Really like the considered development of the visuals as the track intensifies. Very subtle but very effective. Would like my own AV piece to bare similarities with the understated and classy nature of this AV.
Really enjoy the music and photos in this piece. Trevor Mathison’s talk at LCC inspired me to put sound to image using underground style music. The music is of extra interest to me as it is a collaboration which informs my improvisation project as well as my AV installation / film.
Some inspiration from nearly a century ago. The aesthetic of this piece is provocative. I discovered this film in my research regarding early abstract film. He claimed that he was the first abstract film maker but this was not true. He was preceded by the Italian Futurists Bruno Corra and Arnaldo Ginna between 1911 and 1912
Looking into other producers explorations of the study of synchresis. In this animation each square coincides with sound coming from a corresponding place in the stereo field. While my film will not do this as such the uses of stereo field are interesting and do inform my own work respectively.
Example of the style of visuals that I will be using in my film / AV installation regarding space exploration and the manned mission to Mars
Brilliant documentary about human efforts to get mars which has given me some great ideas for my film on exploration and its importance.
Interesting insight into the mind of Miles Davis. His words i believe inspire us to focus on our craft to great levels. His music has influenced my piano playing significantly and is a figure of great importance to my improv project.
Very interesting documentary about NASA’s proposed manned mission to Mars. This is vital research to defining the intention of my film that I’m making that will aim to demonstrate the importance of exploration and inspire people to explore their own surroundings. Their may still be hints towards the problem of addiction to smart phones and social media, however the theme has shifted to exploration and the mission to mars and beyond for the moment. The bicycle footage may still be used however it does not seem to relate directly (especially aesthetically) to my new affected footage that symbolises orbits in space. I will post an example of the new footage very soon.

The Voicemail Project concept has drastically changed due to a break down in collaborations with my former subject. The new concept is in development but is likely to concern areas such as addiction to smartphones, tablets, laptops and social media as well as television. How we receive so much information from screens which influence our opinions greatly and collect data on us which further reinforces these beliefs and closes our minds. I’m hoping to make a film that inspires people to break free of their devices and encourages them to explore, learn, create, and live life to the full. This clip does not demonstrate this idea explicitly but the full length video compiled from many different shoots of a different nature. The sound will be reflective of the video and will contain more relevant material in order to reinforce the idea of the media as a whole.
Excerpt of Lumière II Version 2.1, performed at the Hearn Generating Station, Toronto on June 19 2015 as part of the Unsound / Luminato Festival. Lumière…
Went to see Robert Hanke’s Lumière III last night at the Barbican Centre. The powerful lakers were used to display audio reactive patterns with a focus on geometrics shapes. The sound design was a little under polished but the overall effect of the show was very strong and actually had me a touch overwhelmed at points. There were moments of great tension which would die away after a few minutes to change into a more relaxed AV performance. These moments of relief were more favourable to my ears and eyes but would not have the same impact had they not succeeded the loud, booming minimalistic music and the flashing, hyper stimulating lasers.
Here is a short video that is an example of some of the content I will be using to make my short film.
STORY BOARD / PRACTICAL RESEARCH REGARDING CYCLING RECORDING
This is a brief version of the kind of shots I will be taking on a go pro I have borrowed. These scenes will be accompanied by Jazz piano and soundscape pieces. The method of how I have attached the go pro and the zoom can be seen as well. (I had to use cable ties to pull the break lines out of the way of the camera shot, as well as investing in a wind shield for my zoom)
In this clip from www.artistshousemusic.org - Legendary producer and arranger Teo Macero discusses working on the album, Bitches Brew, with Miles Davis, and ...
Very interesting video about the creation of bitches brew which is very closely aligned to the methods i’m using to create for my Voicemail Project Film Soundtrack.
This is a piece of improvised piano music I played during a recording session. In this session I was playing piano over a few of Milo’s tracks while he was mixing. The piano featured in the piece above was ad lib without any backing track which meant I could play more freely with time and dynamics. Milo has taken this recording and has given the piece a richer overall sound by using his tape machine, reverb and the application of some fitting samples. He has made use of effects to entrancingly blend a piano improvisation with feedback loops manipulating the playback speed on a tape machine. Milo says that he hears references to old jazz players, such as coltrane, in my phrases. I was not deliberately referencing any music in this piece however, their could well be close similarities to things I’ve heard before and have played unconsciously, as well as my music taste very much developing around jazz and related genres.
This is a clip of a piano improvisation that I played over Milo O’halliren’s production. The idea is to record improvisations over the top of pre-produced music and then edit them independently of each other to see how similar or different the direction taken is. This method is inspired by the album Bitches Brew by Miles Davis produced by Teo Macero
This is a test atmosphere I recorded around my local area which is a fairly similar space to the one I will be taking the soundscape for my final Voicemail Project from. This will have voicemails layered over the top, possibly with some sidechaining to ensure the voicemails are fully audible (this is an experiment I will be conducting over the coming weeks).
