My heart does go out to the families of the kids in critical condition from Evergreen High School who will be forgotten in all of this chaos.

NBC News: Outbreaks of rabies rising across the U.S., CDC surveillance suggests
The CDC's rabies team says it's tracking 15 different likely outbreaks from New York to Oregon.
"As rabies seems to be spreading more in wildlife, veterinarians are especially worried about vaccine hesitancy spreading among pet owners, a dangerous trend that could lead to more dogs — and their owners — becoming infected. A 2023 study published in the journal Vaccine found in a nationally representative sample of Americans that nearly 40% believed canine vaccines were unsafe and 37% believed that vaccines could lead their dogs to develop cognitive issues, such as autism."
jesus christ are people stupid about vaccines. you think your dog can get autism??? so you'd rather risk it dying from rabies?????
At first, I was like, 10 rabies positive animals in 1 state? Really? They're freaking out about this? Then they got to the human cases. Yikes, 6 rabies deaths in the USA in the last year after years of none. That is a substantial increase.
Living in Texas, I'm always aware of the existence/risk of rabies. We get hundreds of positive animals a year in our state and make up a solid 1/4 of the entire country's annual total on our own. It hadn't occurred to me that other states seeing so little of it also meant they expect and watch for it far less, meaning they may not catch it in time to treat.
Keep your pets vaccinated and know the rabies carriers in your area. (The CDC website has a fun color-coded map.) There are different strains, though the entire continental USA has bat rabies. Texas also has skunk rabies and a patch of mongoose rabies down near Austin. Any mammal can spread the virus, but carriers can spread the virus while being asymptomatic for years before they finally get sick and die from it.
If you or your pet are bitten by a wild mammal, regardless of how that animal was acting, talk to your respective vet/doctors. The cost of the vaccine is a lot less than euthanasia for your pet or a hospital stay and funeral for you.
This includes non-wild mammals that are outside by the way. Feral cats, stray cats, indoor/outdoor cats, stray dogs, lost dogs - if there's ANY possibility that the mammal you don't know the vaccination status of, the one that just bit, you was exposed to rabies, don't fuck around. Don't dismiss it. Don't figure it'll be fine. If there's any chance an antivaxxer is about to wreck your life because their unvaccinated cat or dog got into it with a rabies positive animal at some point, go get help. Don't wait.
