Alternate ending + Overwhelmed by alien forces, Thor was the only surviving hero of the Battle of New York
Thor stood his ground, finally allowing the arm holding Mjolnir to drop at his side. The blood and sweat and grime of battle that now covered his skin normally would have invigorated him. After such a fight he normally would have felt his heart pumping, his body surging with the adrenaline of a true and proper fight. Then again, in the past after such a battle he’d never had a loss such as this one.
He let Mjolnir fall from his grasp to the ground where it landed with a heavy thud. He wasn’t sure he had the right to pick it up. Beside him lay the Captain’s Shield cracked in two. Its bearer lay beside it, unmoving, unblinking. His heart was heavy for the soldier. He had truly been a warrior that was an honor to fight beside.
He took step after agonizing step, unable to look at the fallen body of the mighty Hulk. He hadn’t thought it possible that Banner would fall. But there he lay just as still as the Captain. He was mighty, yes, but so were the forces of the fallen Chitauri.
He could not bear to look at the broken bodies of the Widow woman and the archer. They lay in rubble, her pushed from the ruined Tower’s edge in angry retaliation for her plan to open the portal. The archer had tried to save her and had been struck down for his efforts. He walked past them, making his way closer to the Tower.
There before him in the rubble lay the crushed armor of the Iron Man. He did not dare to see the broken body inside. He had given his life to close the portal, had fallen to his doom. Just as all his comrades had, the Iron Man had ultimately fallen in this great battle for Earth.
Many wars he’d fought and many soldiers he’d seen killed. But these brave warriors… they were not soldiers. They were heroes though, sworn to protect Midgard. He too had made such a vow, but he realized as he watched his brother weakly striding towards him, they had paid far too high a cost for his negligence.
