once you learn about evolution you'll get so emotional about dinosaurs. like. they lived in an entirely different world than we do but they were here and one day life will live in an entirely different world than we do but we'll still have been here. we are so small in the grand scheme of things. everything is so small in the grand scheme of things. 4.1 billion years of life and we all barely scratch the surface of it and yet we've left our marks. 4.1 billion years ago and life left its mark in the rocks. 250 million years ago and dinosaurs walked the earth and we know they did because they left their fossils behind. do you ever think about just how long 250 million years is? and yet so many of them can be seen in the animals we know today. they're gone but in so many ways they're still here.

on the topic of disabled characters, though, i think a LOT of artists give characters mobility aids that their character wouldn't actually benefit from using.

i'm sort of having a mild brain fog moment rn so i can't fully articulate what i'm on about, but i think a lot of able-bodied artists view things like canes and crutches as interchangeable. and they often don't know enough about the wide range of mobility aids to make an informed decision about what their character might actually use based on their disability

i also think that aids like walkers and rollators are sort of viewed as "cringe" on some level, and many people view them to be "just for old people," so many artists will opt for giving a character who has full-body pain and fatigue a cane (which, in many cases, can potentially WORSEN full-body pain) instead. and a lot of people don't realize that most wheelchair users are able to walk, so they don't consider it an option for characters with chronic pain

idk it's kind of frustrating. i've genuinely never, ever seen a character that uses a rollator before. not once. i cannot name a single one. i know of multiple ocs who are described to have full-body pain, dizziness, and fatigue that are drawn as cane users and are never shown with wheelchairs or walkers, though

it's also sort of sad? i've been diagnosed since i was twelve years old, and i only heard of rollators LAST YEAR. and that was only because i saw one irl and immediately asked what it was. i wonder how many disabled people out there don't even know it's an option solely because they're completely underrepresented online and in media

if you're a creative with a disabled oc, PLEASEEE check out this link. it's a very nice and detailed guide for telling which mobility aids suit someone's needs best. it's incredibly important to make the right choice for your character! mobility aids tell you a LOT about someone's lived experience. picking the right one will communicate to your audience #1 what your character goes through #2 that you UNDERSTAND what your character goes through!

tendonitis + life update #2!!!

hi everyone - Phoenix here, and I'm going to give you a little update on where I've been, what I've been up to and my tendonitis and why you guys haven't heard from me that much. so first off I'm using voice to text to dictate all this out. I'm speaking into my phone into what's that message and then I'm gonna copy paste that format it and then post it on tumblr on my computer. it's all in capital letters which, if you know me, you know that that is not at all my style and I might just be bothered enough to change it (spoiler: im not </3)

second of all, i am honestly doing fine. i haven't really been doing much productively and it's honestly been really getting my mood down. but most of all i just miss talking to people because most my friends are online and not being able to talk to them in the way that I usually do (which is over text) has been really difficult and I really miss you guys and i miss just having normal conversations where i'm not bringing up my wrist every five seconds

anyway about my tendonitis... a little bit more information on that: i went to the GP on Friday which, if you didn't know, that's a place you can go to in the UK to get medical treatment - it's kind of like the first point of call for any health problem. every town has at least one GP and they basically refer you to the right kinds of people. i saw a physiotherapist at my GP (which stands for general practitioner if you didn't know) and she diagnosed me with ulna tendonitis

science lesson: basically. you have two bones in your forearm. the one on top - the one closest to your thumb - is the radia, and the one underneath - the one closest to your pinky finger - is the ulna. so my injury is along the tendon that joins the all the muscles on the bottom half of my forearm to the bones. tendonitis is information of the ligaments and that means that your tendon (a thing that joins muscle to bone) basically gets really inflamed usually from overuse. in my case, i haven't injured it; the pain just randomly started and i'm pretty sure it's a repetitive strain injury. I thought it was because I type too much (which... is true). i do type a lot, but if that were the case wouldn't I have tendonitis in both my wrists? so maybe my right wrist is just used a little bit more than my left, maybe it's just bad luck, idk

either way I think the combination of typing drawing scrolling and just really doing everything with my right wrist has really impacted it, and obviously I will be taking a bit of a step back this summer holiday - which really sucks because I had so many creative projects that I wanted to finish, so many fanfic ideas that I wanted to finish and have written before I got into year 13 and before I stopped having the time to dedicate to my writing. this is all taken a pretty massive toll on my mental health this week - I don't normally cry and I've cried (like. full on sobbing) for 45 minutes this week, and another time where I was pretty damn close - which, if you don't know me in person, that is extremely extremely unusual for me. i'm an incredibly emotional person but even then I don't normally cry. so yeah this is pretty bad.

