I hate the concept of "deserves to win" in competitive sports. If you didn't win, you didn't deserve to win. The sport owes you nothing

My heart is broken, a book has broken me. A BOOK!! I have NEVER felt heartbreak like this.
i’m kinda tired of the way hamilton gets hate that literally no other amrev documentary/show/musical/whatever gets.
like i understand WHY it gets thrown into the spotlight constantly. of course it does, it’s the most mainstream, most culturally visible piece of media about the american revolution right now. but because of that people keep comparing it to things that were trying to do completely different jobs in the first place, and that really bums me out and makes me less likely to engage with anything new tbh.
“_ represents the evils of slavery better than hamilton!” i actually agree with that a lot of the time. but also representing the evils of slavery has literally never been the point of the musical. nor has dissecting the hypocrisy of the founding fathers as a whole. those things are referenced only insofar as they shape hamilton’s life and the world he’s moving through. they’re background forces in his story, not the thesis statement of the show.
and even then it has many inaccuracies, because it’s not trying to be a documentary. lin was taking MASSIVE artistic liberties from the start because he was telling a story first and doing history second (or third). like if you go in expecting a rigorous, systems-level exploration of slavery, abolition, and founding-era contradictions...you’re expecting something the musical never set out to be.
criticize it for what it is trying to do, sure. but comparing it to documentaries or historical dramas whose entire mission is to center slavery or deconstruct the founders feels like grading a fish on how well it climbs a tree. like there is SO much you could criticize about hamilton if you actually engage with the text it’s presenting instead of the text you wish it was presenting.
lin absolutely did that thing where he wanted to have his cake and eat it too. he wanted hamilton to be flawed, but he spotlighted the flaws in a way that sometimes flattened everything else about him. the show hammers the ambition, the ego, the self-destruction, the infidelity and bad politics. but it glosses over how intensely family-oriented he actually was. we get philip (for obvious narrative reasons) but where are the rest of the kids? where are the letters to his father? his brother? the childhood friends he kept up with? his deep bond with peggy? that omission changes the emotional framing of his character A LOT.
and THAT is interesting, real criticism. because it’s about adaptation choices. what do you cut, what do you heighten, what thesis are you building through those decisions?
but instead people jump straight to “it doesn’t center slavery enough” or “it doesn’t fully condemn the founders.”
idk. i just feel like the discourse would be way more productive if people stopped acting like hamilton was supposed to be the definitive moral or historical text on the american revolution in the first place.
