It is with great pleasure that I would like to announce the launch of my nonprofit social enterprise, FormatAide.
I have found myself driven to create FormatAide as a means of addressing the economic devastation in my home country, Haiti. After the 7.0 earthquake hit Haiti, I witnessed and lived among thousands of destroyed homes, businesses, and hopes. Two hundred thousand dead, millions left with nothing. Through this, I came to understand the crucial role that small businesses play in Haitian life. And it became clear to me that independent sustainable business skills will play a critical role in the survival of many small to medium sized business leaders. I have therefore established FormatAide in order to provide small business owners in Haiti with the skills, tools and support they will need to become independent, self-sustaining and successful.
How You Can Help
To raise the funding needed to implement this training program, FormatAide is launching a crowdfunding campaign through www.Indiegogo.com starting on Friday November 22, 2013.
KoreBiznis is a pilot program that FormatAide will implement to provide the skills, insight, and assistance needed by the small medium sized entrepreneurs to successfully run their businesses. KoreBiznis is also a combination of two Haitian Creole words that means support (kore) to business (biznis). KoreBiznis seeks to promote an action oriented model that provides resources that can be used immediately at the speed of different type of small to medium sized businesses. KoreBiznis wants to bring business training to small business leaders while their businesses are still operating and build a network that connects small medium business entrepreneurs to share successes, best practices, and overcome challenges while finding partners, vendors and grab opportunities. KoreBiznis is uniquely positioned to train thousands of Haitian business men and women to improve their capacity and efficiency in managing their businesses in a sustainable way. A Celeb-Backed Apparel Factory in Haiti Goes High-End
Workers at IRII are trained in multiple skills, increasing their employability
When apparel brand Boxercraft was searching for a new supplier for its T-shirts and tank tops earlier this year, it didn’t turn to factories that crank out millions on the cheap. Instead, the 120-employee business, based near Atlanta, chose Industrial Revolution II, a garment manufacturer in Haiti. What clinched the deal was more than IRII’s competitive prices and low importing costs: It was the venture’s promise to train unemployed Haitians, pay them more than the minimum wage, and donate half its profits to social programs. Shoppers are “feeling responsible for the actual employee that is making the products that everyone is wearing today,” says Boxercraft Chief Executive Officer Shelley Foland, noting that the garment complex collapse that killed 1,100 workers in Bangladesh this spring has brought renewed focus on the dismal conditions in some factories. Foland wants IRII eventually to produce about 40 percent of the millions of tops and bottoms Boxercraft sells annually through wholesalers and retailers in college bookstores and resorts.
