i still can’t shake this whole “style borrowing” thing. why don’t i see it as a problem? i won’t speak for everyone that’d be totally off base but i’ll speak for myself.

the world’s packed with a ton of stuff that shapes us somehow: how we see things, what we feel. and it’s those feelings i think matter most in creativity not “i like it/i hate it,” but what kind of emotion a creative impulse stirs up.

for some reason, music hits me first. i listen to it nonstop. i’ve got these old jbls that are either hanging around my neck or on my ears, and there’s always something playing. sometimes i’m on the bus, and a random track comes on that can straight-up make me tear up. or take movies. there’s this one film that blew my mind just with its opening sequence the holy mountain by alejandro jodorowsky, 1973. i remember getting legit spooked and turning it off.

i’m not super into visual art, don’t really get modern art and performance stuff sometimes it feels like it’s all made up to be “something.” but the stuff that actually gets to me, that sparks emotion… not just the bad stuff. you get what i mean, right? i don’t even need to spell it out you already know.

but the question still hangs there: how much of everything in any creative field is borrowed? how much was already done before us, and how much do we just wanna try doing ourselves? again, i’m just talking for me.

with the sims, i’ve got a pinterest board full of inspo, themed playlists that are basically character mood vibes, a telegram channel where i’ve kept the whole story from day one over 2.5 years, and a brain that remembers every tiny detail. plus, i follow some tumblr blogs that seriously fuel the urge to create, to try new and wild stuff.

yeah, someone comes up with something and others copy it; someone borrows; someone does a cover but adds their own twist. but sooner or later, you land on your own vibe - the one that’s totally you and can’t be confused with anyone else’s.

to me, this whole thing is totally normal because, like, everything’s already been done. kurt cobain painted with spit and blood, but someone did that before him, and someone after. and that’s fine. some people imitate; some people make their own thing and that’s fine too. i also think trying to copy someone to figure out how they do it, to break it down piece by piece, is just learning. and learning always leads to knowledge.

honestly, photoshop hasn’t closed on my computer in over 15 years, but i still learn something new every time. and i absolutely love that in our community at least in the circles i hang out in there’s this vibe of helping each other out without dragging anyone. i see people putting in the work, getting inspired, giving things a shot. i’ve seen so many posts about how much they hate working in photoshop, but...

guys, look at yourselves, look at your hands, your brains, the stuff you’ve made. you’re freaking amazing you did it all yourself! you’re the best!

and it doesn’t matter how hard it was or what it took when it’s about creativity, none of that matters.

the coolest part is, even the most genius folks do it - they borrow stuff. not because they can’t come up with something new, but because something hit them so hard, sparked such a vibe, that they’re dying to pay homage to it.

i’m absolutely obsessed with easter eggs and references in art. even if it’s a nod to someone else’s work - i’m here for it.

and yeah, i do this all the time. you can totally check for yourself - just take a peek at that board, and it’ll all click into place.

So I was scrolling and saw this image in an article about the European heat wave,

And was like, uh, are you missing something there, buddy? Like all that red in northern Africa? Because that's a lot of red.

And I was going to give them the benefit of doubt, since I don't know much about the climate in Northern Africa, aside from Morroco and Egypt, which seem like really hot places, so you know, maybe it's normal there?

But nope, that's not the case:

NEW SIXAM PRESERVATION GARDENS

This has been upkept for over 200 years, one important remnant of the Indigenous population of New Sixam who seemingly vanished around that many years ago. This plot up on the hill got plenty of sunshine, and so it is the perfect place to grow plants. It is an interesting collection of cultures, and, since the Sixamians settled since First Contact fifty years ago, has included a greenhouse specifically for Sixamian flora and fruits.

In the modern day, it is funded and the upkeep performed by Meredith Roswell, in stark contrast to her husband Ted who seems keen on bringing the town into the modern era - Meredith wants to keep its rich and varied history intact. The local Sixamians help her water and care for the plants. If you visit, maybe you can try one of the fruits and vegetables. Not just Earth's either - why not try a sharp, sour Glow Orb, or a watery sweet Quill Fruit? Or, if you're feeling brave, you can feed Old Betsy, the cowplant!

Safe to say these plants are a lot nicer than the other ones in New Sixam...
