Plaubel Makina 670
This one is going to be a special one: I have had this camera for a while and I wanted to wait and use it for a longer time before writing a review about it. In the last months, I have taken less and less pictures in 35mm format and switched to medium-format photography due to the increase in resolution and detail that comes with a larger film size. Nevertheless, I still wanted a camera that is easy to carry around. The solution? A medium-format folding camera that shoots in a 6x7 aspect ratio - the Plaubel Makina 670. Instead of a solid lens, it has a foldable lens element that expands for focusing.

When going to a workshop in Milan earlier this year, I got the chance to test the camera out a bit for the first time. I took some rolls of Ilford HP5, Kodak Porta, and Fuji Pro 400H and shot some frames in all kinds of different scenarios - indoors, outdoors in the snow, overcast, in direct sunlight, shadows, etc. - to find out how the lens would perform. Find some selected images below.
From that point on, I have been continuously using it for the past 6 months and the more I use it, the more I like it. I just love the ergonomics - very simplistic - and it has everything that I am looking for in a camera. You can feel the quality when you pick it up. It's just built to perform!
Cons
Limited to one lens (80mm f2.8)
Servicing might be a bit expensive, but can still be done at Plaubel GmbH in Frankfurt, Germany
High price (it might be worth looking into the older generation called Plaubel Makina 67)
Pros
Compact design due to the folding mechanism
6x7 medium format cameras don't really come any smaller then this
High quality optics, beautiful bokeh rendering with aperture wide open at f2.8
Great for traveling
Very well-built
Bottom Line
This camera will most certainly be a keeper. Never did I take pictures with a 6x7 aspect ratio before, and it definitely changed how I take pictures in a positive way. It combines the compactness of rangefinder cameras with the unbeatable image quality of a medium-format camera. Right now it is my main camera - and it's a very sexy camera indeed.
