The queer rep in ISAT is so good at breaking stereotypes. Like, the aroace character is nearly always the stoic one, and they could have so easily made Odile aroace, and for a moment I thought they were going to when they asked her if sheâd ever been in love, but then she wasnât, in fact, Odileâs former love interests gender isnât specified which leaves Odileâs sexuality completely open to be interested in any gender, effectively making her pan in my brain and thatâs just also something that isnât often seen in uptight stoic characters, since bi and pan people are so often portrayed as fun or promiscuous, and Odile is the opposite of that. and it was Mira who is the aroace character. Mira, the one who is so sweet and happy and positive and loves reading romance. Which honestly her tastes in romance media are like the aro acest things ever lol and I want the spinoff where her and Odile have book club. And she can still be all of those things and also be aroace and that doesnât take away from that or change who she is in any way and I love that. And then Isabeau being trans, like I did not expect that upon early introductions to his character because weâre just not used to seeing trans men character who are buff and strong in media. Thatâs just not the what gets shown often, those archetypes are almost always cis men, and if theyâre not theyâll occasionally be given to a woman for subversion or mocking comedy. Which is an interesting character thing as well for Isa, that he leans super hard into a masculine stereotype and doesnât like it and needs to find some balance because he can still be his new self that he likes being while also being smart, he doesnât have to give up old things about himself just because heâs changed. Which is likely referencing real world experiences of trans people feeling like they have to give up hobbies and attributes of themselves that they like just because itâs framed to be stereotypically a hobby of the gender they are transitioning away from, but thatâs not true, gender stereotypes are stupid, do what you want forever. And then thatâs how theyâre also able to get away with putting Loop in the story without critique of them fitting into the nonhuman nonbinary other and also silly flamboyant personality you always see tropes, theyâre allowed to be that because A they used to be human anyway, and B there are two other human nonbinary characters. Well, Siffrin is technically Loop and also debatablely not human and also not the exact same flavor of non binary as loop using different pronouns and such, but close enough. And Bonnie is a completely unexpected nonbinary character as this very young kid who just also is nonbinary is something not seen often since in our world, since kids are so restricted in what they can know about gender identity and how we raise them in tight gendered boxes, they donât usually have the language to describe this stuff that young, but in their universe, Bonnie does and thatâs awesome. Anyway, yeah, clap it up for awesome ISAT queer rep.
