INSIDE ISSUE 022 // RESERVE YOUR COPY TODAY! “Intrinsically human affairs and, one suspects, feelings which are deeply personal to Josh himself, are hidden in plain sight. The environment is a character. The decaying buildings are characters. The elements have layers of meaning. Fire might symbolise some struggle in life which is painful. Rising water levels might symbolise a sense of being overwhelmed, or of letting go, giving in to the weight of the world or the weight of the self. The forest can evoke a sense of being lost, alone and isolated. Though there are no human subjects, the subject is human: every square inch of every painting is infused with the essence of humanity and, perhaps, with aspects of Josh.” . “The NDP is really the only major federal political party in Canada…”
Everything in the Liberal world is Trump related. The first Trudeau ran the country into the ground now his son is there to make sure he finishes it off. Justin makes Canada look ridiculous on the world stage. Carbon tax is a really bad joke and only hurts Canadians. There is only 35 million Canadians, 350 million Americans, 1.4 billion Chinese and Canada puts a carbon tax and kills the economy. Your not going to save the world by taxing it.
Sigh.
Carbon Taxes do not hurt the economy.
Four provinces outperformed the rest, all while pricing carbon pollution
Carbon tax won’t harm economy, but climate change will: study
Carbon pricing won’t mess up Canada’s economy: experts
B.C. is proof that carbon pricing doesn’t hinder economic growth
You should also be aware that despite Canada’s low population we have one of the largest untapped oil reserves in the world and we export millions of barrels of it around the world. Population doesn’t matter. Carbon pollution does.
What the fuck is going on in Florida?????

So, to make a long sad, horrific story short: farms, big companies and suburbs have their run-off go into Lake Okeechobee- Florida’s largest fresh water lake. Okeechobee has a dike that is used to prevent flooding of surrounding areas (before the dike, water would flow through the smaller rivers down to south Florida which was basically all swamp). However, when the water rises to high, US Army Corps release the water. With how our waterways are now set up, they hit a saltwater river system (Caloosahatchee River and St. Lucie River). With fresh water, salt water and this runoff that contains nutrients, fertilizer and manure, it creates this algae which is toxic.
Thousands of sea life is being slaughtered because of it. They found dead manatees on my beach. They’ve found dead dolphin, squids, fish of many different variety, all washed up on our beautiful beaches.
It smells like death and is causing respiratory problems.
People have gone to the hospital because of this.
Our government is doing nothing because to do something, it would mean putting a stop to the run-offs and who causes the run-offs? Primarily major sugar farms.
Many people look at the dike as an issue, because it is damaged and needs repair. They have to let the water out at lower levels in order to keep the dike from breaking. However, the dike wasn’t installed until the 1960s and while there were smaller dikes previously, it wasn’t really a thing until the more southern parts of FL were being populated and developed. (Just to show how young Florida actually is- my town’s first buildings were built in the 1950s-60s).
They put the dike in place so that they could develop Southern Florida. The dike prevents flooding, but the run-offs are what is causing the contaminants.
Its a many tiered problem but the most important thing to realize is: the government is doing nothing to help AND sea-life, the environment and the citizens of these areas continue to suffer. We need to do something, so if you live in Florida, call your senators, call your reps and tell them this is bullshit and needs to be fixed.

If all goes well by the end of the calving season, the herd will have increased to 35.
Three new furry beasts are the first “made in Banff” bison calves to be born in the Banff National Park backcountry in more than 140 years.
Earlier in the year, when Parks Canada did some collaring, veterinarians checked out the bison and found that nine of the 10 females were pregnant.

