Italian expressions with “Lacrima” (teardrop)

Essere in lacrime = to be in tears

Essere in un fiume/mare di lacrime (lit. to be in a river/sea of tears) = to be in a flood of tears

Avere le lacrime agli occhi = to have tears in one’s eyes

Commuovere qualcuno alle lacrime = to move somebody to tears

Strappare le lacrime = to move forcibly somebody to tears 

Ingoiare/ingoiarsi le lacrime = to drink one’s tears

Trattenere/reprimere le lacrime = to hold back one’s tears

Rompere/prorompere/scoppiare/sciogliersi in lacrime = to burst into tears

L’imperfetto e il passato prossimo - Italian grammar

Quando usiamo l’imperfetto e quando il passato prossimo? = When do we use imperfect and when past simple?

1. Imperfetto = Imperfect

a) Azione passata abituale- ripetuta = Action in the past which was usual/ repeated

Di solito andavo al lavoro in macchina. = Usually, I was going to work by car. Da giovane non studiava molto. = (as young, lit.) As a young person, she/ he was not studying a lot. Venivano ogni giorno a casa mia. = They were coming every day to my house.

b) Azione in un momento preciso non conclusa  = Action in a precise moment which is not concluded

Ieri alle 10 dormivo. = Yesterday at 10 I was sleeping.  Il 2 marzo ero già in Italia. = On 2nd of may I have already been in Italy.

2. Imperfetto + imperfetto

a) azioni contemporanee  = parallel actions

Mentre mangiavo, leggevo il giornale. = While I was eating, I was reading the newspaper. Quando lui parlava, lei era sempre nervosa. = When he was talking, she was always nervous. Camminava e parlava al telefono. = He was walking and talking on his phone.

3. Passato prossimo

a) azione conclusa  = concluded actions 

Sono rimasta a casa tutto il giorno. = I stayed at home the whole day. Ho studiato dalle 5 alle 8. = I studied from 5 to 8. Ho dormito fino alle 11. = I slept till 11.

4. Passato prossimo + passato prossimo

a) azioni successive concluse  = 2 followed, concluded actions

Ha aperto il frigorifero e ha preso il latte. = He opened the fridge and took the milk. Primo ha acceso la luce e poi la tv. = Firstly, he turned on the light and then the TV. Ho chiamato Francesco e abbiamo parlato un sacco. = I called Francesco and we talked a lot.

5. Passato prossimo + imperfetto 

a) azione in corso interrota  = interrupted actions

Mentre camminavo, ho visto il cane. = While I was walking, I saw the dog. Quadro ero a Roma, ho visitato il Vaticano. = When I was in Rome, I visited the Vatican.  Mentre ero in macchina, è suonato il cellulare. = While I was in the car, the phone rang.

A new italian grammar post! I must admit, this is a grey area for me and I am not 100% sure whether the translations are correct, but the usage itself is.  Anyone who speaks italian is more than welcome to correct me and add anything else relevant.  <3

Hey! Sure, no problem ^^ Here goes my answer, ‘cause it was too long to be a reply, haha.

The Italian sentences are correct (besides a few minor things that could easily be typos, like “primo” instead of “prima” [primoa ha acceso la luce…] or “interrota” instead of “interrotta”), but I’m not 100% sure about the English translation.

Il 2 marzo ero già in Italia translates to On May 2nd I was already in Italy; also, the usual/repeated action in the past group, for example, sounds a bit off: I’d rather use past simple (or used to/would + infinitive, depending on the circumstances) for those. That being said, English is only my second language, so you might want to fact-check that with a native ;)

Overall, you did a great job! It’s a tough subject to summarize, so kudos to you! ;)

I work (and walk) on a college campus. I’ve lost count of how many men I’ve smacked shoulders with.

Recently, I was standing outside my son’s classroom waiting to talk to his teacher. I stood on one side of the hallway, not even close to the center. At some point, a man came walking along. I was standing right in his path, but the hallway was empty, so I logically expected him to swerve around me. Instead he kept walking right toward me, got to me, and stopped, as if waiting for me to get out of his way. I didn’t; I just smiled politely at him. He finally walked around me, clearly annoyed that I hadn’t leapt out of his manly path.

Now I’m wishing I’d leapt aside, taken off my jacket and laid it on the floor before him, then bowed deeply and said, “My Liege!”

Honestly this post changed how I carry myself when walking alone in public, or in a situation where I’m the one leading. People definitely move for the murder gaze.

