he explained the biological mechanism...

Population could be declining for rare species of salamander found almost exclusively in Knox County
In Knoxville's caves, the endangered Berry Cave Salamander clings to survival as conservationists work to protect them.
Inside a network of caves below the former Ross Marble quarry at Ijams Nature Center, a rare salamander in the world survives in near total darkness. The endangered Berry Cave Salamander (Gyrinophilus gulolineatus) has only ever been documented at eleven historical locations worldwide. And according to a 2017 survey, researchers were only able to confirm the species at four of those sites — three of them in Knox County. “That’s a pretty heavy burden of responsibility on the landowner,” Ben Nanny, the conservation director at Ijams Nature Center, said. One of those protected cave entrances sits behind massive iron gates installed at Mead’s River Cave in 2008. The gates are designed to keep people out while still allowing bats and other wildlife to move freely through the cave system. Dr. Matthew Niemiller, a biologist and associate professor who has spent years studying cave species in Tennessee, says cave ecosystems often function like isolated islands...

species with funny binomials discovered this year
Zig (genus de novo) zag (a Malagasy legless skink related to Paracontias), March 2026. Zig is the first new genus of Malagasy skinks discovered since the 19th century, so this is quite notable! New species discoveries are common, new genus discoveries are much rarer. Some new Scincidae genera have been named recently in the form of splits from other (wastebasket taxon) genera, however, discovering a completely unknown highly divergent lineage like this is a rarity. Zig zag is a special little boop noodle.
Solenostomus snuffleupagus (sp. nov), May 2026 (literally, study was released a week ago), a new species of ghost pipefish, named for its fuzzy appearance bearing resemblance to Mr. Snuffleupagus from Sesame Street (pictured above). The genus Solenostomus contains six other species of ghost pipefishes. However S. snuffleupagus is so highly divergent in appearance, that when it was spotted in 2001 it was immediately known to be strange. It took 25 years of searching the Great Barrier Reef to officially find & scientifically describe this bizarre fish.
S. paradoxus, the type species of Solenostomus.
S. leptosoma, another species, to make clear the typical appearance of a ghost pipefish and why S. snuffleupagus is distinctive.
Though not all species were sequenced, genome sequencing suggests that S. snuffleupagus is the most evolutionary divergent of all Solenostomus (Maroubra, a syngnathid true pipefish, is used as the outgroup).
For context, what Solenostomus is:
Solenostomus is a monotypic genus (the only genus in its family) in the family Solenostomidae. They comprise the sister taxon to the Syngnathidae (the true pipefishes, seadragons, and kin, which contains the famous seahorse Hippocampus). Unfortunately, in Solenostomus, males do not get pregnant (the only thing that would have made S. snuffleupagus even more incredible), but they are closely related to the true pipefishes (all of which exhibit male pregnancy).
Those are two incredible discoveries within just the span of two months, here's to more wonderful scientific names!
Damn I'm aroace, and also agender. I'm literally the definition of a nothing burger.