I'm so infuriated by Alberta right now. Ram a pipeline through BC because whatever, who cares about first nations or salmon or climate change but then, like raging hypocrites, they decide to invest millions into green energy, green economics and infrastructure in their own province. Lord, sometimes. Don't get me wrong, I'm excited about what I've read so far because it's absolutely the right direction for Canada... but how bout not taking one step forward for every three steps backwards.
~~~~
Look Anon, I’d like it if they didn’t have to build the pipeline as much as anybody protesting it and for everyone to just rely on green energy instead of fossil fuels too. Unfortunately we’re not at a point where it’s feasible to make that switch yet as everything is so reliant on oil; therefore we need ways to transport it and, like it or not, pipelines are safer, more reliable, and less expensive than transporting it by truck or rail. There definitely needs to be more investment and work put into green energy so that we can make the switch, but until that’s something that can realistically be done pipelines are still going to have to get built
Nah, you’re wrong and your whole approach is wrong.
Stopping 1 oil pipeline ≠ stopping Canada’s entire oil industry.
All Environmentalists are calling for is for the oilsands growth to remain the same today as it is in 2030, instead of growing by 40%. Very few environmentalists in Canada are calling for an immediate shutdown of the oil industry. That’s not even the policy of the Green Party of Canada.
This is backed up by science. We cannot continue fossil fuel growth and prevent catastrophic climate change:
Most of Canada’s oilsands must stay in ground if world to limit global warming: report
We do not need to end Canada’s oil industry overnight, but we do need to freeze its rate of growth or the world will be doomed to a 2-5 degree warming future, which may just make the Earth uninhabitable in vast areas of the globe.
And this leaves out the whole issue of Indigenous Rights. How can anyone who claims to care about human rights and justice support an oil pipeline which will plow through unceded Indigenous territories?
‘It is our Standing Rock:’ First Nations announce legal actions against feds, Kinder Morgan
Kinder Morgan Pipeline Won’t Be Allowed Through First Nations Territories, Leaders Say
“We’re going to stand up for our water,” says B.C. chief challenging pipeline approval And that doesn’t even go into the immense risk this pipeline would bring to the Vancouver area:
Eco-tourism worth billions trumps value of Kinder Morgan project, new report argues
And it could outright kill an endangered subspecies of Killer Whale:
Big oil v orcas: Canadians fight pipeline that threatens killer whales on the brink
And look I get it, people are passionate about this. People’s jobs are on the line, but already in 2018 there are massive gains being made in renewable energy, and way more employment than in the oil industry:
2016 was the year solar panels finally became cheaper than fossil fuels. Just wait for 2017
Green energy sector jobs surpass total oil sands employment (2014)
US solar power employs more people than oil, coal and gas combined, report shows
Costa Rica to ban fossil fuels and become world’s first decarbonised society
Sweden on track to become fossil fuel free by 2040
The Dutch government confirms plan to ban new petrol and diesel cars by 2030 Germany produces enough renewable energy in six months to power country’s households for an entire year
Ireland becomes world’s first country to divest from fossil fuels
Maybe you’re not aware of this, but there’s already a pipeline running along the proposed route, they’re just putting another pipe beside it. Most of the First Nations communities along the way were also fine with it and had already made agreements about it until a few of them and the BC government started making a big stink over it
“Maybe you’re not aware of this, but there’s already a pipeline running along the proposed route“.
–
I know this, but guess what? When this pipeline was built First Nations had no legal right to use legal services or even vote. One of the First Nations on its route objected to the original pipeline being built but they had no power to stop it at the time:
“It is our Standing Rock,” said Coldwater Chief Lee Spahan. “The existing Kinder Morgan pipeline was built through our reserve and above our aquifer at a time when it was illegal for us to vote or hire a lawyer …The Crown’s decision to put our drinking water at risk…is profoundly troubling.”
Also the new pipeline will transport 3X the amount of oil. Its not just adding another pipeline its tripling the capacity of the system and will lead to a 7X increase of oil tanker traffic.
–
“Most of the First Nations communities along the way were also fine with it and had already made agreements about it until a few of them and the BC government started making a big stink over it“
–
This is actually 100% a lie.
41 out of 140 First Nations along the Pipeline route have an agreement with Kinder Morgan. An agreement does not equal support for the project.
85 First Nations along the Pipeline route have not signed agreements with Kinder Morgan. That’s about 61% of the total.
The B.C. Government is making a big stink over it because there are 300,000 jobs and a multibillion dollar industry which depend on there never being an oil spill on the coast.
A sobering new study finds that the world’s biggest industries burn through $7.3 trillion worth of free natural capital a year. And it’s the only reason they turn a profit.
Trucost’s third big finding is the coup de grace. Of the top 20 region-sectors ranked by environmental impacts, none would be profitable if environmental costs were fully integrated. Ponder that for a moment: None of the world’s top industrial sectors would be profitable if they were paying their full freight. Zero.
That amounts to an global industrial system built on sleight of hand. As Paul Hawken likes to put it, we are stealing the future, selling it in the present, and calling it GDP.
This gets back to what I was saying at the top. The notion of “externalities” is so technical, such an economist’s term. Got a few unfortunate side effects, so just move some numbers from Column A to Column B, right?
But the UNEP report makes clear that what’s going on today is more than a few accounting oversights here and there. The distance between today’s industrial systems and truly sustainable industrial systems — systems that do not spend down stored natural capital but instead integrate into current energy and material flows — is not one of degree, but one of kind. What’s needed is not just better accounting but a new global industrial system, a new way of providing for human wellbeing, and fast. That means a revolution.
Oil patch consultant Jessica Ernst alleges Alberta has intimidated landowners.
The Supreme Court of Canada said today that it will hear the landmark case of Jessica Ernst, which squarely challenges how the Alberta government has treated landowners and regulated hydraulic fracturing. The decision both stunned and exhilarated the 57-year-old Ernst. “I’ve always known my case was important for water and all Canadians, that’s why I am taking this legal stand,” said Ernst who lives in Rosebud, Alberta. “The court will now hear my appeal that provincial energy regulators not be legally immune from violating the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms when trying to intimidate citizens harmed by fracking,” added Ernst. Her stand against the industry and the Alberta government has made her a folk hero throughout North America and parts of Europe.
U.S. worried about Canada’s ability to respond to oil spills, records reveal
Newly released U.S. documents show American authorities are nervously eyeing Canadian proposals to triple the number of oil tanker voyages through the shared waters off B.C.’s coast, saying among themselves that Canadian standards to clean up a major spill are decades behind those of the U.S. and leave states vulnerable to environmental damage and costs. After the MV Marathassa spilled sticky, toxic bunker fuel into Vancouver’s harbour this month, Washington State officials noted in interviews with The Globe and Mail that the state’s oil-spill response regime was far advanced from Canada’s. One former maritime lawyer said if the U.S. Coast Guard ranked an eight or nine out of 10 worldwide, then Canada’s Coast Guard would rank a one or two. But the records obtained by The Globe under U.S. access-to-information laws show that American officials have been worried about Canada’s oil-response capabilities for years, dating back to Canada’s National Energy Board hearings into the proposed Northern Gateway pipeline and the proposed Kinder Morgan expansion project.
