“ well yes, how good of you to notice. ” she flashes her a toothy grin. she admits, she has double standards — the behaviour carmen exhibits usually would annoy her. but carmen just happens to fit into her idea of cool a little too well. it’s impossible to get upset with her.

“ no, but that’s irrelevant. ” maybe if she says the words with confidence they sound more convincing. “ stockholm’s architecture is mostly from the 19th century, everything is beautiful. ” the more she talks about the city the more she misses the little details of it. “ i think they’ve already decorated biblioteksgatan… ” christmas is her favourite holiday, there is no question about it. “ but that’s so subjective. every city is the perfect city if you’ve lived there long enough and your family’s there. how long have you been away anyways ? ”  

“you’re a brat,” carmen claims, as if she’s not an even bigger one. she’s also supposed to be the grown one - with the age gap between them carmen probably should be acting the adult. she never does, though - something she’s glad doesn’t bother her boss. otherwise her ass would’ve been tossed a long time ago. she’s starting to see the allure of getting fired, though, if only to take her ass home. 

“who cares about old white people buildings?” carmen replies with a roll of her eyes. “there’s plenty of old architecture in tokyo - some of the temples are from like.... the 16th cenury.” admittedly a lot of the buildings are fairly modern because of the great kanto ‘quake and the second world war, but carmen doesn’t feel like giving a history lesson. there are other ways she can bore astrid to death. 

“that some christmas junk?” she asks, shrugging at the question. “like eight months? it’s kinda startin’ to suck. i’m kinda gettin’ sick of hanging around all you rich kids.”

carmen drums her pen against the notebook in front of her, brow furrowed a little as she stares into space, teeth worrying the inside of her cheek. her gaze focuses when someone speaks, brow furrowing as her gaze falls on some unknown kid. 

“me? ugly?” she snorts. “cool your jets, kid. i wasn’t looking at you. but uh, go off, i guess.”

she sucks in air in a loud and dramatic manner, her head whipping to look at the chef. “ fo— FOURTEEN ? ” she repeats, her brows one centimeter higher than usual. “ i’m going to ignore that and tell you that i’ve been able to purchase mild alcoholic beverages for over a year now. the legal drinking age doesn’t exists in sweden. so i’ve been sipping on champagne for quite some time now. ” the line was pretty smudged in royal circles anyways, there was always some alcohol involved at parties. “ but stockholm’s so beautiful during summer. the sea glitters, the ships are cute and colorful, birds chirp, and people smile. tokyo and its poor air has nothing against stockholm. ” she pauses for a moment. “ why new orleans though ? ”

carmen’s mouth opens, curling up in what can only be described as a rougeish grin. ah, there it was. the same tone her brother got when she picked on him for being the younger twin. astrid’s may have been more than a little put on but that didn’t bother her - she liked a good laugh. 

“well aren’t you all grown up?” carmen mocks, cocking a brow at astrid. her brow lifts higher as astrid bags on the city she’d previously been living in, head tilting a little to one side. 

“have you ever been to tokyo? stockholm ain’t shit in comparison, my guy.” 

“my dad lives there - it’s where my mom was born, too. a home away from home, or whatever.”

“ when i’m FREE, like really free. i’m going to enjoy the best — the best — champagne there is, sitting on a pier in stockholm. i hope this nightmare ends in summer so i can actually enjoy the moment without losing my fingers. ” 

“aren’t you a little young to be talkin’ about drinking champagne?” carmen queries, squinting an eye at astrid. “you’re what, like fourteen?” she’s not a big believer in drinking ages - she’s really only saying it ‘cause she can, and to get a rise out of astrid. she was, in short, a fucking shithead. she was sure astrid was used to it by now, though.

“pass on stockholm, honestly. i’m taking my ass back to tokyo asap. maybe with a layover in new orleans.”

Her small walk through the island had been nice- it was really just a quick look on the paths closest to the building itself as she’d arrived late and the sun had set during her time outside. She could only imagine how all the gardens would look with sunlight. But she would have time to explore the whole thing to it’s smallest details. This was her home for now - a thought which brought a sense of sadness to the pit of her stomach. It was for the best. Spain didn’t need a dead princess- and on the bright side, they could have sent her to her husband. As walked into the building once more she turned to someone walking nearby “Excuse me- could you point me the main desk? Or a map preaphs.”

carmen lounges back against the sandstone brick, ashing aside her cigarette. she’d taken to loitering outside at night - sometimes she just needed some air, and more often than not the courtyards were teeming with people in the daylight hours. it was nice to have some space to herself, a moment of silence. 

she huffs, tossing her cigarette to the ground, grinding it out under her heel before she shoves her hands into her pockets, making to saunter off. she halts, though, when someone speaks - she hadn’t noticed their approach. she turns, eyes falling on an unfamiliar woman. 

“a main desk?” she repeats. “this isn’t a doctor’s office, sis. where do you need to go?” 

she’s probably not the best welcome party - a scruffy chef with a shaved head and an attitude isn’t anyone’s first choice.

“oh, true,” the agree, nodding. their expression sours more as they think. “i suppose today is a day for making you proud,” they begin, “for i just hoped there was a hell so he would know the pain he has caused.”

carmen cocks a brow. “hey, c’mon. don’t look so disgusted,” she protests, before shrugging. “either way he’s not breathing my air or touching on any more young women so i think justice has been served.”

“i’m twenty-six - i’ve been an adult for a while,” carmen protests. “so i wouldn’t say i’m ready for adulthood. more like... navigating it. i think i’m doin’ an all right job - hopefully i won’t start pruning too early.”

