Of course I picked up the 8th edition boxed set. Death Guard are my bag and them being designed by Maxime ‘Morback’ Pastourel also helped make that decision.
First out of the gate, painting wise is the Foetid Bloat Drone. It’s a fun model to paint, although I made the mistake of gluing the weapons on and that made it a pain in the backside to paint.
Like my other Death Guard I undercoated using Humbrol Beige Green, and used that throughout (along with VMC’s sort-of equivalent Pastel Green). The maggoty flesh is a mix of VMC Pastel Green & VMC Offwhite, with glazes made with Lahmian Medium and various GW shades.
The new things I tried this time were doing some rust with Vallejo Pigments Dark Red Ocre, and using AK Interactive’s Diorama products for the base, which turned out to do better achieving what I wanted than GW’s Textures, and were cheaper since it’s £9 for a 250ml pot of AK to £4.50 for 24ml.
All in all fun to paint up. Guess I should do the rest of the Death Guard now!
I redid the base on my Death Guard Contemptor. Annoyingly the brown on the base, Stirland Battlemire for the darker mud and Stirland Mud for the wet mud, got a bit washed out. Really pleased with it, though, those Stirland textures are ace, though I might try some of the other products on the market to see how they compare, especially AK Interactive’s Diorama/Terrain products.
I inked that Chaplain from today for Inktober. Inktober 11. #CROM #Inktober #inktober2016
fun with marines.
Will Kirkby draws a mean Deathwatch Space Marine.
“Of all the Space Marine Legions raised by the Emperor as part of his nascent Legiones Astartes, few had beginnings so glorious and yet ends as tragic and nightmarish as would befall the Death Guard. Once a byword for resilience and unshakable courage, whose warriors served the overthrow of alien tyrants and warlords on more than a hundred worlds, and at whose hands scores of xenos races met their destruction horror was to overtake them. The Death Guard were to become the very thing they once fought so tirelessly against: inhuman, unrecognizable and soulless monsters of the dark-the very stuff of nightmares.”
-Horus Heresy Book One: Betrayal
My 30k legion of choice, that I really should get on finishing building... *cough*
So guess who just preordered Space Hulk: Deathwing? Also, check that ex-Deathwatch Terminator.
If only I could paint white that well :D
I know I focus on 40k, but Cagn of Le Blog dé Kouzes, a group that includes current ‘Eavy Metal team member Maxime Pastourel aka Morbäck, unleashed some stunning Stormcast Eternals in a palette that seems entirely alien to GW’s house colours. but compliments the models, removing the plain ‘Space Marines in 2K’ feel.
I went to the Corehammer meetup at Foundry last Sunday - snapped (badly, with shitty potato iPhone) some fantastic bits of the Bryan Ansell collection that were on display in the cabinets. What amazed me was how much better these things look in real life compared to how they did back in the days of 1980s photographic and reproductive technology.

These miniatures make GW’s modern paint jobs seem anti-septic. There’s a life to these that’s missing in the cleanliness of the stuff you see in the front of Visions every month.
Absolutely love the work Iron Sleet are pulling together.
Finished my Castellax Battle Automata. Really enjoyed painting this, and I’m chuffed with how the checks came out. I based this in part on the old Rogue Trader Robots page, which I was in love with as a kid (and part of the reason I have a Vorax maniple to team with the Castellax).
Paints used :-
Armour: Humbrol Acrylic Beige-Green (spray & pot) Vallejo Model Color German Orange Vallejo Model Color Foundation White Metals: Coat D’Arms Brass Foundry Blackened Barrel Citadel Boltgun Metal
Shades: Citadel Agrax Earthshade Vallejo Wash Black Shade
I also added someglazes using Lahmian Medium mixed with Vallejo Model Color Intermediate Blue, Royal Purple and Fluorescent Orange to made the barrel of the Darkfire Cannon look a bit heat-worn (it sort of worked).
I’ve finally been getting back into painting, having not painted anything for about a year. The Kastelan is proving interesting, all those smooth surfaces, where the Castellax is a minefield of detail. I still prefer the Castellax. It’s painted to fit with my Death Guard & Vorax, so I’ll use some of what I’ve done with it for the remaining 2 Vorax I have to paint for the maniple.

SPACE MARINES 30th ANNIVERSARY by HarryOsborn-Art
Windsor & Newton Series 7 Brushes
I’ve been unhappy with Games Workshop brushes since they released their newest range. The quality has seemed to dip significantly and make my painting experience much less enjoyable.
For my birthday my girlfriend bought me this set of Windsor & Newton brushes with some brush conditioner to keep them nice too. I used them for the first time this week and I LOVE them. The sable brushes hold the paint nicely and have a bit more resistance so the paint goes where you want it to. I look forward to using these for all my miniatures from now on.
I switched to W&N Series 7 about 10 years ago. I think the price of them made me be way more careful than the Citadel brushes I had, but I quickly noticed a huge improvement in my painting with the way it held & applied paint... so good.
Now I can paint an entire figure with the size 1, instead of fiddling with multiple brushes :)
