My brain did that thing again where it gave me a super weird and interesting concept via dream. This time it gave me a spooky one.
It was a simple structure that was called the Jackrabbit Staircase. It’s simple in concept. A flight of ascending stairs at the corner of the room. You couldn’t quite see what was at the top, but there was a passage behind the stairwell that led to a dark corner of the room.
When you walked into the dark corner and came out the other side, everything in the room changed. The wallpaper. Perhaps some decorations on the walls, the lighting fixtures, maybe some of the furniture, even the clothes you were wearing. You were still definitely in the same room, it was just different in a new and fascinating new way.
Most people when finding the Jackrabbit Staircase would find themselves walking around and around and around the staircase, finding all of the new exciting ways the room could transform, and all of the fascinating permutations of the world around us. People were always so excited to see what new version of the room was in store for them as they go around and around and around.
Now, the question is what’s up the staircase? It’s safety. The staircase itself leads to the world we know. If you ever get hungry or thirsty or too exhausted to continue looking at the surreal combinations presented to you, you could climb the staircase and rest.
And yet no one ever did.
