☂ semi-hiatus announcement

    THIS BLOG IS KIND OF A MESS and, since I tend to focus on drafts, I haven't been making the time to clean up. But I'm not doing anybody any favors in the long run by letting my favorite muse's blog run on fumes, as it were, so that changes starting now.

    Updates will include:

gutting & reorganizing my nav/pages

tag fixes

new verses

a URL change and new banners!

so you can probably see how this will take me some time. What this means for my followers is that

generally I will be lurking, not active;

replies will still be done, but very slowly;

I still owe a milestone post.

    I will return once I'm finished spring cleaning which, hopefully, will be within the month! Thank you all so much for seeing me through this, and my ask box is always open in case you have any questions.

      “I mean, why would anyone…?”

      Ling trailed off, finally noticing the tide of people passing by, most of them nudging each other and giving the pair some baffled looks. He raised an eyebrow, as if he hadn’t the slightest idea what was up with them. Really, it was like they’d never seen a man in uniform before! Ling would have flexed a nonexistent muscle, had he not been sure half of them would have fainted in the middle of the street or whacked him over the head with their parasols.

      Ling, once again, had lost his train of thought or rather, it had crashed at the sight of another group, all girls, strolling by. He could hardly hear Jane’s questions now, catching a few words like ‘sword’ and ‘influence’ and ‘military’ and muttering something vague in response. He only snapped out of his daze when a couple of the girls glanced back at him. He offered them a flashy smile, following it with a wave of his skinny fingers, trying to remember what Jane had been saying a moment ago.

      “Jane, please,” said Ling in a lofty voice or at least, a great attempt at one, considering his normal voice had all the pleasantness of someone running their nails across slate. “Mr. Xiao is my father!” He waited for a few seconds as if expecting her to lapse into giggles at his ‘brilliant’ quip. “Well, nooooo…but check this out!” That said, Ling reached into the collar of his uniform, procuring a large plaque and holding it up for all to see.

    [☂]—"Kindly behave yourself!" Jane hissed, feeling every inch the proverbial goose. She grabbed (unsuccessfully) at Ling’s arm, hoping to subdue the foolish fellow, but it was too late. The coterie of debutantes looked utterly discomfited by his display…not that Jane could blame them…then, to a woman, their gazes shifted to her.

    In the first moment of horror she saw shock on their faces, bewilderment too; the cattier sort looked smug since, after all, one expected little else from a girl like Jane who couldn’t afford her own Season. But the worst part, realized Jane, was that they’d danced, laughed, eaten ices at the same balls and musicals, yet half that crowd didn’t recognize her at all.

    In the next, Jane had turned away, quickening her pace and raising her parasol to shield her eyes from the sun. The sudden, harsh light made her eyes water. That was all.

    It was Jane's turn to stare fixedly away from her walking companion, in the event at a large willow tree in the near distance. Despite the fair weather, a wind had blown Jane and Ling along all the while and now the tree's branches swayed, whispered, blurred alarmingly in her vision.

    And Ling's words, too, reached her as if she stood at the bottom of the ocean. Jane spared barely a glance for the medal he had produced as if from nowhere. "What good does that do you?" Jane half-mumbled. "If no-one ever sees it."