Sometimes an intervention unlike the medical kind is necessary.” Like an intervention that causes a national food crisis.

carmen’s brows lift a touch, and she bites her tongue a moment so as to keep herself from speaking too hastily. the last thing she needs is to get herself in some hot water - she really did feel like some of these royals would chop heads off if they could. 

“maybe so. i guess that’s why i’m not the prince, huh?” carmen’s tone is dry - obviously she’s not buying it. that whole attitude rubbed her the wrong way - the ‘i’m taking action’ one. more often than not she’s seen it used by royals as an excuse for their warmongering behaviour. 

“maybe his wife’ll turn on him - y’know, switch off his life support when he gets sick. or push him down some stairs.”

they thought of all the suitors who had been considered for hae kyung before kikuhito. all far too old to be appropriate, except hae kyung had her own money, and didn’t need that of a husband’s. “do you think it bothered him?” they wonder aloud. “that people so obviously just wanted him for his money?”

“no, no. thank you,” carmen replies with a cock of one brow and a lopsided grin. she liked to encourage bad behaviour where she could - even though kyung won wasn’t all that bad behaved, still. she liked to think she was leading someone astray. 

“probably. i hope it did - he still weaponized it, anyway. if you can use something as leverage to get young women into bed with you, you probably weren’t that torn up about it in the first place.”

“Honestly, you’re right in all of that. It’s so gross, that anyone is allowed to act like that and then they get to be… famous and revered by a whole lot of people. Just more proof that no matter what you think, sexism is alive and well.” 

She frowns again. 

“good plan. maybe hit the bottle a little first,” carmen suggests. “there’s some darksided shit that went on with him.”

carmen hums in agreement, nodding. “men are raised to hate women - that’s not gonna change over night. at least we live longer.”

“As always.” Diana added with a small laugh and then just shrugged. She didn’t really like when staff members treated her differently and that was the reason why she usually started to snoop around and ask really personal questions to push the buttons. “I can’t stand those posh snacks. It usually tastes like shit. There is always something weird. Like who even likes fish roe?” The princess pretended to throw up and then continued quickly. “But sushi is fine.” 

“No need to be so careful with your words, darling.” She commented lazily. It was hard to offend her, usually she was more curious to know what people thought about her and other royals. “So you’re here only for the money? Getting cash and then bolting away? Where are you from by the way? Are you related to anyone I know? Or is this success story about young inspirational chef?” 

“fish roe isn’t the worst thing in the world. it has potential, if it’s served right,” carmen replies with a shrug of her narrow shoulders. after a moment she scrabbles in the pocket of her jacket, finding a half-crumpled pack of cigarettes. “i can’t eat it straight, though. which is generally the high society thing to do, so i get it. you mind?”

she cocks a questioning brow, holding up her pack of smokes. she at least liked to ask - not everyone shared the same dirty habit. she wasn’t even that frequent a smoker, which was generally why her pack always looked so busted. by the time she got to the bottom of it, it’d been floating around for a good long while. 

her nose wrinkles at the pet name. “axe the darling,” she says - if the princess said not to mince words, carmen would not. “pretty much. i like the cash and clarissa’s a doll. plus it looks good on my cv. personal chef to the queen of france is hardly somethin’ to scoff at.” 

“i’m from japan,” she replies. “my folks are from the states, but i was born in osaka. lived there my whole life.” she often feels the need to explain that - otherwise she gets some dumb fuck questions about how exactly someone who looked like her could be from japan. “i doubt you know anyone i’m related to - i don’t come from wealthy stock. clarissa found me on the internet, offered me a job. y’know, a real millennial type success story.”

kyung won gave a small lurch forward. “i meeean, is it really that far astray if he was such an evil man? if in life someone was an awful person, you don’t exactly owe them any respect now that they’re dead.” they paused, thoughtfully. “you should simply avoid speaking ill of them in front of their grieving loved ones. if they have any. but, i don’t think i will count this man’s fans as loved ones.”

“no. i just don’t think i’ve ever heard you say anything so... negative,” carmen teases, fondness colouring her tone. “i’m really proud, honestly.”

she shrugs. “fuck his loved ones, honestly. i think they loved his money rather than him, anyway,” carmen continues. “why else would some babe in her twenties be interested in some gross old 90-something dude.”

People sometimes think you can rely solely on genetics and using a bit of cream every night but it takes a lot. It’s a whole process.“

“not really. i’m just honest,” carmen replies with a shrug. that much was true - she could be faultlessly honest at times, to the point of being painfully blunt. some people didn’t always appreciate it, despite what folk said about honesty being the best policy. 

“don’t worry - my pops is real big on skin care. i’ve never seen a man enjoy a face mask as much as him - or a woman, come to think of it. he’s been teachin’ me his ways from birth.”

“must be a pretty nice rock you’re camped out under,” carmen teases, before she shrugs her shoulders. “he’s not really worth knowing about, unless you wanna ruin your day.” 

“he was a certified demon. i thought i hated him already, but all the gross shit that’s been comin’ out since his death has made him even more unlikeable. imagine being that awful, huh? i mean, i ain’t shit but at least i’m not some grotty old perv who called quaaludes ‘thigh openers’.”

“it really is,” carmen agrees with a nod, her mouth curling up when kyung won speaks. she reaches out, clapping the kid on the shoulder, grin curling her mouth. “shit, i really am leading you astray, huh?”
