Understanding Ian Gallagher
When I first started my character/portraying Ian I had some knowledge about bipolar disorder as I am in a Clinical Mental Health Counseling masters program. However, I just finished up my diagnosis and I feel as though I understand him on such another level entirely. Although as a Gallavich fan I am not fond of the way they “ended” them but I understand Ian’s reasoning behind everything much more. My class had the opportunity of working in an integrated care simulation with nursing students who administer a MSE and we got to portray a diagnosis and I chose Bipolar I in a manic episode. You really have to understand the symptoms and understand the disorder to have proper empathy for someone who has to live this.
Look at the way Ian is looking at Mickey tho 😍
like for a starter from mickey.

Someone want to do an AU where Ian is not bipolar and being in the army is still his dream but his struggles with Mickey and Mickey’s marriage are still very much a problem?

Working at the Italian restaurant on Broadmore wasn’t his first choice but something he found himself good at and the tips weren’t bad. Juggling his slow but sure college career while working to help his family and earn his keep was another. He didn’t need more to juggle especially a mouthy pint sized man with a thick accent who wouldn’t leave him alone. Ian Clayton Gallagher, a young boy of 20 did what he could to impress the customers and earn quality tips but he knew what this place was all about, what went beyond the doors of the kitchen. He didn’t care, he was here just to do his job and ask no questions. It wasn’t easy to not be curious however, especially when the loud mouth pint-sized man went back there and returned always requesting him as his waiter. Like today.
Ian tried to get Alice to take his table but she was full and the redhead simply sighed, rubbing his eyes before making his way over towards Mickey’s table. They were practically the same age but he still addressed the slightly older short man politely. “What can I start you off with to drink, sir?”
Mickey showed up a little early for his dinner meeting. Sometimes when he came to this restaurant he really didn’t have anything planned, other than seeing his favorite redhead, that is. Tall, pale and handsome, the waiter never failed to make the sharp dressed thug smile. Ian, as it said on his name tag, definitely tried to be professional while being Mickey’s waiter, but Mickey wasn’t an idiot and noticed all the times those hazel eyes held themselves back from rolling. It was a lot more entertaining to watch someone get irritated. The thug looked up at Ian when he came up to the table. It was just Mickey by himself at a table in the corner as he waited on his two other members of his party. Shockingly white teeth peeked out from behind his lips in a smug grin, ready to start chipping away at Ian’s collected facade. “Hey, Firecrotch. How ya doin’ tonight?” He asked smoothly, ignoring Ian’s question.

The worst part of his job was not being able to tell customers off. Having to abide by whatever their mood was and still force a smile upon his face. Ian had more of a drive to keep his job having to work to help support his family. He couldn’t land a job just anywhere not with this economy and he still wanted to make it out of the Southside somehow. Maybe not necessarily to the North but just somewhere, anywhere else. If he owned this place he would have given Mickey Milkovich a piece of his mind - show the shorter cockier one that his taunts really weren’t going to get him anywhere. He was a cute handsome man but his mouth was another thing entirely.
“My name is Ian.” The redhead tried to reply in his calmest most sincere tone his jaw however clenching and his eyes filled with fire. “I’m doing well just doing my job, sir.” Even if Mickey was a year older than him it felt strange to call him that. He placed the wine list in front of the brunette once more. “Would you like to start off with something to drink? Will others be joining you?” He looked away waiting for the other to speak. This was ridiculous.
