@fraggle-rockstar
I am in my masters program creating my dissertation proposal for my upcoming doctorate degree. I realized I wasn’t entirely sure if my wording was okay, or if they were still up to date.
I remember during my undergrad, I had an American Indian class taught by an American Indian. I specifically asked him how he’d like to be referred to, and he said American Indian.
Fast forward to one of my classes in my Masters, my white teacher who was teaching an American Indian class told me they find American Indian offensive. I took in the fact that every person feels differently, but I still continued to use the term I had always known. I would absolutely listen to an American Indian before I listened to a white person on their own wishes.
In my studies currently I am seeing a lot of “natives” term being used. I wasn’t sure how this would be felt, but I found myself using “non-natives” a lot. I’ve also seen indigenous, Native American (which the original professor during undergrad said he found offensive). Of course I understand that one American Indian’s preference is not everyone’s preference, but I haven’t been able to get any else’s input for preferences. I also understand one tribe may prefer one thing, and another tribe another thing, but again I haven’t been able to get the opinion of them to make sure I’m using the preferred term for each person.
I want to be as sensitive as I can, and refer to people exactly how they wish. I didn’t know who to ask or turn to as my area is a primarily white area. I then realized I have Tumblr and I’m sure I could reach the American Indian community some how.
Can anyone help me? Also, if anything in this post itself is offensive, please tell me. I don’t want to be naive, ignorant, etc. I want to know others wishes and I will absolutely follow it. I just want to learn and I appreciate you all <3
(I am also placing in the tags every term in case some people do prefer the other terms, and that’s how they’d find it)
I much prefer “Native” or “Indigenous” We’re not Indians, we’re not from India. As far as “American” goes, it’s a complicated term because yknow, obviously the US is a foreign occupation on our land, but I usually use “Amerikan” to denote a pan-national identity that transcends colonial borders and the fact that this is a foreign name for our lands (since Turtle Island only refers to North America, I don’t use that in reference to indigenous people throughout the supercontinent). You’ll also hear the term “NDN”, but that’s an internal thing, it wouldn’t really be appropriate for non-natives to use.
See those are the thoughts I had grown up knowing so that’s why I got confused. So that’s what I had always thought was the preference, so when my proffesor told me AI that’s when I got confused! I really apppreciate that insight and knowledge!
Oh no worries! I think I got it confused when they did mention that word, but got it now it’s used in community i just had never heard of that before so I appreciate knowing that now ! I appreciate you telling me that!
If you’ve noticed from me I get confused a lot LOL
Is Amerikan internal or should I use that when speaking to people?
It should be fine, although people might confused about it at first.

wishing everybody a penis friday
this disgusting fucking site hasn’t changed much. aight see you guys in another like five months or whatever.
If Indigenous people die out like the white man wanted, Mother Earth would crumble at your feet.
only white people get offended.
What’s funny is y’all keep saying nonviolence is the way, yet all recent events have proven your wrong. Any. Means. Necessary.
You claim to be Christian yet support violent riots? Didn't Christ say to turn the other cheek?
We’ve turned our cheeks many many times. Christ came with a sword and he turned over tables. We must do everything we can to build a better world for our children and to worship God in mind, body, and soul.
"lmao a post i made a while back about how nonviolence is bullshit is making its rounds on ant-sjw tumblr" Oh, you mean the one where they shut your idiot mouth and you were unable to respond?
dude nothing on this website is that serious
Since Christ Himself has said, “this is My body” who shall dare to doubt that it is His Body?”

Hello!
My friend Evelyn (lol, kin doubles--oh no!) is in a continuous financial crisis.
She's a 28yo Oglala Lakota two spirit living in Minnesota, & she needs your help whether it's through reblogs or donations!
She has reached out through Facebook and Twitter with only minimal success, and since I've had better luck with my own financial struggles in the past on here, I'm signal boosting support on Tumblr!
Her financial struggles have been pretty consistent since September, and while she's been trying to keep on top of bills, she's behind on rent (which is normally $600, but she paid off about $80 of that after PayPal fees for my landlord and the remainder is looking at being paid around the 12th. She just wants help with at least half of it so she could keep her landlord off her ass), and she's looking at quite a few bills that vary, from a $300 late student loan payment, to a $150 bill for a transition related treatment, to a $30 credit card payment that bounced.
It's basically a bad time, and when she tries to bounce back from those old bills, it's just in time for the new bills to come swinging through. She's had to sacrifice her antidepressants and anxiety meds as well because that was money that could have gone towards bills, and she's had quite a few moments these past few months where she went at least a week without hormones due to not having the funds.
According to the State of Minnesota, she make too much for any assistance, despite them ignoring student loan payments, overdraft fees from her bank, old bills that had defaulted (one of which has since gone to a collection agency), and just trying to get enough food to survive.
So, anything donated to her will be helpful and appreciated.
As thanks, she is offering up a copy of the zine she's recently started as thanks if you include your address.
Her PayPal is (PayPal.me/ejvocu). Please ignore her deadname (& make sure to select "send money to friend" if you're in the US)!
Thank you from the both of us!!!! ♥️
