“I can’t focus on two different things!” Lando yelled, slamming his hands down onto the table as Y/n flinched, almost cowering undershot gaze.
“You’re ridiculously needy, I can’t deal with this much as well as my racing!”
Y/n had never seen Lando so…frustrated. And wild.
His cheeks were bright red, eyes blazing and hands clenched, curses and insults spilling from his lips, quicker than he could even register them.
“Every fucking time- every time I finish a race, you’re always there! You’re always so needy and need so much attention, I can’t-,” Lando paused.
“I can’t date someone like you,”.
.🪻.🪻.🪻.🪻.
That had been a month ago, and it had been hard for Y/n.
She had truly, really loved Lando, all for it to be crushed in one fleeting moment, a single instance of frustration.
He hadn’t even given her a chance to explain anything, or to change.
Just like that. It was all gone.
But with the help of friends and family, Y/n had been working towards recovering - and well. She’d gone from bursting into tears at anything remotely orange - to not even flinching anymore.
“So, how’s shit goin’ down?” her cousin, Arlo, sat opposite her as she cut her steak.
“Alright,” she said, “been working on some art and whatever…painting’s good for the mind,”
“So they say,” Arlo spoke, his metal cutlery clinking in his hand.
The restaurant was warm, the chatter lively, the atmosphere buzzing with conversation. Y/n had actually started to enjoy herself again, slowly but surely.
And then, just as she picked up her glass of wine - she felt it.
A stare.
Her stomach twisted, instinctively recognizing it. Like she could just feel his gaze burning into her from across the room. Lando.
Her head snapped up and sure enough - there he was. Frozen by the entrance, his sea-glass eyes wide, his hand gripping his phone like he’d seen a ghost.
He wasn’t moving. He wasn’t talking. He was just staring. At her. And then his gaze flickered to Arlo.
A man. Sitting across from her. Laughing. Making her smile. Lando felt his throat close up. No. No, no, no.
He couldn't breathe, his palms going clammy as his stomach twisted painfully. She was on a date. She'd moved on. And it was his fault.
His mouth was dry. God, he thought he was going to be sick. His friends were already sliding into the booth, but Lando? He just stood there, eyes fixed on Y/n and her new man.
His fists clenched.
"I can't date someone like you,”
The words from their breakup ricocheted through his brain like bullets. Over and over and over. His own voice, spitting cruel words he hadn't even meant.
And now? She was gone. She was over him. And she looked happy.
His stomach sank. He needed air.
.🪻.🪻.🪻.🪻.
It was 3:07 AM when the first loud bang came against her door.
Y/n shot up from bed, heart hammering, confusion clouding her mind. What the fuck?
Another bang. And another. Desperate. Frantic.
Her stomach twisted. She grabbed her phone, eyes still adjusting to the dark, and stumbled toward the door.
The banging was getting louder. Violent. Like whoever was on the other side would break it down if she didn’t open it.
Her hand shook as she unlocked the door, wrenching it open-
And there he was.
Lando Norris.
Soaked to the fucking bone from the rain. Hair a mess. Eyes bloodshot. Clothes disheveled. But the most horrifying part?
The look on his face.
He looked destroyed. Like something had hollowed him out from the inside, ripped his heart out of his chest, and left him on the ground.
“Y/n,” he choked, his voice breaking immediately upon seeing her. His chest was heaving, his lips parted like he’d been running.
“Lando…?” she could barely get the word out, eyes flicking behind him, expecting to see someone else. “What-What the fuck are you doing here?”
Lando took a staggering step forward, his hands shaking like a fucking addict. “Please. Please- I need to talk to you. I need- I need you,”
Her stomach plummeted. No. No, no, no, no.
“Go home, Lando,” she said, forcing steel into her voice, gripping the door like it was the only thing keeping her upright. “It’s three in the morning. You don’t get to just-,”
“I fucked up,” Lando blurted out, his voice cracking so harshly it physically hurt her to hear it. His eyes were wild. Pleading. His hands shaking like he was on the verge of falling apart. “I fucked up so bad, Y/n. Please-Please just listen to me,”
Her jaw clenched. “Lando, you broke up with me. You said I was-,”
“I know what I said!” he practically yelled, his voice raw. Desperate. His hair was sticking to his forehead from the rain, his hoodie drenched. His eyes were already glossy. “I know what I said and I was fucking wrong. I was so fucking wrong, Y/n,”
Her throat tightened.
“I was scared. I was fucking terrified because-because I couldn’t handle how much I loved you,” his voice cracked, tears flooding his waterline, his whole body physically trembling.
“And I-I thought if I pushed you away, it would hurt less than losing you. But I lost you anyway, didn’t I?”
Her heart physically ached.
“And then I saw you today,” his voice broke. “I saw you at lunch with him. And you looked so happy. You looked- you looked like you were fucking over me and I-I couldn’t breathe.”
Y/n blinked, her mouth opening. “Wait-what?”
“And I realized it then. I realized I’d rather fucking die than watch you love someone else. Because you - fuck - you’re it for me. You always were,”
Her chest caved in. “Lando-,”
“And I know I fucked it up. I know I did, Y/n. I was a fucking coward, I ran because I thought you deserved better than me,” his voice cracked into a sob, his hands gripping his hair like he wanted to tear it out.
“But I can’t do this anymore. I can’t sleep. I can’t think. I can’t fucking breathe without you,”
Tears burned her eyes. “You don’t get to do this-,”
“I know, I know I don’t,” he stumbled forward, falling onto his knees.
Her mouth parted. Oh my god.
He was literally on his fucking knees. In the pouring rain. At 3 AM.
“I know I don’t deserve you back,” his voice shook like he was on the verge of breaking completely. “But please. Please just-just tell me you don’t love me anymore and I’ll leave. I swear to god, I’ll leave.”
Her entire world tilted.
“But if you do. If even one fucking part of you still loves me,” his voice broke, his forehead practically dropping to her doorstep. “Please. Please just-just let me love you again. I swear I’ll do it right this time,”
Tears streamed down his face. His entire body was trembling. The weight of his own mistake was crushing him.
Y/n’s throat closed. Her vision blurred. Oh my god.
“Please,” he begged, his voice wrecked. “I’m fucking begging you, Y/n,”
She choked.
Her voice cracked when she finally whispered, “You’re a fucking idiot, Lando,”
His head snapped up. “W-What
She didn’t answer. Instead, she grabbed his soaking wet hoodie and dragged him into a desperate, bruising kiss.
And Lando?
He fucking collapsed into it. Like his body just gave out. His hands clawed at her waist, his mouth devouring hers like he was a drowning man finally tasting oxygen.
He sobbed into the kiss. Literally sobbed. His hands fisting into her hair, his knees still on the ground like he couldn’t even stand up properly.
“Don’t-Don’t you ever do that again,” Y/n choked, her forehead pressing against his.
“I won’t,” Lando gasped, his chest heaving, tears pouring down his face. “I swear to god, I won’t. I can’t-I can’t lose you again.”
“You won’t,” she whispered, gripping his jaw so tightly his stubble scratched her fingers.
And he just broke.
Fully.
He just clung to her like a child. His entire body shaking as sobs wrecked through his chest, his face buried in her neck, his fingers tangled in her hair.
“I love you,” he cried. “I fucking love you so much, Y/n. I’m so sorry. I’m so fucking sorry.”
She just held him.
And for the first time in a month, Lando breathed again.
“…That was my cousin by the way,”
“I…fuck off,” Lando groaned, covering his face as she pulled him inside.
