I GOT A FUCKING RAISE THE POTATO WORKED WTF
This potato works. Every. Fucking. Time.
Then bring me luck
the day after I posted this last time I was notified that I was selected for a really cool mentorship gig and got an unrelated glowing review at work
You certainly are not foul to look upon and if you were taken by my own elven impracticalities I would not be opposed to your courting. (forever-in-exile)
@foreverinexile
FAFFAADDASASAÂ NO. NOPE. NOPE NOPE NOPE.
Indeed "he" intended to make you feel better but it appears I have not. My apologies, but I did speak the truth...
when you make a starter call an have no idea how to write one of them because you have no idea of how your muse would interact with the other muse.Â
so just are just stare at it for fifty years like:
Using the appropriate vocabulary in your novel
It is very important that the language in your novel reflects the time and place in which the story is set.
For example, my story is set in Italy. My characters would never âride shotgunâ, a term coined in US in the early 1900s referring to riding alongside the driver with a shotgun to gun bandits.Â
Do your research! A free tool that I found to be very useful is Ngram Viewer.Â
You can type any word and see when it started appearing in books. For exampleâŠone of my characters was going to say âgazillionâ (I write YA) in 1994. Was âgazillionâ used back then?
And the answer isâŠYES! It started trending in 1988 and was quite popular in 1994.
Enjoy ^_^
This is really important, especially because language can change in very unexpected ways.Â
For example, did you know that before 1986 people never said âI need toâ?Instead, they were far more likely to say âI ought toâ, âI have toâ, âI mustâ, or âI shouldâ.
Donât believe me?
Anyway, most people wonât notice subtle changes like that. But your reader will notice and be confused when characters in your medieval world use metaphors involving railroads and rockets.
One of the things you can do besides use Google Ngrams is to read books or watch movies written in the time period you want to set your story. The key here is that they canât just be set in that time period, they have to have been made in that time period.
Also, thereâs a Lexicon Valley episode on this very topic which I highly recommend. Itâs called Capturing the Past.Â
SEE ALSO Etymonline.  Word origins and when theyâre first recorded. So, say I wanted to find out when a âcoffee breakâ became a thing â around the 1950s, as seen in magazine adverts â or characters might talk about more genrallly âtaking a breakâ from the 1860sâŠ
(renegadeinfiltrator) [Query: What materials are the most effective for the weapons you create?]
@renegadeinfiltrator
Youâd think that metal would be a reasonable go-to, but fun thing about Atlantis: itâs underwater. Extracting metal from ore (or finding it) and then shaping it is pretty much impossible if you donât know the right magic to do what you need to.
So that leaves bone, shell, and stone. Occasionally shark teeth or octopus or squid beaks. I prefer bone or shell, coral if I have no other option. Stone works, but it dulls easilyâ and in my experience doesnât take magic too well.
Magic-reinforced bone and shell on the other hand⊠With the right spells you can get either to be almost as hard as diamond. (At the same time for a lot of things you donât want them too hard because then if something breaks then youâve got less control over where the break is, and in the worst cases you might end up with a broken arm.)
Bone works best due to the fact that thereâs more material. (And the fact that it was alive at one point might have something to do with it. Sometimes magic works better with contained energy even if itâs old energy. Ignore me talking magic technicalities.)
Shell has the same sort of energy quality bone does, but unless itâs turtle shell itâs usually pretty thin and flimsy. And fun thingâ you canât lock spells in place when youâre trying to shape something. Think of it like going from working on something reasonable, and then suddenly in the middle of working on it itâs like trying to carve a chunk of metal. So if a piece of shell breaks while itâs getting shaped, thatâs it. Itâs done. Complete shark shit.
Coralâs pretty much my last resort because while I can harden it, there are a LOT of break-points due to the holes scattered through it. But I prefer it to shark, seal, or whale teeth because thereâs more material to work with (and Iâve heard stories about creepy things happening around people who decide to make tools from whale, dolphin, aâlansha, or porpoise teethâ which is kind of weird because those same stories donât crop up when it comes to using the bone).
Octopus and squid beaks are pretty much impossible to get (most of those things end up way deeper than I feel comfortable going), and there are occasional creepy stories about tools made from those too.
So, short answer: magic-reinforced whale bone.

âI perish the thought of involving you in our doom⊠You are not bound to our oath, and that is a tremendous comfort. I would see that you remain untouched by this madness.â
âI may not be bound, but I cannot avoid being affected by it. Not when everyone I care about is a part of it and I am told to stay back and watch. There has to be something I can do to help.â
âMy dear nephew, what would you do to help? Would you pick up blade and bow or smith words of wit and sense to the dark one and our kin so they might relinquish what is our birthright?â
âWhatever I could, uncle. It is not right for me to do nothing when you are all doing what you can. I would rather not be set aside as useless, and you are rather more likely to know what I could do than others.â
âThen help us in this way; survive. Remember us in absence of this infernal curse. Do not let the texts paint us as murderers and thieves, though surely we deserve as such. Remember us as the fallen fair, shadows in twilight. And do not hate us.â
âI could never hate any of you,â he sighed. âYet you are being far to hasty to assume your death and ultimate infamy. You may not die through this, with your chance of survival increased if you would tell me what to do to help. Unless you would rather i fight without being any the wiser as to my location and plans?â
Maglor sighed then, perhaps he had been overwhelmingly dramatic and condescending to his brilliant nephew. No longer a child he was allowed to ruin his life if he so pleased. There he went again! Maglor reigned himself back some, there was no certainty in any end, if there even ever was an end to anything. âVery well Tyelpe,â he began with a much brighter disposition. âThere always is a great need for a skilled metallurgist, and though your uncle will say nothing, the prosthetic your father crafted is in need of repair.â
âThat prosthetic is always in need of repair,â Tyelpe muttered under his breath, âbecause Nelyo doesnât seem to understand tools need actual maintenance and not just literal hand-waving.â Louder, he addressed his uncle. âAnything else? That wouldnât take too long, itâs reasonably simple.â
Maglor still had his reservations for involving their precious nephew, but he could not push him away forever. A small amused smile tugged the corners of his lips upwards then as he considered his older brother. âHe claims the maintenance is too difficult for him to manage with one hand, which he profusely reminds us of. So perhaps a new model would be something more to his liking. Your father will probably pout though.â

My art for @elesianneâs wonderful character Tinweriel!
Tinweriel is my take on the unnamed, unknown woman who was Maglorâs wife.
Maglor and Tinweriel meet when they are teenagers and Tinweriel, who is some years older, is acting as an assistant to Maglorâs new music tutor. They become friends as they grow up and become more equal, delighting in making music and dancing together. It takes years of convincing and courting from Maglor to deepen their relationship beyond friendship, but once they are married they are fiercely loving and loyal to each other.
Tinweriel is loyal to Fëanor as well, speaking out for his views during the unrest of the Noldor and learning to fight along with Maglor and his brothers when Fëanor forges weapons. She goes with Maglor to Beleriand, fighting and guarding the Gap together with him. She meets a bloody end in the Second Kinslaying, but even after that she walks alongside her husband in his dreams.
So far there are only two stories about Maglor and Tinwerielâs relationship in the FĂ«anorian marriages series, but there will be more. Consonance, the story of their courtship, is currently ongoing.