Confirmed. I once had to rush back inside a convention hall as the con was closing in order to a retrieve a sick friend’s medication, and I didn’t understand why people in the crowd were jumping out of my way (literally—one guy vaulted a table) until I realized I was dressed as the Winter Soldier and doing the Murder Walk because that’s just how I walk in those boots. I got the meds, got out, and made a mental note.

I repeated the experiment later, wearing the boots but otherwise my usual clothing and mimicking the expression I thought I’d had at that moment. People parted like I was Charlton Heston.

I now wear that style of boots whenever possible. I recently had a man do a double-take as I walked by and ask me, politely, where I had served because I “looked like a soldier.” I’m not current or former military. I was wearing a flowy purple peasant top and looked as un-soldierlike as possible.

Moral of the story: wear comfortable shoes, square your shoulders, and walk like you’ve been sent to murder Captain America.

I do this now. Stand my ground. Men look flabberghasted that i wont move out of the way. The most annoying thing is when i’m walking along holding Superpups hand (he’s 2.5 years old), and people walk right up to us and expect to go between us… so for me to let go of my toddlers hand for the sake of them. One person i actually had to put my free hand out and onto their chest to block the person to stop before they ploughed into us.

I’ve decided to study Swedish!

I’ve decided to (attempt to) study a new language! And after much considersation, I’ve decided Swedish is what I’d love to learn. And unlike any other language I’ve attempted to learn, I’m actually very excited about this!

The problem is: I’m completely lost on where to start. If y'all could recommend anything or help point me in the right direction, I would be so very thankful! Even if it’s a just good website for translations or a textbook you felt really helped you. Please give me advice! I’m very new to this!

Hey there! I’ve got a few cool websites you can check out for starters:

Duolingo obviously is a great place to start, it’ll teach you basic grammar and vocab. Memrise also has detailed community-made vocab lists to practice with.

Clozemaster is a great way to learn new words in the context of real sentences compiled from books and news stories.

My favorite online Swedish dictionary is Ord.se. It offers translations into 7 different languages, and even includes idioms and example sentences. The website is all in Swedish though, so just be prepared!

@spraakochlunnefaaglar uploaded some amazing folders full of language textbook PDFs. This folder has 6 Swedish textbooks to flip through!

When you’re ready to practice listening, Sveriges Radio has 5 Swedish channels (and a Finnish channel, too!) to flip through, including a simple, clear program for beginners called Klartext.

Here’s Ba Ba Dum, a colorful game for learning new vocab through pictures and listening exercises.

That’s all I can think of off the top of my head. I’d also recommend searching through my #resources and #swedish tags; those are sure to have plenty of other websites you can check out!

Ciao! If we’re writing a letter in Italian, what would be the Italian equivalent of “dear” and “sincerely”? Grazie!

Dear => caro/a (according if you’re writing to a boy or a girl… remember the plurals if you’re writing to more people together, i.e. two brothers or sisters; ofc you can repeat “caro/a” in front of each name).If the letter is formal, it’s better to avoid “caro/a” and use “gentile” (kind), “gentilissimo/a” (very kind) or “egregio” (excellent) or “spettabile” (esteemed), also with companies/offices. At times also “carissimo” can be found (very dear).Sincerely => cordialmente BTW if you’re writing to a friend/relative you can use “un abbraccio” (a hug) intead of sincerely. If you’re writing to a lover “baci” or “un bacio” (kisses / a kiss).If the letter is formal, we might close it with “cordiali saluti” or “distinti saluti” (warm regards, kind regards) too, instead of “cordialmente”. (I haven’t read “cordialmente vostro/tuo” or “sinceramente vostro/tuo” in any letter, + the latter especially sounds a bit archaic to me, as if we were in “sense & sensibility” movie).

Sorry I just added a couple of other words used for formal letters instead of “caro”. Also, you can use abbreviations for those: Gent.ma = Gentilissima Gent.mo = Gentilissimo Sig. = Signor (Mr) Sig.ra = Signora (Mrs.) Sig.na = Signorina (Miss) Egr. = Egregio Egr.ia = Egregia Spett.le = Spettabile Stim.mo = Stimatissimo (OFC you can abbreviate the plurals as well) some more abbreviations here

In an unformal/friendly letter you can also use “con affetto” (“whit love”) as “sincerely”. Is commonly used. :) Es: “Cara Luisa, Tanti auguri di buon compleanno! Spero di vederti presto per poterti dare di persona il tuo regalo. Con affetto, Manuela”
