Okay, finished watching Love Between Fairy and Devil at 2:30 AM and then sobbed myself to sleep…  I’m really not good at expressing my feelings in words, it takes me time to properly describe it but… 

Most of all, it was a healing experience for me. I can’t even count how many of my ships got a very similar promising start only to end up:

- in a cycle of miscommunication that was no longer cute and overdone,

- never expressing their feelings/never got together,

- expressing their feelings but doubting if they are good for each other,

- getting together but for some reasons breaking up,

- one of them or both are dead with no chance of coming back from the dead,

- and especially with enemies-to-lovers trope, either the villain turns evil again and the hero refuses him/her or he/she sacrifices themselves with no chance of coming back from the dead. 

This is just illustrative but the most common crimes.

Love Between Fairy and Devil didn’t do it because they did it right. Their love was tragic and angsty and painful and they hurt each other and themselves more than you can count, no matter if willingly or unwillingly or under circumstances they had no power over.

But their miscommunication lasted just long enough to deliver the message and be cute.

They expressed their feelings and got together in the right moment and on the right time.

They never ever doubted the love they felt for the each other.

They might have broken up more than once but they still loved each other immensely and suffered because of it to the point that they eventually got back together.

Dongfang’s redemption from villainy was gradual, beautiful and he was given time to learn that the way he wanted to choose wasn’t the best one. He did mistakes and that was okay because he needed to learn. 

Both Orchid and Dongfang sacricifed themselves for each other but there was a way for them to get back - however seemingly impossible and long but what is 500 years for an Immortal… 

And that’s what counts to me the most.

Also adding one important thing about Orchid that I forgot earlier:

I love how Orchid went from this naive dreamer to a confident, crazy in love woman who was unwavering in her feelings. So many female characters across media are being downgraded to “romance is bad because it makes you less badass and independent” which is not true at all but the stupid dogma still prevails. With Orchid, it’s the opposite. Her love for Dongfang makes her stronger, makes her badass and makes her incredibly independent. And I was so happy to witness it.

Once again, it was a truly healing experience. I’m glad that something like that finally exists and there is still hope for good romance stories.

modern AU plot/summary: 

modern!DFQC meets modern!XLH by chance from a distance and the moment their eyes make contact- their past lives’ memories came rushing back to both of them as the moon supreme and the little orchid. modern!XLH smiles with recognition because she knows her da mutou and he returns a soft smile back because he knows his little flower demon. both of them are excited to meet each other in another life and they go on various dates not wasting a second together- walking a dog, making funny kissy faces, playing “guess who”, pointing out things that are exciting, ruffling/playing each other’s hairs, cuddling, and genuinely enjoying each other’s company. one late night- they stay out late and enjoy reconnecting their bodies under the stars. morning hits and modern!XLH wakes up first, letting modern!dfqc sleep in her lap. modern!dfqc eventually awakes- he strokes modern!XLH’s face gently because he realizes how lucky he is to have another life with his one true love.  modern!XLH writes on modern!DFQC’s palm, “I love you forever and more” and DFQC writes back on her palm: “I love you in this life and the next.” then they both look at each other lovingly, knowing that they will enjoy this life together as one and will always find their way back to each other. the end.

DFQC's father suddenly being harsh on DFQC so he can help him shut off his feelings and master the hellfire faster (cause that's what he thought was best for the sake of the moon tribe)

DFQC suddenly being harsh on XLH so she can stop loving him faster (cause if she didn't stop she would face certain death cause of the bone orchid)

Both of them are using a similar method so they can save what's important to them but they're sacrificing different things. On the way, Former Moon Supreme sacrificed his son's feelings and his own life to save the people of the tribe. On the other hand, DFQC chose to save his loved one although that would mean he would have to find another way to unseal the 100,000 soldiers and the Moon Tribe could still be outnumbered by Shuiyuntian because of that.

Okay, so a lot of people have taken up this quote to comment on Love Between Fairy and Devil and I have THOUGHTS:

(spoilers for the entire show)

A hero would sacrifice you to save the world but a villain would sacrifice the world to save you.

Changheng is that first one. He puts his duty above his heart which is admirable if more than a bit sad (but he also puts his piety to his clearly corrupt brother above his heart, which is not, and he learns this lesson too late).

Ronghao is that second one and this makes him truly a monster. It is not beautiful, it's ugly and awful and no matter how satisfying it sounds to imagine that a villain would burn down the world for you, the reality of it is horrific.

(in fact, we even KNOW that because our universal reaction to the 'I will destroy your home and kill everyone you know for you' rather made us all slap our own foreheads at the sheer stupidity)

But Dongfang Qingcang and Xiao Lanhua? They're the third kind. The ones who would sacrifices themselves so that the one they love would not need to be the one who falls in their duty to save the world.

(at least by the end, in the beginning... there was the before mentioned stupidity)

First she does it for him (as well as for both her own people and his). Because if she had not he would have died.

In fact this is exactly what she tries to do again once she comes back.

And then he does it for her because he does not want her to sacrifice herself for him and the world a second time. And so he takes her place.

Really it's Xiao Lanhua who says it best herself.

I love all the people. I also love one person.

They do not place the world above their love for each other, but they also by the end have come to respect each other's sense of duty and loyalty and so she cannot hate him for his need to defend the Moon Tribe (or to seek vengeance even). And he does not try to whisk her away once he realizes that she plans to give her life to stop the Evil God Tai Sui.

They would not burn down the world for each other. But they would burn down themselves for each other without thought.
