For Chris Shoemaker (and those that loved him)
To Aaron and Joseph Shoemaker,
You’re father was a brave, kind man and a guiding light in my life. I will always think of Chris and his spirit as one year senior to myself, and at least a light year (or two) older than I am now. We all loved him so much, he was truly unique.
Chris and I first met each other at the Leelanau School off the Manitou Islands in the winter of ‘95 near the village of Glen Arbor, Michigan. Together, we found a kinship and friends and adulthood learning about life under boundless stars and seemingly limitless sunsets. While the land and forests set the stage, it was the players and things we’d going on to accomplish later in life that makes clear how valuable that time was for chosen few that had the privilege of learning from bards such as Wheeler, Nargis, and Duncan. “Leelanau” is a spirit we sang, drank and shared together in a small town for a short time. That time to us, like his holy spirit, is infinite.
To Chris,
Thanks so much Chris for sharing your timeless spirit, your music, your visit to Wisconsin in your hot rod with a guitar on your back. I’ll never forget the sun on my face in those rides along Leelanau lake shore, the late night sessions with your suitemates Tadlock and Bonco, the time you set your hair on fire, your white hot white heavy metal shredding, that time you returned “Round Midnight’ to me in my parents driveway. The man you became, the father, the farmer, the friend... thanks for everything. Thank you Chris. Thanks for sharing the secrets of infinity with me, may infinity now share its secrets with you.
