Edgar has been sure his ice cream promise would appeaseFrank, but the glare he’s still receiving is suspicious at best and hostile atworst; neither of which Edgar is familiar or comfort with receiving from Frank.Edgar stands dumbfounded for a moment, because if Frank isn’t upset about theice-cream then what in the world is he possible this upset over?
Edgar is just about to ask him, when Frank manages to beathim to a question. What did he want with her? The accusation in Frank’s tonehas Edgar physically drawing back as he leans away from Frank’s ire as if he’sstarting to physically feel it. The way Frank had asked it sounded like Edgarhad some type of ulterior motives for wanting to visit Alice, it sounded almostlike Frank thought—Oh Merlin! All ofthe pieces suddenly fall together in Edgar’s mind. Frank’s jealousy isn’t something that Edgar has encountered often in life, but now that he’s identified the emotion it seems impossible to call itanything but that.
Edgar balks at the implication of why Frank assumes he wouldneed to be jealous. “Merlin, Frank—Whatdo I want with her?” He repeats Franks earlier line, shaking his head atthe absurdity. “You honestly believe I’d pursueAlice? She’s—” He closes his mouth suddenly. He was about to call her a child, butcuts himself off. If this display of emotion is the current representation ofhow Frank is apparently handling his feelings for the girl, then he certainlydoesn’t need Edgar through the issue of the age gap into the mix. And honestly, despite Edgar’s inability to recognize most of the Order Members as adults, that is technically what Alice is. She’s a Hogwarts graduate, an auror intraining, and a capable young witch—hardworking and mature for her age. Edgarhas never taken time to think about Frank and Alice as anything but colleagues andallies, but as he muses on it he sees how the might do well for each other assomething more. “She’s hardly someoneI’d be compatible with. She’s a Fortescue after all, it would make much moresense for her to end up with someone who actually likes ice-cream.” Edgar jokeslightly, hoping to finally ease the tension now that he’s figured out thegenuine source of Frank’s aggravation.
Frank started to feel rather stupid when Edgar made it clear he wasn’t interested in Alice. Despite the feeling he had that Edgar had wanted to say something else, he didn’t care in this moment; he felt like a weight was lifted off his chest... because it meant she’d be focused at work. And that his work life wouldn’t become tangled with his personal life ( if she’d started to date someone he thought of as a brother that would have been complicated ). And that he didn’t need to feel jealous, even though he didn’t actually have feelings for her.
“Oh,” he replied, unable to really say anything else –––– what could he say? Now that everything was cleared up, Frank felt ridiculous. Of course Edgar wasn’t into her; now that he thought about it, she didn’t really seem to be his type after all. “Yeah, with someone who really likes ice cream,” he echoed; all that was going through his head at that moment was that he liked ice cream. Not that he’d be suitable for her, of course, being her mentor, but it was a thought that wouldn’t stop whirling around. Galloping gargoyles, he needed to stop this.
“So, er, why were you in there?” He was genuinely curious now that their... misunderstanding had been corrected, and he also thought it was a good way to change the subject. Whether Edgar would let the subject drop, though, Frank had no idea. The other man had never taken Frank’s bullshit before, so he wasn’t sure if he’d be cut any slack this time.