i don't want you to worry about me though; there is a lot I can do in the meantime. i have been spending some lovely time reading books. ive watched a lot of youtube (more than I care to admit really). i have been exercising my left hand to make sure that that hand doesn't get tendonitis from how much i use it now. i have a very satisfying stress ball, i've been doing some exercises on that. I've also been doing some exercises on some hair bands, just to make sure my left hand stays nice and strong. i have been doing some piano just on my left hand, im maybe going to do some violin. I'm gonna get some people to dictate for me, I'm going to get a speech to text software on my laptop, and hopefully this will all just make my life a lot easier and manageable. and while I don't like speaking loud what I'd usually type, because typing silently when no one knows what you're saying has so much more privacy (and I am pretty big on my privacy), it is so much better than nothing and three days ago I really thought that I was gonna waste this entire summer. but there is always a way forward

anyways you're probably realising that when I'm just talking without typing I am a massive rambler... XD i think I've been talking for about three minutes straight. this was edited so you guys aren't confused lol :')

anyway I promise I am done now I miss you guys and I love you all and as usual you can you can suggest whatever activities you like for me to do one handed so im not bored lol :') like I said I do have books to read I do have research to read I do have things that I can do and I can type left handed but it's just extremely tiring and slow and for someone with ADHD who's brain moves a million miles a minute, it's really hard to be so constrained in the way that I communicate - but I am coping, I am really. and i appreciate every single one of you who's been so so kind to me this past week

and if you're an artist or someone who uses their hands a lot, please be careful. take rest breaks. do exercises on your hands. ice them if they feel sore. this is probably one of the worst things i've dealt with this year and i want you guys to take this as a warning to look after your body please! i dont mean to scare you but please be careful

hey i saw ur ask abt tendonitis, wanted to rec ktape if ur able to get some. its been super helpful to me as someone with chronic disabilities, even just putting a single piece of tape on my wrist has made a HUGE impact in making it safer for me to do things.

thanks SOOO much, i do have some (not on me sadly) - i'm planning on 5 days of strict hand rest w plenty of painkillers and ice packs, and then i'm hopefully gonna start moving it again w kt tape and my other wrist braces🤞🤞🤞 lots of reading books in the meantime!! is there anything u know of that might make tendonitis worse?

where have i been?

so i have been..... not doing much fandom wise, art wise, or even posting much of anything at all :( and while i know i dont owe anyone that, i've missed sharing my ideas and creations with people. i love all 16 of you in my inbox with headcanon and fic requests and i promise i'll get to them as soon as i can.

last week i met one of my closest online friends irl. and while this was one of the biggest joys of my whole life (not even exaggerating), it has otherwise been a really bad two weeks. i had a friend of 5 years dump and block me. i had huuuge insect bites which caused me lots of anxiety. ive had a paranoia/anxiety/something bad flare today which was a terrifying 30 minutes. i have hardly been sleeping well. and the biggest thing being, my right wrist randomly started hurting on saturday and hasn't since stopped. it's so frustrating doing everything with my non dominant hand when im so unused to it. i miss drawing and playing instruments. i can't even write or type easily.

so i've been in a bad depressive mood for a while. i've been so worried about my wrist and my future. i know i'm extremely adaptable, but i'm also so impatient. my brain moves a million miles an hour and so do my hands. i hate that i can't express myself or talk to my friends online. to my friends, if i'm quiet or "expressionless" for the next few weeks, that's why, i love you, and i miss you terribly 🫶

i'm frustrated so so so much. there's so much i wanted to do this summer, so much art i wanted to make and stories i wanted to write before i don't have time for that in year 13. ive been keeping my wrist in a brace/splint that feels horrible on my sensory issues and its exhausting to wear it for days on end. i honestly haven't been doing well. i had to call childline (uk helpline; 0800 1111 if you're interested) and cried to the counsellor for 45 minutes straight :') this post took ages to type cos im typing on my non dominant hand and it's tear-jerkingly frustrating. i've cried more this week than i have the rest of the year.

and i don't want you guys (my lovely friends) to feel like there's nothing you can do to help. i'm brainstorming ideas/activities to do one handed, especially with my non dominant hand, so any suggestions are greatly welcomed! in fact, please do send in suggestions - comment, inbox, dm, i don't mind! if u don't have any ideas, that's ofc fine!! i'm also welcoming pet pictures, positivity messages, jwcc/jwct headcanons/posts, etc

(i will say though, please don't ask me for fics/hcs right now /nm. i won't be able to do them for a while and i may feel overwhelmed)

also good things are, quite literally, on the horizon! i'm seeing a friend tomorrow and i'm also going to a doctor to see what the problem might be. so not all is doom and gloom :')
