Found in a cave in Western Cape of South Africa, this cave painting fits the description of the Dingonek almost perfectly. The first time that a photo of this cave painting was shared was in the book ‘Rock-Paintings in South Africa’ by George William and Dorothea Bleek, published in 1930. The Dingonek, a creature that is said to live in the Congo, is also known as the Jungle Walrus.

The creature in the painting has the same walrus tusks, scales and segmented tail (rumored to be similar to a scorpion’s stinger). The Dingonek is said to be quite aggressive and will kill anything that invades its territory. Legends say that the beast itself is anywhere from 40 to 50 feet in length. Because of their size, Dingoneks are said to be able to easily kill hippopotamuses and crocodiles.
