You know my favorite bits in period dramas are the ones where the heroine is “not like other girls” and chooses not to wear a corset because let’s be real, no inteligent woman in a period drama setting would do that.
And then you can tell it was written by someone without a chest because next thing you know, they’ll be running off across a field or something.
Like girl, you just took off the only breast support you had, and now you’re sprinting across a field?? How is this not an issue??
And then they’re like “I’m a woman of science” but clearly no, because any woman who knows anything about weight distribution wouldn’t choose to fling off their corset whilst still wearing a poofy skirt. Like it’s there for a reason. It distributes the weight and keeps your 50 lbs of skirts from digging into your bare skin. And I cannot stress this strongly enough, IT SUPPORTS THE BUST. WHAT ARE YOU DOING. I’ll make an exception if they’re dressing as a man or have anything gender going on, but otherwise, WHAT ARE YOU DOING??
And then they say it’s because they’re painful or that they’re “instruments of the patriarchy”, except no they fucking weren’t, men wore corsets too, they were literally just bust support and historical corsets didn’t hurt, because they were made to fit your body, and they actually molded to fit it more the more you wore them. I know, I have multiple.
And if you think one couldn’t breathe, yes you could, people wore corset like garments for like 500 years, you think they would wear them if they couldn’t breathe? And no they didn’t lace them tightly except for special occasions and that was only a few people. In fact for most of history, it was physically impossible to lace boned garments any tighter then they were supposed to go because metal eyelets weren’t invented yet. You achieved the small waist look by padding out your hips and maybe your chest and sleeves creating an optical illusion
I think about this a lot. As someone who had a) worked at a living history museum with a historical dress maker, b) owns multiple corsets, c) makes corsets (both modern and historical), and d) has a large chest, it drives me nuts when people say that corsets are evil. They’re not. They provide excellent back and chest support, they are excellent for your posture, and they can be very comfortable. They’re not evil, at least no more so than the modern day garments worn for chest support. Plus, they distribute the weight across the back rather than putting it all on the shoulders.
Between making my own clothing and costumes and having a woman who sells me high quality, natural fabrics for $5 per yard, I am so spoiled when it comes to clothing. What do you mean this is polyester? What do you mean you’re using plastic boning in your corset tops? What do you mean you’re using plastic leather? If *I* were to make this, it would be using silk and cotton and wool and spiral steel boning and real leather. It’s wild how spoiled I am now and I wish companies used actual natural fabrics.
I just finished the worst term at university I have ever had. Everything that could have gone wrong feels like it went wrong, but it’s over. I’m done. I survived. I have over 3.5 months of summer. I get to do research and make crafts and take care of myself. I think I’m going to be ok.
If you are getting this, I care about you!
Thank you so much. I care about you, too and I hope your day is going well and you have an excellent weekend.
Meet the outer wilds ventures crew!! I dehelmeted them ::)

I love this so much.
I think this is my favorite picture on the entire internet.
it's hilarious how if you do any amount of research into life or death melee combat the prevailing themes that emerge are that
you're gonna get tired very quickly
tired leads to injured, injured leads to tired, tired leads to—
you're not gonna be as composed as you expect
humans are more fragile than you think and also more durable than you think. both are true and neither stop them from dying of an infection later (DO NOT GET BITTEN)
DO NOT GET STABBED (generally good life advice)
DO GET A SPEAR
knights are faster than you think
Other favorites from history:
Humans are very good at *pretending* to fight each other in hopes that the generals way in the back are buying it so nobody has to get stabbed.
Most of the dying only happened after a side broke and tried to run, because then the rich assholes on horseback got to start running them down.
As someone who does HEMA (historical european martial arts) if I may, I would like to add some observations for when people *do* fight:
Without armor, a fight can be over in under a minute
With armor, the fights generally last longer and the victory often goes to whomever wrestles the other to the ground and pulls out a knife first
Armor is more protective than shown in media, especially video games
Long swords and great swords are much faster and more nimble than you think they are. Also, swords in general are lighter than you think they are. My longsword is about 3 lbs
Never underestimate the fighting power of Some Guy with a big stick
Swords are good. Polearms are generally better, especially in a military setting. They are less expensive to make and take less time to learn how to use. Also, in a battle, range is your friend
Stamina, not strength, is often more important in a fight
If all else fails, throw sand into their eyes, stab them, and run away
Doreen Ketchens
Clarinetist
CHECK!!!
she be on royal street and she is so good every time
I don’t know how impressive this is to the average person, but I’ve been playing clarinet for about 10 years and I am nowhere NEAR that good. I have never heard anybody before who is that good. The speed of the notes. The quality of the sound. The register changes. THE LENGTH OF THE LONG NOTE OH MY GOD IT IS SO HARD TO HOLD A NOTE THAT HIGH FOR THAT LONG. This is genuinely one of the most impressive things I have seen in my entire life and I watched the entire video just completely in awe of this clarinetist. Holy shit I cannot even put into words how amazing of a clarinetist this person is.
I am a TA for a cooking class at my university and today was the final. I was working for 13 hours and I just want to not exist anymore. I’m so tired.
That is such a creature and I don’t know which emotion this shows but I feel it on a deep and fundamental level.
Cursed sword that's a normal sword with "fuck" written on it
This is so funny to me because someone in my historical fencing group actually has a longsword with “fuck” written on one side in sharpie and “bitch” on the other side. When I asked him why, he said it’s to intimidate his opponents in a sparring match. Because of the writing, it is the most beautiful blade I’ve ever seen.
Item: Sword that Says Fuck and Bitch (longsword, cursed)
Upon the wielder holding the sword up, the opponent must make a constitution saving throw or else take 1d4 psychic damage and has disadvantage on their next attack from looking at the writing on the blade. The wielder, whenever they fail a swing, must make a constitution saving throw or take 1d4 psychic damage from being called a bitch by their own sword.
When I was like 14, I remember joking to my friends that I should go as my future self for Halloween. That costume would just be me with messy hair, dark circles under my eyes, and chalk dust on my clothes. I wish I could go back and tell past me how close my “costume idea” would be to reality.
I think it's time for a new Tumblr hit Charles Oberonn character.
Point-Man. He's a badass mercenary taking on the forces of evil. Always the first to the front and the one making the sacrifices for his team.
He's also a literal 0-dimensional point.
His comrade, best-friend, and husband, who builds all of his gear and gadgets, is called Line-Man.
He's a litetal 1-dimensional line.
The third member of the team and the pilot that flies them to where they need to be, is called Plane-Man.
I think you get the joke by now.
At last, we meet the heroes of the geometry wars
Just you wait until Space-Man shows up.
Comic book heroes in the Flatland universe.
Me in high school: yeah physics and math have a crazy amount of overlap and, you know, in a lot of ways, they talk about the same thing.
Me now, a physics major asking a math major something: I'm sorry what the actual fuck did you just say? What are those words? Why are you speaking like this? Can't you just explain it with numbers?
Me, a math major talking to a physics major: I’m sorry, WHAT? You just hand-wave the math? You can’t do that!
Have you heard the phrase "general mathematical niceness" yet?
No, what’s that?
It's an assumption made in some physics theorems. Basically it's "this function doesn't have anything weird going on. It's in whatever Sobolev space would make sense, y'know?" I recall using the phrase in a seminar with a bunch of mathematicians and causing a small uproar.
I once heard someone justify math using “the hand-wave theorem” and needless to say the pure math people recognize many theorems but not that one.
hi! what's something you smiled about this week?
Definitely my friends. I'm sorry I took so long to respond.
