the puppetry in phm is just so fucking good dude. think abt how much improv there was. the dancing/mimicking scene when rocky and grace first met? that was improvised. that means that 5 people were so in sync with each other on this puppet that they were able to mimic ryan gosling in real time with no plan. bro. BRO. ouugghhhhh rocky puppeteers i love u

something i really liked about project hail mary is that Rocky and Grace are both equally out of their depth and about as competent as the other. theyre both the smart one. theyre both total dumbasses. neither knows whats going on. they both think the other is an idiot baby. they both admire the other's intelligence so much.

right so reportedly we got the karaoke scene in the movie because ryan gosling overheard sandra hüller singing to herself in some downtime on set and approached the directors to say "if we have her here and don't ask her to sing in the movie then we're insane," so the scene was hastily planned and recorded during the last day they had with that set; stratt grew up singing in an east german youth choir because hüller did, too. a fun meta textual wrinkle this adds is that gosling is also a singer but grace doesn't take a turn with the mic, so you can read the scene not just as stratt saying "I am a full human being, I just can't be for this project, you get to see it for two minutes before I turn it off again" but additionally "you could be doing this exact same thing but you aren't even willing to give us two minutes." his doomed work friend the trained choral singer, his fated bestie the being who communicates only through song, his world-saving probes named for the most famous musicians ever, his choir-based soundtrack underpinning all his actions, and his unwillingness to sing himself.

i do think the one thing the project hail mary novel has over the film adaptation is that when rocky boils himself alive in grace's atmosphere to save his life rather than be left alone again book grace is like "man what the hell was that for" and goes and boils himself right back for the exact same reasons. i just think it would settle a lot of discussions about their codependency and whether or not they're each other's equals to be reminded that they would literally light themselves on fire before being prepared to lose each other.

banging my head into a wall i love you ALIVE rocky!!!!!!! cool as fuck space alien rock crab spider whos so fucking smart and resilient and stubborn and doesnt give up!!!!!!!!! spent 46 years in space all alone and offered up 6 more of his own years just so his friend could survive!! and its that act of kindness that saved him and his planet. hes so bossy and so funny and kind and considerate and i just love him sososo much. what if you were sent on a mission expecting to come home and instead you watched all your crewmates die slowly around you while you alone were left standing, and you kept going? and it wasnt even a decision for you because youre the type of person to always keep going and im so fucking emotional i love him so fucking much i want to rip my heart out of my chest and give it to him oh my fucking god he deserves the world AND MORE i love you rocky 😭😭 i lvoe you so much 😭😭
