Unmarked fashion
Deborah Tannen once wrote that "the men's styles were unmarked" (talking about a group of men at a conference). She described what the women were wearing, how they were "marked", each set of clothing seemed to indicate a different personality for each of the women: on was reserved, introverted, another was rather professional and plain, and the third was wild and showy. If being "marked" by what they wear is something that happens to women, it most certainly happens to men. Every piece of clothing a man wears says something about his personality, and even the casual observer can pick up something about the person who wears them. Everything from a mans shoes to how ruffled his shirt is says something about him, but what that is exactly is up to the observer. Sweat pants could indicate a slob, or perhaps someone who has recently worked out. A neatly pressed shirt could mean anything from a controlling mother to a prospective prom date.
There are no unmarked people.
