One insidious influence of capitalism is its tendency to convince us that value is linked to exclusivity, that a thing isn’t special unless someone is keeping you from it.
How magnificent is a dandelion? A bit of moss on a broken sidewalk?
How inadequate is commerce as an instrument to measure the wonders of our world.
We have fire departments that send firetrucks carrying well-trained experts to deal with the flames. Through fire hydrants, their important work is baked into our municipal infrastructure. All unquestionably good and logical things.
Yet, I ask you to compare the impact of mental health crises, in cost and lives, to the impact of fire. Almost 50,000 died by suicide in the US in 2023. Where are our visible, celebrated, well-funded mental health stations? Where are the crews of well-trained specialists who can deploy in a moment’s notice?
Why do we dedicate ourselves to fighting some fires while letting others burn us to ash?
