Exalted Secret Santa 2024 Complete!
Thank you once again for participating, friends. This was one of our larger years, and I'd been a little nervous going into it, but it turns out to have gone smoother than any year in recollection on my part, with everything posted before the due date and no need for pinch hitters. I know at least a few of you battled through illness and packed schedules to get your pieces in, and once again I'm grateful you chose to spend your time and energy with us.
We had several newcomers, and the fresh styles and energy are always so welcome. We also had many artists back from previous years; it's a joy to have you.
Whether you were new to the exchange, an old hand, or an observer, I hope you'll take the time to check out all the submissions and enjoy everyone's sick characters and great art.

Kingfisher is a Sidereal Chosen of Secrets. He's just got the one outfit. Feel free to design new stuff, though, within his color scheme (he's like a kingfisher, duh, a saturated cool deep base color, and maybe variations on the base, with small warm accents.) He likes asymmetrical clothes and showing some skin. You don't work for abs like that and then cover them up. You can check out my inspiration Pinterest board here:

If you'd like to do a combat scene, he practices a martial art that uses the sword or trident, called the Malachite Fangs of the Tide. I didn't do a mechanical writeup for it yet. Visually, think of sea snakes; it's fluttering and coiling, a thrashing ribbon, exploiting flexible weapons and striking with fingers like fangs.
Visual motifs: feathers, wings, the trident and star-disc. Contrast between skintight and drapey clothing; knotted cords.
His anima is a slowly expanding, many-petaled flower, like a lotus constantly opening. At the outer portions, the petals gradually become elongated and feather-like; they split at the margins and become elongated. It acts like ripples of something moving across water; every so often, a lotus opens at his Caste mark and stays in place while he moves past it.
I'd prefer not to see any injury or horror stuff. Demons being weird but not gory/violent are fine. Please notice that all these characters are dark-skinned, not European light.
As tradition, my Rook's tarot card 💜 I cannot express my gratitude to the many people who worked on this game's development over the years. The Dragon Age franchise has always been a huge inspiration to me and I'm so happy to say that Veilguard carried that torch beautifully. I can't wait to play this game 10 more times ✨

this is my Hollow Knight deathknight, Melee Apocalyptic Dusk Caste wanderer. they are called the Flame-Eating Moth, and they wander the Underworld and Labyrinth alone except for their little glow worm friend in the bottle and the wickedly sharp soulsteel sword Thorn, granted by great dead titans on the edge of nothing.
I really love how efficient and to-the-point this character design is. Rags! Lantern! Crazy purple sword! Every element is purposeful.

Here's three character options!

This is how you lose followers people. Bringing politics (not the fun kind) into a hobby does nothing but divide the player base and stir up trouble (Although in MTG the fun kind of politics does that too),

Gatekeeper? I’ve not attempted to push anyone away from the game, and I enjoy playing with all the planeswalkers at my LGS. The lady planeswalkers at my LGS are respected and treated just like everyone else, and after living in several cities and going to several stores, I think its fair to say that a majority of players are more than happy to welcome women to enjoy our hobby with us.
There is no reason to assert that MtG ‘needs’ the intervention of a radical political movement because of jerks on the internet. I personally find it distasteful to bring politics into nonpolitical spaces like gamestores where people are trying to enjoy themselves. I’m not asking anyone to stop playing or leave the community, and I’m happy to invite new people to play. I’m saying that I don’t believe it’s appropriate to talk politics while others are attempting to have a good time.
But not all of us get to have a good time…just because you personally don’t see it doesn’t mean is not there…..it’s an issue that NEEDS to be addressed.
If your attempt to address your issue makes the game less fun for me, I have the same right to voice my opinion. That’s all I’ve done, voiced an opinion.
That means I’m allowed to voice my opinion that you’re being illogical to think there’s no place for critically thinking about how recreation both reflects and shapes social cultures and is therefore worth scrutiny
Allow me to be frank. I just want to play a card game. I just want to play with my friends and my LGS and have a good time. I don’t think it is too much to ask that you keep politics to a political setting and allow people to enjoy their free time in peace. No one at my LGS cares about each others personal political beliefs because we all just want to play a card game.
Oh for fuck’s sake.
There is no such thing as a “political setting”. Every setting has potential to be political, and the LGS is certainly no exception. If you expect the environment to be apolitical, I expect you to be speaking out against every time someone tries to hit on a woman just trying to play Magic. I expect you to call out anyone making sexist, racist, homophobic, or transphobic jokes. I expect you to stop anyone trying to use words like “gay” as an insult, or “I got totally raped by __ that game”. I expect you to stop all of these actions and more because the people who performed them are the ones who are bringing the politics into the store in the first place.
If none of these things are happening in your store, great! That doesn’t mean they aren’t happening elsewhere. Hell, you might be missing them entirely because they don’t register to you as “politics”.
Or, ORRRRRR, if someone is offended they could talk to the specific person who offended them and resolve it personally instead of preaching to the entire community about being ‘inclusive’.
That would be fine and dandy if this were a case of a few individuals, but it isn’t. This is about an underlying and pervasive misogyny that runs through all of nerd culture that needs to be addressed. This is about opening up a space dominated by straight white dudes into a gaming community that all races, genders, and sexualities can be comfortable taking part in.
To someone who was made uncomfortable, hearing someone speak up publicly might be what convinces them to come back at all. If you wait and speak to someone in private, the person who was hurt by those words may never know that anyone in that store had their back. Because, in all practical senses, no one did.
This dude is why we need dudes in the community who are willing to step up and support their marginalized compatriots.
