(On his characterโs feelings)
Isn't โloveโ a ridiculously big word? When I tried to explain that, I felt like I was moving a little away from the feeling we had experienced. It's both love and passion, but at that moment, there was something like an explosion inside me saying, โI need this personโ or โI want this person right now.โ Through dance, there was a mutual explosion and recognition at a very high level. I think you can express it with words like love or affection, but the feeling that resonates most with me is that โI needed him.โ
(There are moments when the body reacts before words can be spoken. Machida also describes their relationship as being akin to โlonging for what one does not have.โ)
Humans are greedy and inevitably desire what they do not have. Because we end up at completely opposite points, we envy and want what we do not possess. I think it was a relationship where we exchanged various things while battling each other.
Ryoma on Keita and vice versa :
"It's truly amazing to enjoy things head-on. He has the ability to find joy," Machida praised again. Amidst such conversations, Takeuchi brought up something he suddenly remembered.
"Machida-kun, I'm not sure if this will make you happy, but there's someone who comes to mind," (Takeuchi)
"Someone? Who?" (Machida)
"An overseas actor, someone I thought resembled you a bit," (Takeuchi)
"Sean Penn. Machida-kun, you look kind of like Sean Penn." (Takeuchi)
"(Laughs) That's a bit too much. Too much! It's not that I'm not happy, but that's clearly an exaggeration." (Machida)
While denying with a laugh, Machida listened as Takeuchi shared a scene he was particularly eager to talk about. โIn practice, there's a scene where Sugiki-sensei and Shinya are dancing the tango, and at that moment Sugiki-sensei says, 'Let's take a break.' That scene is truly amazing. Iโve watched it over and over, and I donโt really know why, but every time I see it, it makes me want to cry. I think itโs because I feel itโs so good. It's so good that I end up laughing while crying."
With those words, Machida laughed and said, "Takeuchi-kun is really a strange person."
Through their roles, their understanding and trust in each other deepened. "I trust Machida-kun as one of the top-class fellow actors. That's why I could entrust various things to him," (Takeuchi) said.
"Without trust, you can't dance," responded Machida.
Takeuchi unhesitatingly explained why he was able to master ballroom dancing. "I trusted the dance teachers, trusted the director, trusted my partner Doi (Shiori), trusted Machida-kun, and in the end, I was able to trust myself. That's all there is. You couldn't dance this dance without complete trust." Even after filming ended, that experience remains deeply ingrained in both of them. "Even now, sometimes I go to see the teacher and dance. I feel shocked when I can't dance like I did then, but I still love it because it's fun," (Takeuchi) said.
"That's amazing. For me, when I remember that sense of being pushed to the limit, I start to tremble, so I'm too scared to go. But because I had that experience, there's also a sense of longing. Looking back now, I feel like 'I could have gone further,' and there's a part of me that yearns for it. It lingers with me," (Machida) said.
Excerpts from this interview, which methinks is more fun than the others. Maybe because it was conducted a day before the premiere, on the 18th, and the two actors had long established their camaraderie.
