Coraline burst into a fit of giggles at his attempt, whining loudly in protest at him, “Nooo, that was freakin’ awesome. That’s some Academy Award winnin’ voice actin’ right there.” she insisted, “Plus, it was like, totally hot.” mimicked Cora.

He tried to control his laughter, but it was nearly impossible. “Oh, well, if you think it’s hot,” he teased, “then I’ll keep working on it.” He smiled and winked. Things had seemingly been... better. Much better. Not perfect, sure, but he was enjoying the happiness while it lasted. “So, if I take you on some rides does this count as our second date?”

“Ah, right. Make sure little Oliver and Siobhan end up making out while you’re at it, yeah?” she cringed as she held her tongue to prevent herself from using the slang ‘snogging’. Pretending to be American was much more taxing than it seemed from afar.

He chuckled. “Will do.” With admiration for her dedication, he did his best attempt at a cheesy 1980′s American accent: “I mean, like, it’ll be totally rad.” It was bad. It was really bad. He could help but burst into laughter. “Fuck, well, guess I don’t need Doc Brown to know that acting isn’t in my future.”

“Then I’ll be there fer sure,” she grinned before noticing the slip in her accent. Coraline nearly gave into the affection before she remembered the persona she was meant to have and scrunched her nose up instead. “You reckon? That’s a definite yes. Next time call me before they get any chances to hurt your pretty face.”

Fred couldn’t resist a laugh. She was much more dedicated to staying in character than he was, but he could respect that. “Will do. But first I have to make sure my parents get together so that I’ll be born. You know, classic time travel stuff.”

She chuckled and welcomed the embrace, leaning on him and slinging an arm over his shoulder. Her eyebrows knitted together in mock thought for a moment. “Depends. How much crime ‘s there to fight in the 80s? You know I can’t live without kicking ass,” said Coraline jokingly, “Just kidding. Of course I’ll be there. Though my ass kicking question still stands.”

He chuckled, knowing full well that she was, in fact, not just kidding. She was a Wood after all. Kicking ass is what she was bred to do. “The 80′s were a lawless time,” he teased, snuggling his head against her hair. If there was ever an acceptable place for PDA, Fred figured it was a Rory Smith carnival.  “Could’ve used someone like you, I reckon.”

Coraline had been alternating between her friend groups the entire night; from her Quidditch team to her Powerpuff trio, and she was already beginning to grow exhausted. She was reconsidering her decision to extend practice the night before just as she spotted an iconic red vest in her peripheral. A grin split over her face as she turned to face Freddie, “Hey there. Welcome back to the future.” she returned the cheesy line, her voice hoarser and void of her Scottish accent to emulate her character, “Professor Utonium can have ya back there by midnight if ya buy me a pumpkin pasty.”

“Thank you,” he said with a large grin. He wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her close. After all, she looked so cute, how could he possibly resist? “Hmm, seems like a pretty good deal to me. Only if you come to visit sometime, though. Travelling through time and space would be a little lame without you.”

Fred exited the costume station, fairly proud of himself for his idea. Sure, a lot of students (especially those without any knowledge of muggle culture) wouldn’t get the reference, but he liked it anyway. And he hoped that Cora would recognize him as the leading character in one of his all-time favorite muggle movies. After, all he was fairly certain he had forced her into watching it with him on more than one occasion. He smiled as he spotted her sporting a little green and black dress. “What’s up, Buttercup?” He couldn’t resist but ask. He popped the collars of the plaid and denim shirts he wore under a puffy red vest. “Apparently Rory’s costume stations can’t exactly make me a DeLorean, but I’ll figure out another way to get back to 1985.”

“Yeah, yeah. You’re a real funny nut, Fred,” Albus said. “But jokes aren’t going to get you out of this one.” The both of them knew making Fred owe them a favor would be one of the greatest things they could possibly achieve. There was no way they’d let Fred cute talk his way around them. “Oh, that’s actually quite simple. You owe us each a favor, and we bust you out of kitchen duty. You refuse, well…it’s no skin off our bones, right, Teddy?” He slung his arm around Teddy’s neck. “We leave and go find something fun to do.” He pause. “Without you.”

“Right,” Ted spoke up in agreement, tapping his chin with a small hint of a grin forming on his face. “Come to think of it I might just have something in mind as we speak.” And in fact this wasn’t a lie at all, an idea having just then popped into his head. “I’d decide quickly if I was you Freddie, otherwise we really should be on our way, time is of the essence,” he continued, knowing that the added pressure would surely put him in a tough situation to say no.

“Well, who’s to say I can’t just break myself out?” He asked, raising an eyebrow. It wasn’t something he hadn’t already thought of, although it seemed difficult to raise enough of a distraction to sneak out unnoticed all on his own. Their offer was damn tempting, but he knew it could come back to bit him in the arse. Hard. “Like what?” He asked Teddy, sceptical that he even truly had an idea and wasn’t just pulling Fred’s leg.

 As much as it stung that she would only be friends with him, she was happy at his agreement to go back to the way things were before. “You’re one of mine too.” She replied. “And these past couple of weeks have been hell without you.” Even though she had her other friends, she felt they didn’t really understand her the way Fred did. “Any ideas of what we can do?” She asked, her smile growing.

