everyone always wants to gush about how well vox and alastor know/understand each other, which sure, I get it, but honestly when it comes down to it the two of them being the ultimate misunderstanding duo is like, the entire appeal of radiostatic to me. and I don't mean misunderstanding as in something they could solve if they just learned how to honestly communicate (already a very high bar to clear), or even really misunderstanding as in a 'no one both understands and fails to understand me like you' type of deal, though they both kind of think that's what's going on. the thing is vox and alastor are superficially very similar and underneath that do have a few really key commonalities with each other (which I love), but their core motivations and worldviews are almost diametrically opposed. these two guys saw each other in hell for the first time, immediately recognized the self in the form of the other (maybe for the first time ever), and have been making their refusal to update that initial impression everyone's problem ever since. vox keeps relentlessly throwing himself against the solid wall of alastor's psyche trying to break through because he can't accept or even consider the possibility that alastor simply doesn't operate according to the same ruleset vox lives by. meanwhile alastor can play vox's insecurities like the most finely carved ivories but he consistently fails to recognize their real significance and wouldn't remotely know where to begin actually fixing the thing he so easily broke. just by existing as themselves vox and alastor manage to challenge each other. so much of their scrapping comes down to trying to directly or indirectly push the other into being more like themselves, more compatible, more in line with their personal understanding of the world.
they can define and dissect and methodically design their own little mental models of each other down to the last observable detail, but they will never ever truly get each other until they learn to sincerely empathize with someone who is fundamentally very different from them, even if it requires adjusting their own basic perspective on life to make room. and you can probably see why these particular characters might struggle with that!
