One of my favorite aspects of shooting books is the Time spent with the author. And in the case that the author will be featured, there is much more time and opportunity to get to shoot them. For Sweet Alchemy w/ Chef Yigit Pura we shot in studio, in his kitchen, in SF and Paris, a place he drew much inspiration which allowed me the same
Rare is the opportunity to mix food in humor, but working with @humphryslocombe has always provided fun on the set with their slightly depraved wit. Seasoned front of the house statesman @seanvahey partnered with Jake @fetalkitten Godby, a most talented and somewhat reclusive sweet food master to form an #icecream company that was on the forefront of the artisan ice cream craze with delicious and unexpected flavors combined with British-American satire. These are my two fav portraits- Jake in his madman’s ‘lab’ and Sean charming the masses- They celebrate their #10yearanniversary this week. #lickthat
9th annual holiday portrait this morning. Every year I've photographed these kids since their mom was carrying them. And for as many years, #papa & computer genius 🖥💻👨🏼💻@justplainroach tinkers in my office with my part Apple part PC desktop he built to satisfy my frustration with both.
I first met Megan Rey, the owner of @miette, when she was just selling cakes on Saturdays at the farmers market. I was so drawn to the beauty of her creations that I immediately went up and offered to shoot for trade. 10 years later, she has three delicious store and we have produced one very popular book-printed in multiple languages (with @lesliej ) Sharing both a birth date and daughters named Scout, we are like minded and are plotting a few new books. First we are hoping to clone ourselves in order to make more time to do so...📷📝🍰
After moving from NY & switching from fashion to food photography- I began by expediting the kitchen at Rubicon @tracidesjardins first restaurant in SF to learn as much as I could about California Cuisine. Although I’ve leaned oodles from many chefs throughout my career Traci was the closest that I had to a real mentor. She taught me how to think about food and wine pairing,appreciate great product, and most importantly how to plate a dish - requisite, indispensable to great food images. Incredibly generous by nature, Traci agreed to food style my first cookbook On Rice by Rick Rodgers / @chroniclebooks - Now, close to 90 books later, I still look back on the serendipity of meeting her and how that positively influenced my career.
I met Elizabeth Falkner @cheffalkner years back when she was the pastry chef @tracidesjardins ‘s restaurant Rubicon, I was expediting the kitchen. I introduced myself with powdered sugar around my lips, and told her that ‘any rumors that I was snagging her famous Mexican Wedding cookies was completely false. ‘ We haven’t stopped laughing (and sometimes crying) since. Along this road, Elizabeth has shown the world that she can rock savory just as amazingly as she does sweet, once by winning the coveted World Pizza Championships in Naples. Another wonderful artist I’ve been fortunate to shoot all the years and call a #bff Did I mention she has a #wienerdog?
Another favorite portrait @kate.arding - we met many many years ago while I was covering the newly opened @cowgirlcreamery . Kate was curating the soon to be famous US artisan cheese list, and she still remembers to this day being slightly offended by my speaking back to her in a replica British accent. By happy chance, I’ve not only learned so much about cheese from this brilliant cheesemonger over the years, but I gained and incredibly special and lovely friend that I have been delighted to photograph over the years
In addition to being thankful yesterday, and always for many things in my life, I am so grateful I chose a career where I have been fortunate to be able to meet, get to know and capture so many incredibly talented people. I always hope to capture the essence of who they really are and I love the challenge. When I was in my early 20s, I met Albert Hadley by chance, interior design Icon-Designer of the Kennedy white house. We bonded over both being from the south, living in the East Coast. He graciously Asked if I would shoot his home And the day that I did, he stood by my side, walked me around, and taught me how to see through my camera the way he sees a space. It was very serendipitous to meet him- And would solidify the way I looked through the lens forever.