“I’m sorry,” he said to her saying that her weeks had been Hell-like. That hadn’t been what he wanted. It seemed him trying not to hurt anyone had been having the opposite effect. His face lit up at her smile. “No, not yet. But I’m sure we can think of something to get back at that wanker.”

“I know you didn’t mean to hurt me.” Mul didn’t think he’d gone on the date, or even told her about it, to hurt her. He might’ve had arsehole moments, but they were usually shown when pranking people, not actually hurting them. “I shouldn’t have avoided you, I just…I felt that if I hung around you, I’d try to get you all to myself, and I didn’t want you to be hurt or angry with me.” The last thing she wanted to do was hurt him. Or make him angry with her. “Can we try to go back to the way things were before? No avoiding each other, and maybe this time, instead of making second years sick into quicksand, we can do something to Peeves?” A small smile appeared on her lips at the thought of making Peeves pay.

He had a lot of questions about everything she was suddenly divulging to him, but decided now wasn’t the time to answer them. If he really needed to know, he could ask her later. He only hoped that she didn’t still feel that way: that she would ‘try to get him all to herself’. As much as he never wanted to hurt Mul, he also never wanted to hurt Cora. “I would like that. You’re one of my best mates. I never want that to not be the case.” At her mischievous words, an evil smile found itself of Fred’s face as well. “Sounds cheeky, Mul, but I do quite like the sound of that.”

“‘M sorry, me boy, but ya know how it is. The curse of bein’ a Wood.” she said with a long-drawn out sigh. Coraline laughed shortly after, something she missed doing with Freddie. He was one of the only people sure to give her genuinely ace banter. “I could just petrify yer mouth shut durin’ practice. ‘M very good at castin’ that spell.”

“That is true,” he said with a chuckle. “Although it’s a little different when it hits someone else,” he teased. “But, I’ll wait around in the dormitories until then. Mentally prepare myself for another practice will all you women, whom I have a feeling will be extra catty today.” Fred shook his head playfully. “It’s not easy for Guy and me, you know.”

“I miss you.” Although it wasn’t what she’d expected to be the first thing out of her mouth, Mul was glad it was. “We haven’t talked since you told me you had a date. And I hate that we’ve been avoiding each other.” Although she wasn’t sure if he’d been avoiding her, she’d definitely been avoiding him, because she was scared if she saw him, she’d be tempted to get Coraline out of the picture somehow. “And also…I like you. A lot.” Mul took a breath. “At first I just thought that I was attracted to you, especially because you’re really hot when you prank people, but it’s more than that. When I kissed you, I felt something, and when you pushed me away, it hurt.” Her voice became soft. “Seeing you with her and not with me hurts too.”

He listened carefully. It was a lot to take in, and he was afraid to interject. Not that he would know what to say even if he had wanted to. He sighed, looking over her inquisitively. After their snogging in the courtyard, he had suspected she fancied him, but he hadn’t really let himself fully believe it was true. There were a few moments of awkward silence as he tried to think of what to say.

“I miss you too,” he said finally, treading carefully with his words. He couldn’t lie to her, but he didn’t want to divulge the whole truth either. “I felt like a proper twat treating you the way I did. And I don’t want us avoiding each other either. But... Bloody hell, I don’t know, Mul. I’m sorry it hurt you that I started seeing Cora. I never meant to hurt you, but I didn’t know that’s how you felt.”

“Shh. I may just be butterin’ ya up a bit,” she teased. Truthfully, she had too many ‘first mates’ to be able to count, but she never took that fact for granted. If she only had one first mate, after all, she most likely wouldn’t have gotten as close to Freddie as she was. Coraline couldn’t help a blush, “Nothin’ is a good excuse to cancel practice.”

“Ahh, there’s the truth,” he said with a laugh. He was oddly... happy. Maybe relieved was the better word. But, regardless, in that moment, all Fred felt were positive emotions. This had to be the weirdest day of his life. “Well, it was worth a shot.” He said with a shrug. “I’ll see you there, then. Unless, like me, you’re off to hide in the common room for the rest of the day. In which case it would be my gentlemanly duty to escort you.”

“It’s probably not but I feel like we should.” Since they hadn’t spoken since Fred had told her about his date with Coraline, Mulci felt that it was time they talked. Even if it wasn’t about her feelings for him. She missed talking to him.

He nodded, hesitantly. “Something on your mind?” He raised an eyebrow, wondering if she had something important to say if she felt now was the time to say it. He forced himself to smile, mentally willing himself to relax.

“Better to try than not try at all,” she said, matter-of-fact. Coraline’s eyes rolled in their sockets as he took her face - not in a condescending or rude way, as a grin played on her lips and she reached forward to mimic him and squish his cheeks together. “Aye aye, but do remember, ya are me first mate, ‘n that’s just as important as the captain herself.” She would never stop worrying about Freddie, but she would do her best to begin trusting him more.

He smiled, well, as best as he could considering his face was being squished together. “First mate, huh?” He asked. "I reckon you would’ve chosen Lily for that. I’m not sure I deserve the honor, but thank you.” Still grinning, he leaned forward and placed a kiss on top of her head of brown hair. “Veritaserum isn’t an excuse to cancel practice is it?” He teased. “Not that I would miss you screaming what you really think at everyone for the world.”
