Fist of the North Star

What an excellent fucking story. The rule of cool must have been born with this manga, holy shit.

Kenshiro is such a wonderful role model--he suffers and struggles, but holds confidence in his comrades, cherishes the lives he protects, and beholds honor and empathy when its needed most. Yuria and Rin are so steadfast and compassionate, I adore them.

It's honestly an insane experience getting to discover some of the most classic manga memes within theses panels; the onomatopoeia is incredible and I truly had no idea there were that many ways a man could die.

Here's some of the radass panels that I adore. I'll be watching the '87 movie soon!

Berserk

I mean, what can I say that hasn't already been said? It's glorious, it's revolting, it breaks m heart yet fills me with courage. I've never been so sick to my stomach then when readign this--I'd bring the ndelux hardcover to the gym to read on the treadmill. The artwork is ridiculous in its delicacy and brutality.

I of course love Guts, but not in way most men do. He is so vulnerable and yet wants to be a better person when it comes to his companions. He's so willing to trust the new troupe and it's fantastic evolution on his behalf. Rickert is the best character outside of Judeo, and I'll always love Luca and Erika.

My only complaint is I missed Casa the whole damn time--we only get her back in the last chunk of the most recent volume and I will accept no other finale then her cleaving Griffith in two.

Komi Can't Communicate

Gosh, this was worth every chapter. I'm so serious, all 500 of them. I have been completely stretched to my thinnest with life and there was no better way to wind down than to pick up the next volume from my library.

Komi, Rumi, Tadano, all these kids are sweet, curious, and connective--it was a small window into the few most of high school where everone genuinly cared about one another thant often is clouded by our memories of the bad times and experiences. Komi, though not labelled and an of course falling short to some stereotypes, really opened my eyes to a lens of how in high school you can include the autistic kid or the nervous kid.

The effort her friends, especially Tadano, put into making her feel considered inspires so many other teens in this stories to do the same. And to have this pan over the entirety of her high school experience makes this story an excellent slow burn--sometimes the most exiting thing you do on a rainy Thursday is play desktop games. It was very cool seeing all the possible trips and festivities that many kids won't get to experience because of COVID, too.

Dragonflies & Damselflies: A Natural History (Paulson; 2019)

What a dazzling contribution to the Odonata community! This is the second comprehensive taxon book I have read on the subject and I am stunned by the photography. The writing is engaging, dynamic, and lighthearted. Truly a great Spring evening thing to read on your porch.

• 7/18 - 9/18: Applications

• 9/18 - 9/21: Pairings sent

• 9/21: Pairings sent; check-in dates (there will be 4!) posted

• 9/28: all non-confirmed DROPPED. Dropped informed of such and pairings remade (as needed)

• 9/28 - 12/14: Gift making period

• 12/14 - 12/31: Gift Posting period; participants will post on their creations on their chosen date

• 12/21: Pinch-hitters are released of pinch-obligations; emergency pinches can be handled by GP as needed

Wasps: The Astonishing Diversity of a Misunderstood Insect (Eaton; 2021)

This was such a delightful contribution to insect literature. I am incredibly fond of wasps and appreciate the lengths the author and photographer went to bring about some justice on the taxon's behalf. The layout is dynamic and the use of illustrations and photography is so vibrant.

will the gift exchange require using root this year? this would prevent me from participating as i refuse to make new accounts for single events

As I have stated previously, I will use my limited free time to run both a Discord and Root server. I will not jeopardize any individual's privacy, especially our most vulnerable community members.

Updates will occur on Root and Discord servers until Discord revists their heinous biometrics system--if they enact the facial ID policy they test-ran in March '26, we will switch and I will teach everyone how to use the alternative route. This is a contingency plan.

I apologise for the inconvenience that our digital world is continuously throwing on us. My goal as a mod is to keep everyone safe and if switching to Root becomes the best option, so be it.

We're living in a world where tracking someone is dangerously easy. I will not have my event filter into that.

I found Modest Heroes at my library and thought it was an excellant little treat. I loved how different each story was from each other yet still could fit into the same little town in different spaces. The allergens vinette broke me into to tears.

The Irish Folklore Trilogy movies (2008-2020)

So I'm on this very small journey to reconnect with my other half of culture and ancestry--I am Irish, though didn't grow up celebrating that ancestry, but now as an adult I am trying to.

I loved Secret of the Kells, so I hunted down at my library a copy that had that (for a rewatch), along with Song of the Sea and Wolfwalkers.

I knew of selkies through myths communities, so it was very endearing to see them in their original world. I am obsessed with the color palettes and character designs--I'm actually tearing up just thinking about it. There are lullabies in here that I wish I grew up with. I think if you're someone who is grieving, Song of The Sea, will warm your heart.

Regarding Wolfwalkers, it is my favorite of the trilogy. I knew it would break my heart, especially since I have worked in wolf conservation before, which is a devastating experience. The violence of imperialism our English characters bring back upon the Irish community is painful to watch--I adore Robyn and Mebh and how similar they are at heart. I sobbed through most of this movie; the colors are like a warm hug and soundtrack and score bring me to tears.

To say these trilogy is beautiful just isn't enough. It is a masterpiece of grieve, longing, and love. You can tell the people involved poured their hearts into this.

It took forever but I sat down and finally watched Kubo and the Two Strings!

It is lovingly reminiscent to because the orchestra that scored most of it was an childhood obsession of mine; I will always weeped for stop-motion animation, the poise and meticulous choice dedication is simply beautiful. Kubo is a kid I wish I grew up looking to for strength.
