Captain Marvel: It wasn’t “meh”
Ok so I completely forgot that today was #InternationalWomensDay but I guess today was pretty significant because #CaptainMarvel opens today and I just got back from the cinemas after watching what I thought was going to be a “meh” movie based on the reviews. So basically, I walked into it expecting a mediocre movie and got the opposite. Was it a perfect movie? Not entirely but considering what movie comes after it, it’s not surprise that all my Caucasian Marvel fanboys had such a field day with the smear campaign leading up to this movie’s release
So to put it into context, my YouTube feed was bombarded with videos of mostly men saying the movie was “disgraceful to past MCU movies” and that had me concerned. The movie’s marketing team really went above and beyond which was expected for Marvel’s first female lead film. So to have people just regard the movie as “meh” really had me concerned but I thought to myself “Dude, just watch it yourself!” So during my Post-Production lecture at school today, I booked a ticket to see Captain Marvel at the nearest IMAX cinema (because I have the money, fuck you if you hate me). I walked in thinking to myself that it might suck but BOY WAS I WRONG!!! The movie was really great. Not perfect but with what was shown, the hype was well worth it.
The Stan Lee tribute was really beautiful❤️ That was such a perfect way of honouring one of Marvel’s forefathers and it was really precious seeing him in his little cameo. That made my heart warm. Anyway, let’s get to the whole movie. The opening was a bit confusing at first but I managed to get where this movie wanted to go. Considering how badass Brie Larson was as this stoic yet snarky Kree “peacekeeper” (you’ll know why the inverted commas are there when you watch the movie) at the beginning and then finally see her slowly develop her character and let her emotions just start showing gradually was really well done. I will admit, there were a few points where she was a bit of a drag but those were mere milliseconds and was easy to get over when you realize that the other characters she interacts with sort of adapt to that and therefore help her come out of her shell. Her relationship with Nick Fury was the best thing ever! Seeing them bounce off each other was really REALLY cute. The moment she meets (or reunites) with her long time friend, the heart of the movie starts to slowly come out and that helped her come out of her shell a bit more so the character development, albeit minute, was really great.
The twist at the middle of the movie where we find out why the Kree and Skrulls are at war really surprised me and we end up sympathizing with the villain of the movie (who actually isn’t the movie’s actual villain but if you’re an MCU fan, the Kree being there kinda gave THAT away 🤣)
One of many rewarding aspects within the movie came from the 90’s nostalgia. Granted, I was born in 1997, my family made sure that certain elements of the 90’s were made known to me as I grew up so I kinda felt like a 90’s kid watching the movie. Many of the songs played, I grew up listening to and some aspects like the CD-ROM and Dail-up jokes in the movie really hit me in my feels because I could relate so much 😂🤣
Now let’s talk about Goose, the cat. That is a cat and a half. He was one of the coolest elements in the movie. The twist as to who Goose really is shocked me at first but I got over it fast because, well it’s the MCU, anything is possible and then started laughing from there. Also you’ll know why Nick Fury says “The last time I trusted someone, I lost an eye”... That’s all I’m gonna say about that.
All in all, it was a better movie than I thought it would be. I started wondering why so many reviewers were hating on this movie when in actuality, it was actually really enjoyable. The mid-credits scene got me hyped up for Avengers: Endgame (spoiler alert but they played a scene from the movie... Deal with it) and I’m really excited to see where they take this character in the future.
