Gotta do what you love.
Insights from the top street, documentary, and fine art photographers.
"Fstoppers: What advice do you have for fledgling photographers? Kimberley French: Definitely do what you love. Shoot what you love to shoot. The money will come, follow your bliss. Also, focus on something in particular and become very good at it. I think it’s really important to pick something that you’re good at and you love, and take baby steps. It doesn’t all happen at once, and if you’re not doing what you love then you’ll die inside. Find people who are doing what you want to do and ask them questions, shadow them, be their assistant, soak up all they know. Have a website, a resume, a business card, and always present yourself professionally. Hire a designer so that your material looks professional and people can recognize your logo. Be clear about what you do. If you say that you do ten different things, people won’t take you seriously. Also expect to work hard. Nothing worth doing is easy to do or get into. FOCUS. Have fun and enjoy every moment, its a journey not a destination."

Opportunities are popping up so I have to work hard. Stay Focused. All the usual motivational things said.
Learning a lot and loving it. Working on my Lightroom 4 workflow right now. I get antsy when it comes to this sort of stuff but I have to keep in mind that it will not take me as long next time - this is the learning curve. Eventually it'll be fully integrated into my system and it will be a no brainer as opposed to feeling like a chore.Â
One day I'll be able to do a post or video on my Post Production processes for all of you.
These are a few of my favorite things!
I don't have the result photos of the v-flats ready yet but I have it down in my habitrpg account that I would blog today. So in the name of creating good, productive habits here's today's post. I realized that I could share a couple of my favorite websites:
Website #1:
habitrpg.com - As I mentioned above, for those of you that are geeks, nerds, dweebs out there (like myself) who wish you could be getting more done. Turn life into a game! Take damage to your HP when you don't accomplish what you want to for the day. Reward yourself with 'in game' and 'rl' (real life) prizes. Don a helmet or sword to protect your from... yourself - yourself when you're lazy.Â
This site has really changed my life and I've been using it for maybe two weeks. Watch out, it's still super glitch but the creator is hard at work trying to get everything into great shape. He just completed and finished a kickstarter but is still accepting donations to keep the progress going.
Website #2:
creativelive.com - If I were ranking these as favorites then I'd have to list both this and habitrpg as number one as they've both changed my life - but I'm not ranking, just sharing. CREATIVELIVE CHANGED MY LIFE. It is the reason I quit my job. Are you a photographer (hope so if you're reading my blog), videographer, editor, designer, business person, entrepreneur, creative person, or human being in general? Yes? Then this site is for you. Here's the concept: Seminars on all subjects listed previous taped live and broadcasted on the interwebs daily - for F Â R Â E Â E. Small catch - after it's been broadcast if you want to watch it and missed it or you want to watch it again you have to pay for the files as if you're purchasing an instructional DVD. I wouldn't even really call that a catch as it really is an instructional DVD. But the biggest POSITIVE about the whole situation is that you have the opportunity to learn something you didn't know before for free. So go, watch, and let learning abound! Â
Final V-Flats and resulting pictures next... I promise!!
Here's photos of the process for the v-flats. I bought them from Expendables Recycler in Van Nuys. I asked them to cut about 4 inches off the top of each board since they're 8ft high and my apartment ceiling is 8ft as well. I decided to trim them to make them more even when I got them home. I kept the extra they trimmed off and used it as a buffer between the boards and my floor as I trimmed. I then taped off the edges, bottom as well, to help protect them from damage. Then came the process of taping the hinge. I should mention that I tried various methods of taping. Eventually the technique that worked best for me was to pull the tape to the length of the board and lay the board edge down on half of the tape with the tape sticky side facing upward. That way, one whole side edge is automatically applied. Then I just had to wrap the tape around the other side. Gaff tape is a bitch when it sticks to itself. I bought white gaff tape to tape the inner (white side) hinge. It did seem as though it would hold together without the white tape but I think it will last longer this way. Also, it would be possible to use the black gaff tape on the white side but more care would have to be taken when shooting (or more photoshop). Final product and resulting shots coming soon!
Got my foamcore, tape and bead board. Time to turn these suckers into V-flats. I'll post another picture of the process and another when they're finished!
Lightbulb! Or should I say… Flashbulb!

This is an example of a type of 'lifestyle' photo that I wish I was 'good enough' to take. Something interesting-ish. More importantly, something you would see in a fashion ad. I could see this image being used by Express or H&M if they were doing a line with high attitude. Crop it, add some text and it's a catalog cover or an email blast. I get those email blasts with images like these constantly. I look at them an sigh and say to myself - some day.Â
I took this photo over 4 years ago.
And so it begins
It seems I started this blog in a moment of clairvoyance.Â
